Hi all,
I went out this last Sunday shooting with one of my brothers in law and one of my nephews for the first time in several years and we overall had a great time.
We arrived at an outdoor range several miles outside of town around 11 am. There were about a dozen or so people there, with about five or six lanes empty. I think that we were the only ones there shooting pistols. There was a really friendly man there with a lever action of some kind and a young man and I think his father that had a black powder rifle that looked really fancy. One man on the far left side of the range had a Blackwater t-shirt on and had a tricked out AR-15 type semi-auto and also a really nice scoped rifle (looked to me like a Walther, but I really don't know much about rifles). The couple to our immediate right (who I will talk about a bit later) were shooting a scoped .454 Casull and a really really nice single shot scoped rifle. I really didn't pay much attention to the rest of the shooters there.
The guns we brought were:
Ruger single six .22 revolver
Beretta model 85 Cheetah .380
IMI Baby Eagle .45 ACP
Taurus .38 revolver (not sure of the model)
Norinco SKS 7.62
Marlin model 25 bolt action .22LR
Ruger 10/22
Springfield 03-A3 .30-06 bolt action
Marlin .30-30 lever action
We set up right near the range officer's booth (which was in the center of the line) and grabbed guns and started shooting after setting up three targets -- one at ten yards, one at 25 and one at 50.
After a short while, a couple showed up and set up two lanes down on our right side, right in front of the RO's booth. Apparently they knew the RO and had a few other friends there that they were meeting up with. Unfortunately, this put them exactly where our hot brass was ejecting and they both got pelted. The man didn't seem to upset by it, but (I'm presuming) his wife was a little irked. I felt really terrible about it at first, and we moved down a few more lanes to help put some distance between our brass and their a** (as it were). Then I thought that they set up there when they could have chosen another lane or even asked us to swap with them. At any rate, it really ruined part of my day trying to avoid disturbing them until the RO called the all clear and we could go out and re-set our targets.
The Beretta and Baby Eagle were really nice to shoot, though I much prefer the 1911 type of .45's. I thought the Cheetah would make an excellent carry piece and plan to purchase one in the near future. I spent a lot of time with the Ruger single-six; it was just such a fun little piece to shoot.
I've never actually fired any of these specific weapons before and when I shot the SKS, it was a bit heavier than I first thought, though it was nice enough to shoot. I shot the .30-30 only three times, but it bruised my shoulder. Yes, I am a complete whimp.
The RO was a bit intolerant and nit-picky even though we were (in my opinion) conscientious in policing our brass. My BIL tolerated that in his normally good-natured way, but finally got angry at the fair number of snide comments made by the couple. He stomped around and made a few snide comments himself, but came around again and was fine by the time we left.
Anyway, here's a few pics of me with some of the guns.
