Hi!

I'm thinking about getting a bolt action rifle to be used almost exclusively for competition target shooting (not official matches, my friends and I do a lot of competition with each other). I'd like something about $500 or less, if possible.

First of all, what caliber? Will .22lr be enough for out to 300 yards? How about 22 hornet? Or would .223 or .243 be better?

I have been considering a Savage rifle. Which model would you recommend, or would you recommend a different make?

Thanks!

~Dale

D,

At 300 the .22LR is not going to have much oomph left behind it. Pretty much a rainbow arc to get there. Any wind..... forget it.

I'd advise a .223 for your project. Ammo is relatively cheap, cheaper to reload than larger bores, low recoil, and accuracy is excellent.

Out to 300 yards informal benchrest under $500 (Your joking right).

You don't need a benchrest rifle. What you need is a varmint rifle. Any varmint rifle worth a squirrels nuts will get you to 300 yards with no problem.

I would go with the Savage 12 BVSS, Model 12 Varminter Low Profile or the Remington 700 VLS. Why them they are out of my budget right? Well, the 700 SPS line is crap pure and simple the stock is hollow and reverberates noise every time you fire. The look like crap fit and finish are the absolute worst. Same goes for any of the fugly looking remingtons with the cheap crappy injection molded lead infused Chineese stock. Thank You Cherrybus for making Remington in to a company that produces Turds with stock.
I personally woud go with either of the savage's in 22-250 or 243. The 243 will allow you to use slightly heiver bullets. I woul make sure to get a 9" twist on the 22-250 that way you could shoot the 75gr SMK bullets if you wanted. The 9.25" twist in the 243 will allow you to go with some heiver match bullets as well. This is only good if you reload.

Now we need to talk about optics. No Tasco 3-9x40mm scope is going to get you out to 300 yards. I am so sick of hearing 3-9x40mm. You are going to want a scope with some azz behind it. 4-16x40mm would be the smallest I would go. I would look at Weaver, Nikon Bushnell elite 3200 or 4200, Burris, Pentax, or Mueller Optics. I myself like the Bushnell elite 4200 my 308 has a 6-24x40mm. Leupold is ok but in my eyes not as good as the Weaver Nikon or Bushnell in this price range. I have a Leupold VX-II 6-18x40mm it is not a birght nor as clear as my 4200 and when I make adjustments to the power setting the eye relief changes by at least three inches. As soon as I can afford one I am dumping this junk Leupold and getting anoter Bushnell elite 4200.

Their a Savage with a Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40mm chambered in a 22-250 and you will be smoking your buddies on the range in no time. Then you can start shooting varmints as well. That is more fun baby oil and a waterbed.

Thanks for everything so far, guys!

cpttango30,

That was just a ballpark figure. If $500 is to low, it's to low - I'll just need to save up a little longer. :) What about the Savage 12 FV: http://www.savagearms.com/12fv.htm ? That can be had in 223 or 243 and suggested retail is only $620. Of course, I haven't actually seen the rifle in person, so that may be a dumb question...

hps1,

Does Savage still produce the FP10? I can't find it on their website.

You could go for a remington 700 SPS varmint in .223 that would pretty much suit your needs. They also have it in 22-250 if you like, but if i were you i'd go for .223, as it is cheaper to shoot and doesn't burn up your barrel as fast. You can get an SPS varmint for about 500.

It is under the LE or Law Enforcement. I like the 10FP Also a Falcon Menace in 4-14X44 or 10X42. I have shot a 10FP with a Falcon Menace 10X42 and it is a good combination. The scope is the best
I have used. In my opinion better than Leupold and It can be Had for around $300.

Not sure what Savage is doing, but for some reason they are restricting access to the LE line without permission. Guess they don't want to sell the LE line to civilians any more???? I just tricked their web site into displaying the information by going to:

http://www.savagearms.com/images/centerfire/varmint/12Varminter.jpg

OK! I give up; link will not work! Use cpttango30's link above, that's what I did.

Click on "Law Enforcement" button, then put your cursor on the "Centerfire" button and move it left to right and/or in a circular manner rapidly (across several buttons on either side of LE button. A drop down menu will appear showing the FP line. Morre than one way to skin a cat!;)

Here's everything except the picture.

Actually, you can get their directly. Just click on "Law Enforcement" and it will bring up the page. Over on the left hand side, just under the main menu, there is the navigation for the law enforcement page. There is just one link there, so it's easy to miss. The link is Law Enforcement Series and when you mouse over, a list pops out that has links to the specific models (10FP, 110FP, etc).

I looked the gun up on Gun Genie and found a shop in the area that sells it for $570.

What would be the differences between the 10FP and the 12FV? Aside from more caliber options and slightly lower price on the 12FV and the fact that the 10FP is a tad shorter (which I like), I can't really see any except that it seems the 10FP has a swivel bi-pod mount and the 12FV doesn't.

Also, how easy is it to get wood stock for either gun?

That's the good thing about Savage rifles. There are literally tons of aftermarket goodies and endless stocks available. You can spend as much as you wish but they shoot great right out of the box.:D

My FP10 shoots bughole groups w/handloads and under 1" @ 100 with every factory ammo I tried, including Winchester white box w/3x9 Burris FFII scope. I bought it to use as a predator rifle and it is really too heavy for that but sure can't fault the way it shoots.

the neatest target rifle i've seen in a long time is the remington x-r 100! the one i saw in a scheel's store... it was a 204 cal. with a good scope on it and the price was out of my range at $1200 ........... they are a nice rifle though with a long heavy barrel and a laminated thumbhole stock.... i haven't heard much about em in the gun mags so i don't what the big boys up town think of em...........

I'd be interested to hear about .17 capabilities as well.

I looked up the Rugers, but it seems that even the Hawkeye isn't as accurate as some of the Savage guns that can be had for around the same price.

300 is too far for a 17. Get a Savage Model 12 in 223, and make sure you get a 1-7 twist barrel (which Remington doesn't bother to make), and you can shoot Black Hills 77g SMK factory ammo to 600 with ease. And do well.

Have you thought about the CZ varmint rifles?

Scaled down mauser action, available in curly maple, walnut, laminated or kevlar stock, heavy barrel, single set trigger, 5 round detachable mag, .223 or .204.

Price ranges from $600-900 RRP depending on calibre and configuration.

For out to 300 yards a Savage 12FV or BVSS in .223 would be just the ticket. I shoot a 12FV in .243, but only because we also shoot 'yotes at longer distances. Mine has a Sharpshooter Supply LVT stock with a Weaver Grand Slam 6.5-20 on it, shoots sub 1/2 MOA every day.

+1 for Remington 700 Varmint SPS in .223 Remington. Mine cost right around $515.00. This rifle consistently prints 0.18" at 100 yards with factory ammo.

Edit to add: I disagree that you cannot fire the .22LR effectively at 300 yards. At 225 yards, I have maintained consistent MOA groups with a Ruger heavy barrel 10/22. The groups measured right around 1.9". There are several scopes on the market that make such shots doable.

1-7? Are you talking about aftermarket barrels? Because, as far as I can see, all of Savage's model 12s have 1 in 9" for .223.
