Im a college student. I also have a Concealed carry permit..... however my college, like many others, do not allow students to carry firearms on campus. Even if they are legally armed citizens.
So in accordance with campus policy, I have to adjust my EDC to comform to these rules.
Usually i carry my Gerber F.A.S.T. folder, which i really like. its a cheap knife, but really effectived, and yes... fast.
also i carry my NRA Surefire E2D...bright...small... gets the job done.
Of course, i also have my cell phone with me at all times, which is prehaps the most useful "weapon" in case of an "oh ****te" scenario...

So im curious to hear from others.... what do you carry to class?

I too am in situation where I have my CHL but school policies dont respect it. Now being that I am in Oregon we actually have premtion so I could legally CCW BUT I dont want to be the test case. (There is a case down in Medford that should define these things more)

So my EDC is as follows

1. Smith and Wesson Black OP Spring assisted knife
2. Cell phone
3. Situational awareness

I cannot carry anything as well. I just keep my wits about me. I was recently outed as a gun-guy at work (I am a student worker) and I had to talk to some of the administrators who were concerned about this.

I'm not A knife fight guy. I think A baton of some sort that will allow you to strike farther then you can jab, would have merit.
The unarmed dead, can't seek justice after the fact.
IMHO, the ability to carry concealed is acting like your unarmed.

Since I'm trusted to carry a CCW all over the state, but not on campus I have to abide by those laws :(

I carry a leatherman wave always.
I alternate between a 3.6" Kaber TDI in an IWB sheath and 26" baton.

I carry a pocketknife. It's really more of a utility tool than a weapon, but it could be used as one if I had too. I'll be picking up some OC spray and keeping it in my backpack. There's a cellphone pocket on the strap that would be perfect for a medium sized can.

If the rules allowed a fixed blade, the Ka-Bar tdi knives would be a good choice.

What state? If it's legal and only a college policy, make your decision on what the odds are of the college catching you, and what's more important to you, your life or the policy and its repercussions. As far as I'm concerned, I will carry anywhere and anytime it's legal for me to do so in my state, college policies and the like are not worth losing my life over to me. Sure, odds are small I will be in danger but I'm not a prophet so I'm not willing to take a chance. There have been some armed robberies around me lately which gives me even more reason to carry...

well heres the thought that bothers me...
well two lines of thought here.....

#1: after the VT incident, college students i know because ALOT more warry of the VT thing happening again... some of us gun guys took that as an initiative to start carrying if we werent already...

however recently I have sorta had a change of heart about it...
#2: suppose i DID carry to school.... what if i got made? the possible outcomes there are scarier and more LIKELY than some madman popping up..... what if someone called the cops/swat on me and i was gunned down by the good guys?

Only time I don't carry a gun is when the law says I can't.

The policies of private enterprises (businesses, colleges, work, etc) I don't feel any compunction to obey if I don't want to.

But the law ... well its the law.

what are the reprocusions of NOT following "rules" of campus' ect?
Expulsion? right?
wouldnt they also call the police? couldnt their be CRIMINAL charges brought against someone carrying a gun on a college campus

Depends on the state. What state are you in? The only way the question can be answered is by knowing what state you are in...

Be careful guys even those knives may get you expelled. At my old school it wasn't a big deal and I wore it with the clip on my pocket. But at my new one I drop it down in my pocket out of sight completely.

I also carry Fox pepper spray and a cell phone. I'm still up in the air on carrying a gun. It's a real personal question everyone must ask themselves. Risk of expulsion vs. risk of being shot.

Older Returning College Student
College has been locked down due to anonymous threat, before most students arrived on campus at 0730.

I cannot CCW on Campus, then again guns are just one tool anyways...

-20oz plastic container of Dr. Pepper
-Glass bottle of Tea/Juice/
- Cat 5e patch cords, laptop, scanner, flat top monitor, heck give me the whole darn PC off any desk, out of any room, I am not picky.
-Stapler, now put that stapler on my belt, I gots some reach.
-Potted Plants, pot, fake tree, whatever I can get a hold of and use.
-Chairs
-Construction scraps outside with some construction going on- Rebar, conduit, brick, 2x4...

