New Marlin Guide Gun!

Salvo,

I know I have told you before but I LOVE that rifle. That was my number one inspiration. My dream has been to make my rifle a hybrid of yours and my old Steyr Scout.

Next, old "Et in Arcadia Ego," or "Arcadia" for short, is going back in for some more mods. I am going to get a cartridge trap installed in the stock to replace the nylon butt-cuff I currently use. I am also going to have the forend thinned and the stock modified for the use of a Ching Sling.

Stratus, that is flippin sweet.

But Greg Bell, you should be ashamed of yourself for showing up the OP with the coolest rifle in the history of the world there....I'm not worthy!!!!! :D

Great idea, rc! Cheap, simple and effective - couldn't ask for a more practical solution.

The only one of my several LA's that wears optics is my old Savage 99F in .308. All the rest, including the early model 1895G, have either a Williams or Lyman receiver sight.

Pairing them with a Firesight FO bead has really helped me restore some of the pick-up speed and definition I lost when I got bifocals. Much sharper image than the gold bead for me, even with the smaller "dot".

Personally, it isn't aesthetics that have kept scopes off of my LA carbines; It's mainly the fact that 90%+ of the time when I'm using them in the field, hunting or just woods bumming, I prefer to hand carry them rather than use the sling or strap.

They've all got one, but it just seems handier and more natural to me to grasp them around the natural balance point. A conventionally mounted scope and even most types of non-magnifying optical sight makes doing that awkward and a good deal less comfortable for me.

Very nice gun! I was looking at one of these last week.

I can tell that you're excited by your new rifle...your socks and clothes were strewn around with the rifle as the center of the pic's. My wife saw these pics and she was already commenting how we're cut from the same mold.

So classic. I'm glad you're enthuised. Stay safe and have fun with that rifle.

stratus, here's my Guide Gun ...

Greg, I agree with your last post 100%.

:)

but I went all stainless with a Nikon 3x9x40 Prostaff
Why do you have it mounted so dang far back?

That sucker would give me a "scope eyebrow" the first shot on a 45-70!

rc

the_right_reverend, does that scope ever bash you on the nose when you shoot your Guide Gun? I'm not sure I could handle a scope being that far back on the receiver.

HA!! I see you beat me to it rc! :D

:)

Nice guns boy's!!

As for that scope being too far back.....well you guy's must have long necks cause it looks like it's only a half inch back of the hammer!

Leadhead, I think you're looking at the wrong photo. The Guide Gun just above is mine ... we're asking about the right reverend's rifle on Page 1.

:)

And the only one of my several lever-actions that has a scope on it is my Savage 99 "Brush Gun", chambered in .358 Winchester. This rifle is equipped with an old Redfield "Widefield" 1X5, installed on a Weaver "TipOff" mount/rings system that allows me to instantly access the irons in the event of scope failure or snow on the lens. This set-up is one of my favorite go-to guns for whitetails, hogs and black bear.

to far back???? Its works just fine, Its the d@mn bifocals that are all screwed up..... I slide them down on my nose and look over the top of them and the world is beautiful:D

Woops, I was looking at yours 1858.....

Heheh, greg and I are buds and he was a big factor in my decision to buy this rifle. Anyway, watch her grow! It'll be slow.

Big Bores are mighty addictive... and they tend to reproduce in the safe. Be warned.

From the left the third, fourth, fifth and sixth rifles are Marlin 1895's

The Marlin Guide Gun is about as perfect a hunting rifle as they make. Very easy to carry, accurate and "devastating" (the word everyone used to describe the performance of a 425 grain Beartooth "Pile Driver Jr" jogging along at less than 1500 fps had on an Idaho Black Bear. Complete NE-SW penetration, excellent thumb sized wound channel and no tracking required.)

My current favorite is the Marlin 1895 LTD III. It has the good looks of the Cowboy (octagon barrel) and the handy size of the Guide Gun.

Greg and Salvo, does yours have an extended magazine, or is it an SBR, or something? I just looked at mine and if I took it down to 16" it looks like it would still overhang the mag tube by and inch or so. Yours looks fantastic.

Thanks waterhouse, yes they are extended magazine tubes. Mine was cut down from a 1895CB magazine. Not sure what Greg's is from, probably the same and had it brushed chrome finish I would guess.

I don't usually check out the rifle forum but that's going to have to change. RC Model's "O Ring" tip is slicker 'n snail snot and I'm going to be all over it real soon.

I've "kinda sorta" got an 1895. It's a WWG "Alaskan Guide" in .457WWMag but I've only fed it 45-70 so far.

Salvo, I believe Greg's is stainless that has been polished a bit. I know for a fact he has the stainless version. And oh my god look at all those Marlins... I say "wow" wholeheartedly. Nice collection, Mo.

There is a blued guide gun at the shop down the road I keep looking at. I keep thinking how sexy it would be to cut it down to 14 inches (or about flush with the factory tube). Now that would be a fire breather!

I thought I would come to this forum to take a break from the marlin owners forum and look at what I end up looking at. Nice gun if nobody has said it yet go over to marlinowners.com great forum

For anyone that's interested in replacing the safety on their Guide Gun, XLR or any other Marlin 1894/1895, you can buy a safety replacement screw from www.longhunt.com for $17. I emailed Jim asking him if the safety replacement screw for the '94 will work for the '95. Here's his reply ...

"Yes, the safety replacement will fit the 336/1895 Marlins. Sorry, but we don't have stainless ones.
Thanks,
Jim"

DISCLAIMER: Obviously, I'm not suggesting or recommending that anyone here replaces their safety. ;)

GREAT collection by the way ... what are the others in the photo? I'm trying to buy a NIB '95 Ltd from a local gun shop owner but he's not being very cooperative and now I can see why.
