Well I was browsing over the Brady Campaign's website looking through all the BS about the gun lobby, NRA, dangerous assualt weapons, and .38 caliber automatics. Yep that's right, the BC says there are .38 caliber fully automatic weapons.

Here what they said in the 'assorted crimes and misdeeds of ccw':

Orange County, FL • February 20, 2008. A “road rage” incident between Louis Davis, 40,
and Victor Vilchez, 44, both holders of CCW licenses, resulted in an exchange of gunfire in a
residential neighborhood. Davis, who was taking his 6 and 11-year-old daughters to elementary
school, began firing at Vilchez, who returned fire. Davis dropped his daughters off and continued
to pursue Vilchez until Vilchez crashed into a passing vehicle. Police recovered a .45 caliber
semi-automatic weapon and a .38 caliber fully automatic weapon from the vehicles.
Wow. Either they mean 9mm or they need to get their facts straight.
Here's the webpage: http://www.bradycenter.org/xshare/pdf/facts/2008-ccw-crimes-misdeeds.pdf

Sure, .38 Supers have been around since what, the 1930's?

And the guy was in a gun battle with another motorist, stopped to drop his kids off at school, then continued the chase and gunfight????

The first thing that popped into my mind: I recall reading about the guns taken from one of the Depression era bank-robbing gangs. I don't remember which gang it was. I believe one of the guns was a 1911 in .38 super which had been modified to fire full auto and had been fitted with a forward grip from a Thompson and an extended magazine. So, it's at least possible.

A .380 submachine gun would be another possibility. There are a number of those out there.

More likely, though, is that the Brady clowns need to get their facts straight (as usual).

Remember... according to the Brady's, there is no difference between semi-auto and full-auto.

So that .380 pistol is an automatic weapon to them

Sure there are...

I currently own a Colt Super .38 Automatic and two .38 Special autopistols; a Colt National Match and a Smith & Wesson Model 52.

None of them are fully automatic.

And yes, Pigspitter. 9mm is actually 0.356 inches, very close indeed to the standard 0.357 or 0.358 inches of the .38 Special/.357 Magnum family of cartridges.

The Mac 11 shoots a .380 I think...

Kind of hard to conceal that in a IWB holster... :p

Occam's razor: The simplest explanation is usually correct one.

And in this case the simplest explanation is that Brady Bunch are idiots. You can't believe any thing typed up for their site especially things like firearm terms and calibers.

According to several news sources I have read through the years there are also .9mm semi-autos as well...

I'm sorry, but couldn't resist when you mentioned the guy stopped to drop his kids off at school.

Doesn't 9mm translate out roughly to about .38 inches?

Actually its more like .355...

.38 Special and .357 Magnum bullets usually are .357-.358 diameter, but then again, you can load .355 bullets (9mm and .380 auto) in a .38 Special and .357 Magnum cartridges and the bullets will shoot just fine.

If you try to shoot .357 bullets through a .355 bore (meaning .355 groove diameter), it will work but you will likely spike pressures to unsafe levels.

Clear as mud? :banghead::D

Police: Dad Driving Girls To School Exchanged Road Rage Gunfire

UPDATED: 4:16 pm EST February 20, 2008

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Two men, including one who was driving his two girls to school, were arrested on Wednesday morning after they exchanged gunfire in a road rage incident, according to Orange County sheriff's deputies.

Louis A. Davis, 40, and Victor Vilchez, 44, were charged with aggravated burglary with a vehicle following the incident that began on Egan Drive near Goldenrod Road and ended near Chickasaw Elementary School.

Davis, who was driving his 11-year-old and 6-year-old girls to school in his Honda, cut off a van driven by Vilchez, Orange County sheriff's deputies said.

Vilchez then rear-ended the Honda, and shots were fired from both vehicles, deputies said.

Davis told Local 6 News that he shot at the van in self-defense.

"I wasn't trying to harm at all," Davis said. "As you can look at the van, it probably has bullet holes in it because I was trying to shoot his tires."

Davis dropped his girls off at home and began chasing Vilchez, deputies said.

"I saw a man running, just shooting, shooting, shooting out in the open," said Brenda Thompson, whose car was T-boned by Vilchez while he was fleeing Davis.

No one was injured in the incident.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and more charges may be filed against Davis and Vilchez.

There's no reason why not.. I mean.. anything is possible, right? .38 on full-auto? That's like the people who said reaching the moon was impossible...

Don't get me wrong, though. If I was gunna make any pistol cartridge full-auto it'd be the .45, but.. oh, wait...

Hey, here's an idea. How many would buy a full-auto chambered in .45LC?

M11A1 in .380 auto. It is entirely possible that it was a registered NFA item (though unlikely) or that it was an illegal conversion.

If you try to shoot .357 bullets through a .355 bore (meaning .355 groove diameter), it will work but you will likely spike pressures to unsafe levels.

Actually, it will work fine... the pressure required to swage a relatively soft lead bullet down a few thousandths is on the order of a few hundred psi- relatively insignificant.

Victor Vilchez probably did not have a CCW, as he was convicted of aggravated battery in 1992, according to the Orange county court website. In fact, neither of them are pillars of virtue- both have multiple misdemeanor convictions for theft and various other petty crimes. Sounds to me like two hoods that have escalated their activity. Nothing to see here.

The two cases are pending in the court.

I have a S&W M52 .38 special semi-auto. Not real common. Only shoots wadcutters, and only holds 5 rounds in the magazine.

If you are talking about .380 pistols like Bersas, Berettas, Colt Ponies, and the like, then the Brady's are correct in that they are "automatic" pistols. They are automatic like the 1911 is an automatic or the Colt 1903 whose calibers are .45 acp and .32 acp where acp stands for Automatic Colt Pistol.

They are not "fully automatic" as noted above in the OP. In fact, the OP made the specific distinction between a semi-auto and a fully auto pistol.

An autoloading pistol is an automatic pistol, even if it isn't a "fully automatic" pistol.

Of course, we hear on the news all the mayhem caused by "semi-automatic machine guns."

They are a bunch of idiots.

It was only a .38 caliber full auto so I wouldn't have been too worried...
...but lemme tell ya, if that thing woulda had a barrel shroud...well, I'm not afraid to admit that I'd be spellin' "HELP" in my dr. dentons.
