Well Friends, a few months ago I posted this link and thread about a friend of mine who had to deploy a weapon while working to apprehend a criminal.

Today, he had to actually use his weapon in self defense, killing one of two attackers who robbed him. Check out the continuing story here.

This man and his family are some of the nicest and generous people I have ever met, and am sorry that this had to happen. I am glad his injuries were minor (He was out collecting from his parking lots after the incident, so he was not hurt too bad.).

I believe that this is the type of situation that Texas had in mind when we enacted our CHL program. He was not acting as a deputy when the incident occurred, but as a private businessman. (But the media has to add it's own spin on the story, just like the first story. Funny how the actual person involved in the event almost always has a different story from the one told by the media.)

For all us gun nuts, it was three shots from a .40 cal Smith and Wesson that sent the perp. to his just due.

I hope the officials in Houston treat this as a good shoot.

Police say they simply picked the wrong guy to rob.

Yeah, it sounds like the media has flipped this one in the guy's favor for sure!

Conwict, you are correct. I would be hard to make this shooting the fault of the shooter. By making sure that the his role as a reserve officer is prominently mentioned, they don't report to the public that this was an honest citizen, legally carrying and defending himself with a firearm. They want you to believe that this was a police officer doing his job. In fact he was not on duty! Obviously the liberal media can not let you see that you or I should be able to do the same thing.

God bless him. And thank God he was able to go home to his family afterwards.

I was actually thinking that it was decent reporting (judged against industry standards) that they made careful mention that he was an off-duty reserve LEO working his other job when the incident occurred.

I don't ever recall reading about a SD shooting in which they didn't detail the defender's employment. When the shooting heppened at the Blockbuster in Aurora (nearest such incident to me), the news made clear that he was part owner of a bar/brewery across town.

"Never rob from a guy collecting parking fees for a gun show"

That was the first thing standing out in the story to me also. Rob somone near a gun show? That ought to be a Darwin award catagory.

MachIVshooter, yes, I also believe that the reporting was better than average. But, the spin about the LE stuff is over done. He was not in uniform, the reserve position is unpaid, so he was acting as a businessman or common citizen. That is the point that I was trying to make. Channel 11 (the CBS affiliate) will always find a way to slant the truth to the liberal side if they can. I am also sure that if Quanlell X (sp.) makes a protest regarding the poor innocent minority that was ruthlessly gunned down on this peaceful Houston street by a trigger happy gunslinger, they will cover that also. And, probably with a bias that will not upset the protesters, or their followers.

I personally feel that this article, and reporting show how little faith we must place in the media when it comes to our second amendment rights.

If there are any more inaccurate description's that pop up, I will post them.

I should be talking to the family again today.

OK, another update. He was collecting funds for parking at a Houston ISD basketball playoff game at Toyota Center, not as the news reports said a gun show. (There is closer parking for the gun show) At least this news report got some of the details correct:

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=5822786

The officer is real sore today (he is in his 50's), but did not need hospitalization.

As reported on the ABC affiliate last night, the suspects mentioned to friends that during halftime of the basketball game they were going to rob the parking lot attendant.

Protests from the local black community are expected, and the family has been contacted regarding this by some of their local leaders.

I agree with Acera, and really I was trying to point out the power of the news report that comes out if you have a SD situation.

This guy (from all counts and by my estimation) was TOTALLY in the right. That's great, and the news report reflected it. I don't mean to say he didn't deserve the positive reporting.

But, I also think like Acera that his status as a cop helped him with the media.

I have heard horror stories like "Man shoots teen with Rifle, Now in Hospital." Turns out the man, who was about 70, was defending his wife with a .22 rifle after some vile threats from the "teen" and his friend.

The first story ran on the front page...the update once all the info was out was mid-paper.
