Hold on to your seat.

Ruger will be introducing a NRA-ILA Special Edition Mini- 14 that has all of the features necessary to make Mrs. Brady fill her adult diapers.

I was flipping through the 1st Freedom (the NRA's political journal... it has gun products as well, but not your typical gun rag) and I saw a Mini-14 with a 20 round magazine. "Couldn't be." I was wrong. The rifle SHIPS with the 20 round magazine (no more hunting for the ever elusive "Law Enforcement Only" dealer willing to sell his 20 rounders to us "simple civilians"), a 16 and 1/8" barrel (the shortest ever offered on a Mini-14), and an overmolded rubber Hogue stock with the NRA medalion in the bottom of the grip curve.

Seems like us "simple civilians" will be having ole' Bill's 20 round magazine after all :D

Nope. If you want that 20-rounder, you have to buy that rifle. No spares for sale but the 2 that come with it. And if you live in a state with a 10-round or 15-round limit on new magazines, you get a couple of 5-ers.

But when you said that Hell had frozen over, I thought that maybe Remington had introduced a new shotgun that isn't a way-overpriced good concept but built like day-old ****.

Looks nice! I wonder how many pieces will be made and when we will be able to purchase.

The price is something like $1000 isn't it?

You gotta REALLY want a "limited edition" Ruger to pay that much for a Mini-14.

I saw a current-configuration basic Mini-14 in stainless steel today at the gun show.
IIRC, the dealer wanted $640 for it.
That's a smart deal for Ruger.
If only they would dump those Ruger scope-scallops for a proper rail.
I guess you can get a rail that fits the scope-scallops, and then mount your optic on top of the rail... but geez.... you pay LESS for a rifle with a rail instead of sights if its an AR-type.

There are plenty of new Ruger full-capacity magazines available.
Price is a pisser though. http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MAG390-55303-1882.html

The "limited edition" thing is just another gimmicky thing that will appeal to about as many people as they are going to make in total numbers of that overpriced configuration.

IMO, they ought to re-design the mag well to take AR-type 5.56 mags, and for the 7.62x39 version, design it to take AK mags.

Then somebody would do a killing with it, and they would get a lot of heat.

Frankly, I think Ruger has painted themself into a corner with the Mini-14, and they don't have the guts or the financial incentive to walk through the paint to get out of it.

I'm sorry to say, there IS a market for a Fudd semi-auto.
The Ruger Mini-14 is exactly that.

In before the lock.

No argument on your points there, W.E.G. But really... I thought it was hell frozen over because the 20 rounders were offered WITH the rifle. Which is kinda big.

Who knows. All I know is that they won't be making that rifle in 10 years if the AR trend keeps up.

I think Ruger is headed in a new direction. They've offered up two CCW friendly handguns (SR9 and SLC380) and now this, good things may be happening.

I wonder if at some point they may offer the 20rd mags for sale.

Unfortunately, I think that Ruger is being driven less by ideology and more by money. They've begun to realize that if they don't get with the times, they will lose a significant share of the market. If they could get away with selling Mini-14/30 series rifles with 5 round magazines, they probably would. They realize, though, that the AR-15 is offered with 30 round magazines and up, and that for the same amount of money as Mini 14 is sold for, a shooter can get an entry- market AR that will embarrass the Mini at the range and can be modified to fit any need that the shooter might find. Ruger saw the writing on the wall with Remington being bought by Cerebrus (or however you spell it) and doesn't want to be next.

That's OK. People for years have said to "vote with your wallets." If that voting ends up working, and a company starts offering what people want, then everyone wins.

I think its a bit funny that even now its "only" 20rounds not even a 30 rounder.

There have been a few threads on this already. The mini was a fine gun 30 or more years ago. These days there are just too many better choices for less money, even if you could get past the crazy politics of Ruger.

I still like the Mini. It points a lot better than an AR. It carries a lot better than an AR. Yes, I have both, and I like the AR. But the Mini points a lot like a little shotgun or lever carbine, and the AR just plain doesn't. And unlike an AR or AK, the Mini doesn't stick out in all directions and get hung up when you are bushwhacking.

However, I think the only Mini version worth getting would be the one I already have: stainless/synthetic. And it ought to be 500 bucks.

This gun is BLUE! Not park'ed, blue. Why would I want an expensive, rust-prone Mini? And the 18.5" Mini balances and points well; I have no particular interest in lopping off a little barrel. The thing's loud enough as it is.

I couldn't care less about a bayonet lug or a bakelite grip (huh? you DO know what bakelite is, right?) But a standard rail on the top guard would be a good thing, and shouldn't cost extra.

$1035:scrutiny: I can get a cheap Bushy, 1000 of Wolf ammo and extra 30 round mags for that price. like the idea BUT shave $350- $400 off the price and I might consider it.

(huh? you DO know what bakelite is, right?)

Yes Sir! 110% of the time--my favorite plastic. The older folding k-mini's came with a brown pistol grip molded from bakelite. You see them go for sale (the stocks) for 200.00 and up. They look really nice on a k-mini.

(Is it REALLY bakelite or a similar more modern thermoset resin? I've never given one the hot water phenol off gas sniff test, but it sure has that certain 'look' to it.)

the $1k version is only because it is an NRA commermorative model. that is also the msrp, by the way.

in private conversation with the guys at the shot booth they told me that they were likely to sell another version, the regular one, for about 800 msrp.

the ruger mount base is actually very solid and well made. unfortunately it is also very non standard (although one can argue that they are big enought o make their own standard). that said i really would prefer put little weaver rails on top (two piece base).
