Its hard to say what is the best because that means something different to everyone.

I would make a list of what I consider to be excellent 9mm's.

1. Glock family 17,19,26,34
2. Sig 226, 228, 225, 239 210
3. Beretta 92 family
4. HK P7 and USP
5. Browning HP
6. Walther P99
7. Smith M&P
8. Springfield XD
9. 1911's in 9mm of course

"Best" is so subjective. Personally, I have been the most impressed by the design of the Taurus 92 - copy of the Beretta, but you have a first shot choice of hammer-down DA or cocked-and-locked SA. The safety is like a 1911, not like a Beretta. Build quality isn't up there with Beretta, and I traded mine off before anything could break.

I LOVE my Beretta 92FS Police model. It's accurate, totally dependable and built like a tank. The DA and SA trigger pulls are just a bit behind a Sig. But, it's big, so here we get into subjectivity.

My Glock 19 is a fantastic gun to shoot. Totally dependable, adequate accuracy. Of course, being a Glock, it's not the sexiest gun around, and I question the safety of the "safe action" trigger if you give one to a neophyte.

I'm sure a well-made 1911 in 9mm would be great, as would a Sig (I own a Kimber and two Sigs, but none are in 9mm so I can't comment).

Now here's your chance to beat me up: I owned an HK P7M13 a number of years ago. I DISLIKED it intensely. I know there's a mystique surrounding the P7, but I just can't see it. Subjective recoil is like a .45, even though you're only shooting a 9mm. The squeeze cocker is great in concept, but it makes a loud click when you un-cock it (talk about advertising your presence). The trigger pull, technically a SA, was not so hot - a Sig or a 1911 beats it in every way. Commence firing.

Never shot one but I have heard that the Walther P88 is awesome out of the box- hi capacity too

I also have heard the Sig 210 is the creme de la creme of the 9mm world.

But best  the Glock 19 I carry that goes bang when I need it to will always be "the" best. ;)

Interesting to see all posts not stating the SIG P210.

Actually, there are very few pistols in the top league. SIG P210, X5, X6, Smith & Wesson PC, maybe a few top-of-the-line custom 1911s (and very few of them actually are), the o-ring HKs (Expert & Elite).

What else?

BHPs, Glocks, CZs etc are not even in the same ballpark. To compare them with for example a P210 is like saying that a Volkswagen Beetle is as good as a Mercedes SL63 AMG.

Homeland Security just ordered 65,000 Sigs with he DAK trigger, P226,P229,P239

Where did you hear that and who is supposed to be getting them? As far as I know all DHS components are currently receiving HK P2000s as quickly as they can be produced. ICE and CBP are getting P2000s for sure so I cannot think of who would be left to account for that number. In fact, HK won the competition outright, but SIG sued claiming that labeling SIG a failure would be libel and DHS settled. However, my understanding was that they were going to be declared "co-winner" but would not actually provide any pistols. There is one small component that I know to be continuing with their Sigs. Maybe they are also buying some for the Coast Guard. I just cannot think of anyone else who could be account for that amount of pistols.

Oh, no, Richard2003-
It's a triple crown winner: ugliest, uncomfortablest, and unfunnest.
But it's still a superior piece of tool-machinery, and that still hurts to type out.
Now, please, I'm tucking my Colt GM under my pillow and calling it a night.

and how much???

Are you getting a 9mm pistol for ccw ? recommended you go to your local range and rent some of your favorite 9mm pistols and try it out at the range. choose the gun that you shoot best , feel most comfortable with and the price is within your budget. :)

A year ago I probably would have said Glock 19.

But I'm starting to think that the HK P2000 has surpassed it in almost every way. If mine continue to perform like they have for the past several months, I think they just might deserve a spot at the top of the "greatest" list. Glock aims for perfection, but HK actually achieved it with the P2000.

either of these :D
