If so can they own silencers and full autos? I was always under the impression that they were not.

From http://www.nraila.org/statelawpdfs/CASL.pdf:

MACHINE GUNS AND OTHER FIREARMS
A machine gun is defined as any firearm, which
shoots, or is designed to shoot, automatically, more than
one shot, without manual reloading, by single function of
the trigger. The term also includes any conversion part,
frame or receiver of a machine gun, or any firearm deemed
as such by the federal government. Upon a showing of
good cause, a permit for possession and/or transportation
may be issued by the Department of Justice. It has been
reported that the Department of Justice refuses to grant
such permits.

I suspect that the CA DoJ does grant permits to the folks in the movie industry, though.

Only movie studios have MGs in CA.

Jeez man, they don't trust you with an AR15... you think you can own an M16?

CA is a very limited "Class 3" state. Pretty much all NFA stuff is technically legal, you just have to have NFA and CADOJ permission. Getting a DOJ weapons permit for NFA stuff is just about impossible.

However, there are a couple NFA items that do not require CADOJ permission. AOWs(except pen guns), DDs less than .60, and C&R SBS/SBR are exempt from CADOJ control, just need NFA permission. And the trust option works if you can't get a CLEO sign-off.

The sad thing is that the AW regs still apply even with a tax stamp, so you ahve to make sure what ever you build is still legal.