Chair in open elevator means the elevator is stuck on MY floor. Cat 5e, belts, whatever, and watch , me,/us tie the stairwell door shut.

Maglight two AA, or AAA is a nice light, not expensive...
Bic Ink pens , number 2 pencils , ...proven.
I use a Zippo, have a two AA Maglight in backpack, Inova key ring light

My backpack is not light, and a pretty neat defensive tool...

I have SAK classic I use most on campus, along with a SAK Bantam or Case Yellow Handled Bare-Head Trapper.

Nobody sees me with a clip on knife...many think I should get a knife.
As I often use my Bic Pen, or that Small screwdriver with a Flat head, on one end, Phillips on the other. Just reverse and stick into handle...
sorta handy.
Carton Cutter some have seen me use...

Just pay attention have assessed and practiced plans and just be to class on time.

I usually carry my .45 to class, but since I have to maneuver and have class mates occasionly get into close proximity to me I keep it in my backpack.

Everytime one of these threads come up, I seem to go against the grain and I'm going to do it again. I would NOT carry a knife on a college campus. Yes there's utility to it if you use it for making bassoon reeds or for electrical engineering applications, but I generally don't see many students with a knife on their belt. In addition, very few people are trained in knife fighting so there exists a greater chance that they'll just leave the person slashed up. In this case, the media will report that you "slashed someone with a knife". A better option, when a firearm is not available, is pepper spray (for a deterrent- legal in all 50 states and on 99.998% of campuses) and a really good pen (stabbing implement). A fountain pain, can slash, stab, and cut, just like a knife. The difference is that the media and the university won't come down on you for protecting yourself with it, like they will when you pull a knife.

When I was in college, no real weapon of any kind was allowed including firearms, pepper spray/mace/CS or knives of any kind. The restrictions are state law here in Georgia, not just college policy.

I carried a little-league baseball bat in my truck. I never had to "use" it, but it was very effective in keeping the bums away when I went to the ATM machine. They just don't seem to ask for money from somebody carrying around a bat.

Nobody will ever tell you that you can't have a baseball bat on campus.

Since the title is "EDC" and not just self defense, i'll throw in a VITAL part of EDC:

a lighter.

Goes along with my leatherman knife, surefire E1E. +/- leatherman multitool.

Aside from a self defense situation, SHTF would require 3 things: light, blade, and fire.

Of course, the caveat here is that it depends which fountain pen. X-fine nib, so a sharp end rather than a rounded tip. Steel nib, not gold. Stiff nib, not flexible (which you aren't gona find in a modern production pen anyway). Best one afaik is the Lamy Safari. Cheap, available in fine and x-fine, stiff steel nib.

I still carry a knife though. But I concur that it's a bit easier for women to get away with subtlely bending some rules there. If I was a guy I'd probably stick with the fountain pen.

Well first and foremost, I try to stay situationally aware...

...but engineering has a way of making me a zombie during the day. :(

I'm also of the conviction that the best fight is one that you avoid. One thing I've learned from martial arts is that I REALLY don't want to go hand to hand. Oh, and also shouldn't be dependent on tools, etc, etc.

That being said...

I carry my benchmade 710d2 everyday. if I ever have to use this for self defense I must really be in trouble.

I also carry my surefire G2L everyday. Surefire would like me to think that shining a bad guy with one of their lights will immediately turn their eyes into flaming raisins and cause them to writhe on the ground in searing pain. I sure hope so.

I'm planning on picking up a can of fox labs this weekend.

start by getting active. if your like me, then your on facebook do a search for concealedcampus.com

they have a group and a website for non facebookers. they are trying to get active and get some good press and raise awareness for the concealed carry on campus cause (yay for alliteration!)
