38 calibre Keltec automatic

Ohboy.

Not much to add to what's been said so far about the general idiocy of this entire encounter, or of the "Keltec automatic," except ...

1) Does Kel-Tec actually makes any .38 cal guns? OK, OK, the P3AT, but that's lousy nomenclature if that's what's meant. That's like giving the diameter of a .45ACP round in mm.

2) the "automatic" by itself would have (to my mind, and based on the principle of being liberal in what one accepts, scrupulous in what one emits) been provisionally acceptable as seeming to the reporter a fair expansion of "auto-pistol." The "auto" there doesn't stand for automobile :) But if the Taurus gets to be "semi-automatic," then this exception no longer applies.

The NRA publications have a column which attempts to present use of guns for self defense in a positive light.

Other than those pubs, I rarely see this kind of thing on the news. The media is after ratings, after all, and negative sells.

CNN had a short piece on the other night about a store owner in Texas (?) who thwarted an armed robbery. She had a gun under the counter and was "muzzle to muzzle" with the bad guy for a few seconds, then shot at him as he took off. (Missed)

Anyway, I'd love to see routine coverage of this in the mainstream media, but it just doesn't appear likely. Who profits? The media probably doesn't see it as a money-maker, so, even if it is widespread, the public at large is unaware.

What's the point? Well, it is the other side of the story to this shootout between morons. Not all uses of guns are bad.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Two men drove through east Orange County with guns blazing Wednesday and one of them had his children with him. He told Channel 9 he was firing his gun to protect his children.

The father and former corrections officer was about to drop off his kids at a school near Goldenrod Road, not far from Chickasaw Elementary, when tempers flared and bullets started flying.

The dad said the van in front of him was driving too slow, so he passed and gunfire was exchanged. Deputies said that's when dad dropped off the kids, found the van and, crouching in a yard, popped off a few more shots.

It was in his own east Orange County neighborhood that 40-year-old Louis Davis admitted to Channel 9 he opened fire on another driver as his frightened 6-year-old and 11-year-old children watched. Davis said he did it to protect them.

"I called 911, but if someone's firing at me, by God I'm going to protect myself and my family," Davis told Eyewitness News.

Davis claims a gun was not the first weapon 44-year-old Victor Vilchez used against him.

"I sped up and got in front of him and he rammed my white Honda, rammed right in the back of it. My kids were terrified. They were all crying," Davis said.

Vilchez wasn't willing to share his side of the story as deputies carted him off, but the sheriff's office said the final confrontation between the two men should have never happened.

Deputies said Davis, who Eyewitness News confirmed is a former corrections officer, dropped his kids off and came back looking for Vilchez.

"I saw a man running and shooting a gun. I wasn't going to stop there [in my car]," said eyewitness Brenda Thompson.

No one was shot, but Thompson got caught first too close to Davis and then Vilchez.

"He was going straight, then all of a sudden he t-boned me," Thompson said.

"You got bullets flying everywhere. This is ridiculous. I think it's a good thing they have both been arrested," said Deputy Carlos Padilla, Orange County Sheriff's Office.

Both men face weapons, attempted murder and aggravated child abuse charges. In addition to that, Vilchez faces another charge of battery with a vehicle.

Both of the men involved in the shooting claimed they had concealed weapons permits. If that is the case, the sheriff's office said it will likely petition to have them revoked.

Gee, yeasterday there were probably hundreds of road rage incidents around the country, and at least 150 people die in car accidents on average every day. Some of those deaths involve road rage and aggressive driving, some involve Drunk driving and repeat offenders.

Only the one with the SCARRY gun and two permit holders is reported!!

Why is that?? Because it is an extremey unusual event, much like a lunar eclipse. And the liberal media love to report this stuff.

Yes sir, at the end of the video segment reporting this incident they made it a point that there were 1,000 permit holders in Orange County. I think there are way more than that? anyway, check the video....

I think you guys are making a couple of mistakes here.

1) "Kel-Tec doesn't make any .38s!"
Uh, last I checked, they make plenty of .380s. Non-gun people don't know the zero means anything, they dropped it just as if you wrote $45 instead of $45.00.

2) "Kel-Tec doesn't make a full-auto pistol!"
Are you guys truly unaware that semi-automatic pistols have been called "automatics" for over a hundred years? Heck, .45ACP stands for .45 Automatic Colt Pistol. It just means a gun which automatically ejects and recocks.

and a 38 calibre Keltec automatic.

Typical media gun report... guy that doesn't know the difference between his a$$, and a hole in the gun... writing stories about guns.

Two guys that probably need to have their permits pulled. And at least one guy that needs to go to jail for a long time. It happens...

By itself it would have been fine, but not when the author called the Taurus a "semi-automatic" earlier in the same sentence. That leaves us with three options:

1. Taurus makes an autoloader that doesn't automatically cock (or vice-versa)
2. The author doesn't know guns and called a revolver a semi-automatic
3. The author doesn't know guns and can't identify caliber or type of gun

A very quick Google search could have fixed this.

They are supposed to be on our side but only end up hurting gun rights for the rest of us.

Just because someone has a gun, it doesn't mean he's on "our side". I'm assuming by "our side" you mean High Road: responsible, law-abiding, armed citizens. Other than being armed, neither of these cretins displayed any of those characteristics.

Every group has bad apples, the best thing to do is chuck them when they turn up. If the facts show that either of them were in the wrong then I hope they both get the maximum penalty applicable.

What happened to the days of punching someone?

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But, no one dies from stray bullets and we don't get bad press. And, it doesn't make the news for more than 10 seconds.

Okay I guess we need a hothead law. Maybe we can incorporate this into the ccw class. Push someone to the point of making them lose their temper, if they don't make it to a certain point, no permit for you; come back one year. Not a step in the right direction for us. We could ban guns and just start throwing pipe bombs at each other. Jk

You forgot option 4: he's quoting someone else, like maybe a police officer who is clueless or had a slip of the tongue while talking to a reporter.

Seriously, I hate anti-gun news pieces as much as anyone else, but you guys go on a witch-hunt every time a reporter gets something wrong. Does it REALLY change the meaning of the article to say "a .38-caliber KelTec" instead of "a .380-caliber KelTec"? It's a minor technical detail, how much research do you want them to do? It's unrealistic to expect a sentence like "...used a Kel-Tec pistol chambered in .380ACP, also known as 9mm kurz ("short" in German) as the cartridge was developed on a shortened 9mm parabellum case to be slightly more concealable."

So true, I didn't pay mind to the inaccuracies of the weapons being used as the bigger picture is the important thing here.

These two men should have known better. Having the weapon on your person should be a deterrent to allowing situations like that to escalate. Honestly, I find that now that I carry I have become more passive than back in the days when I wasn't allowed to carry in the peoples republic of New York City.
