The Best 9mm pistol....

Glock 19 all around great gun for HD, competition or CCW. Nice range gun too!

Glock 43 for warm weather CCW.

Don't forget that there are revolvers chambered in 9mm too - if you like revolvers. Lower capacity if using for CCW, but with moon clips, reloading speed wouldn't be bad.

I don't own a nine yet, the options are dazzling. Just based on the mound of research it's more about what fits your hand and demands. Are you going for hi cap or concealability? So far I have it narrowed down to a high power, cz 75, m9/92 beretta, shield, glock 19 any of them are winners. So then it's down to shooting them and going for the best feel. I have shot glocks. I used to own a 22. Rented a 19. None of this really helps unless your going to tally the suggestions like a survey.

There aren't many losers in the last few generations of guns introduced. When I bought my first 9mm 25 years ago (m43 Firestar, still have it) one had to spend a lot to get a really fine gun - and even then it might still be a trigger job and a set of grips or sights away from perfection. Of the guns I seriously considered for my second 9mm (Glock 19, Canik TP9sf Elite, SW MP2.0, Springfield XD2.0, Sig P320, FN FNS, HK VP9 and my eventual choice, the Walther PPQ) there are no losers. Each gun has slight relative strengths and weaknesses, but even at their worst all are pretty darn good.

It really comes down to what you prefer, and more precisely, what fits your hand. I handled and dry-fired the above guns (and many others), but every time I returned to the PPQ it felt more a part of me, rather than a device being held. To date I have no reason to doubt its reliability, as it ate everything I've fed it, factory and handloaded. I've seen a video where one was choked out with sand in the ejection port, but if you as much as wash it off with a beer the gun is going to run.

Since the thread is still alive, my third answer - my best range gun pick is the CZ75. Very good DA trigger & very good SA. Pretty much anyone who has shot it likes the ergonomics of the grip, from small statuted women to big old beefy handed guys. Full size & metal construction reduces felt recoil. A fun shooter.

I'm going to confine my response to self defense guns at or under the $1,000.00 mark.

Striker fired:

Glock - They've been around for a long, long time. They're a proven platform that's reliable and accurate enough for most people's needs. They have an enormous aftermarket; if you can't find something for a Glock, it's because it doesn't exist. They're simple. The exact same manual of arms applies across the board regardless of size or caliber chosen. Downsides, their ergonomics are garbage (in my opinion). Triggers are pretty bad when compared to many of the newer striker fired options out there. The factory polymer field goal/dot sights are pretty bad. Did I mention that the ergonomics are bad
.

You certainly have some issues with the Glock and it seems that you are not alone. However, the "trigger" should not be in the list since for $20 there is a vast array of trigger choices to make it from a match trigger to a trigger that is so stiff it is virtually impossible to use (NY-2).

I was also surprised that you had no 1911 style in your list of best.

I'm looking at the Glock from a purely out of the box standpoint. And I do own a Glock 19 and have owned numerous Glocks previously. As I said, they're good enough guns for a lot of folks, they're just not for me between their ergonomics, standard trigger, and factory sights. I'd rather grab something from Sig, HK, Springfield, S&W, Ruger, etc. that works better for me out of the box and doesn't need parts replaced and grip reduced and recontoured to fit my biomechanics.

In regard to the 1911 in 9mm, I haven't found one at or under the $1,000.00 mark that really tickles my fancy. That said, if we were looking in the $1,500.00 or under price point, there are a good number including the Springifeld EMP, the Springfield Combat Operator, Dan Wesson Razorback, Dan Wesson PM9, and Dan Wesson ECO. To be 100% honest though, in my book, a 1911 should only ever be chambered in .45 ACP.

S&W 5906. I own several of them and every one is utterly reliable with no malfunctions in tens of thousands of rounds down range combined. A bit heavy for CC compared to the newer light weight wonder nines but I would gladly stake my life on any one of the 5906's if I could only have a 9MM pistol to defend myself with.

My experience with 9mm is limited, having only ever owned one. That said, there appear to be LOTS of good 9mm pistols, and there's at least one available from virtually every pistol manufacturer. Mine is a Glock 19. There may be better 9mm pistols for particular purposes, but I think I'd have a hard time finding a better all-around pistol.

Spats McGee

You know with the possible exception of an Astra Model 600 that I owned (the first 9mm. I bought and nothing really wrong with the gun besides the fact that it was brutal to shoot because of it's straight blowback design), I have to say over the years I have only had one less than satisfactory 9mm. pistol and that was a T Series Browning Hi-Power; of all things. Beautiful to look at it was nothing but sheer frustration to deal with an off-the-charts trigger pull, miniscule sights, and a nearly impossible to use thumb safety. Fixed that problem when they came out with the Mk.II Hi-Power. Everything else, ranging from a WWII P38 to a CZ P01, has been great with well designed ergonomics, decent overall fit and finish, and outstanding reliability and accuracy.

The best is the one that you have. The one that you had a lot of practice with. The one that you personally fired and find reliable.

I can honestly say that this ruger sr9c is the best 9mm that I own, or have ever owned*.

Relatively compact, reliable, extraordinarily accurate, and inexpensive.

*The only 9mm I have ever owned.
Can't say it is the "BEST" but can say, that I don't care to have any that maybe be better. For me, when they get as good as the SR9C, what is the point of trying to find something that is better. It would be like having a great hunting dog that you love dearly, and still want something else. I am also a LC9 fan, and a LCR. All great quality guns and gun that are just plain fun to shoot. My only Complaint with the SR9C, is the fact that it is just too easy to shoot. Almost like a 22.cal and accurate as heck. Hence, I really don't shoot it that much. I love shooting the LC9S. Mild shooter, slim design for carry ETC. Lately have become addicted to the LCR9mm. And while we are talking, went through 4 LCP's found the Pico and never looked back. In fact a month later, pruchased a second one. Man the Pico is a mild shooter and eats any ammo I have fed in. Over 500 rounds now without a hiccup.

20160917_114636.jpg this sr9c had belonged to my son. When he wanted to sell it to buy a 1911, I had to have it. It just shoots too good to let go.

"What's the best?" threads sorta give me a headache. What's the best gun, car, prettiest woman, truck, or about anything is going to get a ton of opinions and you know about opinions.

My 9mm's are all 1911 but what do I know? I'm an antique like they are. They are range guns but I certainly wouldn't shy away from using one in a defense situation. When out and about I carry a plastic fantastic in 40 cal. It's the only one of those plastic contraptions I own. It has a bunch of initials on the slide.
