What about the Model 29? Good gun, but Dirty Harry made it an object of religious worship.

But it's the most powerful handgun in the world!
It was not and is not the most powerful handgun, but was the most powerful production handgun at the time.

Any gun you have to spend twice as much on as it cost originally to make it shoot like it should have right out of the box in the first place.

I.M.O. , 10-22, AR-15, M1 GARRAND, PRE 64 WINCHESTER, WINCHESTER 94, AK-47, MARLIN 39. Now that that is over with. not that there is anything horrificly wrong with this batch of rifles. heck, there are several i wouldnt mind owning. but the way people rant and rave over them, you would think that GOD had created them!

Garand It's kinda like everyones fat old great aunt. She's big, fat, and only liked by a few for sentimental value.

What parts of the garand are prone to failure? I admit I don't know much about them.

The operating rod will bend if you use the wrong ammo (most commercial stuff) and then the gun is broken. Proper military ammo intended for a Garand won't cause this problem, of course. The issue is with the powder burning speed and how much pressure is left at the gas port.

Not a breakage issue, but being unable to top-off the internal magazine/clip arrangement isn't a plus either.

And if the truth is known, if for some reason the SHTF, most of you would hope you have a Garand or AR and hundreds of rounds of milspec ammo in hand. And not your gussied up hunting rifle...Garand, a real mans rifle...

I carried a Garand in combat. As an Adviser, I was issued an M2 Carbine which got wrapped around a tree, and I bummed a Garand from the ARVN.

In the hands of a man who knows how to use it, the Garand is a superb combat weapon. And I say that having also used the AK 47, the M16 and the M14 in combat.

Almost any winchester rifle.

I think AR's are overrated but may be on the verge of changing my mind - not 100% sure yet.

Benelli shotguns - I think I'll save several hundred dollars plus and use my second hand remington 870. It was $240 and in great shape and never once hiccupped.

Colts and glocks

Beretta anything.

My vote for most overrated would go to the KAC SR-25. There are plenty of other semi-auto .308 rifles out there that provide the same or better accuracy for half the price.

On the Remington 700's... we've noticed the new ones just don't seem to have the same fit/finish/quality of the older ones. Fortunately there are plenty of aftermarket actions available for building a custom rifle, and most of them are higher quality anyway.

I'm not sure I'd say that AK's are overrated. The rifle was designed to be manufactured and assembled in a tent. They're easy to make, easier to use, rugged as heck, and relatively inexpensive. They're not 1000-yard shooters - they were never designed to be - but the ones we have are very effective out to 500-600 yards. Any inaccuracy at ranges longer than that are more likely due to my eyes than the rifle.

I'm glad to see that someone proposed an airsoft rifle to "replace" the AR15/M16 rifle. That shows the reality of the AR haters. :p

I view the AK as overrated only because it has terrible, horrible sights and ergos, whereas (NOW at least) there are other guns just as too-hell-and-back reliable, which also happen to have great ergos - for example, the Robinson XCR - same exact operating system as an AK, but actually good ergos; very good. And AKs can most assuredly jam like any other rifle - I've had it happen more than once.

On the Perazzis, yes, we've heard of them, but the question asks only about *rifles*.

But now that you mention that, I'd say any double rifle over $20,000 has GOT to be overrated no matter how good it is, because there are perfectly reliable and functional doubles well under $20K.

I was issued an M2 Carbine which got wrapped around a tree

What do you mean by that, Vern?

Before people knock the AK sights...

I grew up hunting with an old Norinco SKS. Taking shots at 100 yards when I was 10 years old was not uncommon. I am much more familiar with the russian-type sights than the american style sights. My AR-15 I recently built is the first gun with that type of sight system.

I was more accurate with the AK than the AR at 100 yards with iron sights.

The AK sights arn't terrible, they are just different.

mauser 98 it lost in ww1 against the enfield
it lost in ww2 against the enfield
You can make a point that the Germans won WWI -- they defeated the Russians, who signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk in 1917. They re-trained and re-fitted their eastern forces and turned on the Allies in 1918, and smashed them -- the Allies were only saved by the timely intervention of American troops.

Similarly, it was American might that beat the Germans in the west in WWII -- and we did it while beating the Japanese at the same time.

What about the Model 29? Good gun, but Dirty Harry made it an object of religious worship.

Can't be the Model 29. When you wrap your hands around an older 29-2, with the deep polished bluing, and walnut stocks, you know you are handling a thing of both beauty and function.

To me, there is a difference between overrated and overpriced.

LOTS of rifles are overpriced, I won't even get into that.

I think ARs & M16s are overrated, and ditto for SKS's, AK47s. Steyr AUGs are not overrated, even though they are more expensive.

10/22s are overrated. Mine was an unreliable piece of junk, until I sent it back to Ruger twice. The stock spring was apparently too stiff for any factory ammo to cycle reliably. Sold it off after it was fixed, and got a 77/22. Never looked back. It is easily twice as accurate as a stock 10/22.

I'm more used to notch and post style sights myself. With a day of practice I'm sure I could get up to snuff with a peep sight, but I find that I tend to line the two sights up more precisely with the notch and post variety.
