COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A New Jersey man has been shot and killed at an Alcoholic Anonymous center in South Carolina in what police say was a thwarted robbery.

The State newspaper reported that Columbia police said Sunday that a visitor to the AA center shot and killed the 18-year-old man who was trying to rob members there.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said Kayson Helms of Edison, N.J., was shot in the neck, abdomen and chest.

Witnesses said Helms entered the building late Saturday and showed a .25 caliber handgun and demanded whatever those at the center had.

Police did not identify the man who shot Helms, but said the individual had a concealed weapons permit.

I apologize for the following, but damn I would need a drink after that....

on another note? why do so many BG's seem to carry 25's?

None the less, the poor guy who did the shooting now has to deal with the emotional shock of killing another person; regardless of how righteous the shooting was.

I wish him well.

on another note? why do so many BG's seem to carry 25's?

It's a low-pressure cartridge, so the guns can be made out of crappy materials and still withstand the pressure while being sold on the cheap. They're also inherently small due to the small cartridge and, well, thugs don't open carry...

If they are going to illegally carry a concealed handgun however, I'd prefer it be a .25 ACP.

I don't feel bad for the criminal, but I do feel sorry for the guy who has to deal with shooting him, especially if that's piled atop alcoholism. That's a recipe for self-destruction.

Well, that is kind of pretty desperate. Robbing a group that spent all thier money on drinks.

Good shoot Mr CCW'er. Rest easy!

About those little 25's Im going to have to thicken my prescription on top of my recent surgery to see those tiny guns.

I dont feel bad for the BG at all.. do feel horrible for the man who was forced to shoot him though... the 25 in the hands of a BG is just a recurring theme that I have seen over and over again....

your average .25 gun can be had for well under 200 bucks. Small, concealable, not as loud and distinct as larger calibers, and cheap. That is probably why such guns are preferred. The low cost is especially attractive to your average broke crook, too.

But thats impossible, 20/20 told me that there was no reliable information about guns being carried actually saving lives.

Good luck to the person who shot the bg, especially if he's having a difficult time with alcohol. All it says is that he was a visitor, so maybe he was there in support of someone else.

Looks to me that the heavy caliber hammered the BG down inflicting enough damage to kill him.

Looks to me three shots. Were there only three fired? Or were there missed ones also?

Im not looking for nit picky trouble... just naturally curious as to how the shooter did while taking the bad guy out of the picture.

Only really desperate people.

If that is where criminals are going to get money... Im glad my permit is pending.

NOT that I have any AA meetings PLANNED in the near future :scrutiny:

Hard times such as they are, the bottle is tempting.

See, now if he was in a bar, or even most restaurants, he wouldn't be able to legally carry there, thank God it was an AA mtg where they rarely sell alcohol for consumption on premises.

Also, good thing the mtg wasn't being held in a school, gvt bldg, or a medical facility, or all three of those options would have been off the table to legally carry in SC, and where mtgs like that are usually held.

You see something like this and makes me think you can get robbed or otherwise attacked w/ a weapon damn near anywhere, and I'd like to see more of these restricted carry areas opened up.

AA attendees pass the hat at the meeting to pay the small expenses associated therewith (coffee, cookies, etc.). Attendees typically toss in a dollar or two. If fifty members attend, that's fifty to a hundred bucks in small bills. Tempting target for a small time robber and/or junkie. But he was an idiot to use a gun. He could have waited for the right moment, grabbed the hat and ran out the door. Of course, in that case while waiting he might have had to sit through an entire AA meeting ...

I guess he got what he asked for.

...and, at least at some of the groups I've attended, he could have asked for some or all the money--and maybe gotten it.

Here is a link to an updated story, they spend a lot of time discussing the issue of the shooters ID

"Saturday’s shooting featured a rare collision of values: the treasured anonymity of those who seek help at Alcoholics Anonymous, and the normal transparency expected when one person shoots and kills another"

"Police said the shooter’s life may be in danger if his name is disclosed, police spokesman Brick Lewis said Monday.

“There is a possibility he could be targeted,” Lewis said.
Click here to find out more!

Lewis said it did not appear to be a gang situation, but declined to elaborate. He did say police are investigating whether the would-be robber had an accomplice."

Sounds like reason enough to NOT reveal his name ever.

Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and not call him an alcoholic...he may have just been there because the judge ordered him to attend after a receiving a dui.

He should have kept his criminal activity to New Jersey. He would have been safer victimizing people there than in South Carolina.

Sorry to ask, but where are the usual Boo Birds that Monday Morning Quarterback every time a person, CCW permit or not, gets involved in a shooting?

Why no comments like the crap we read regarding the Burger King shooting in Florida?

-Why no comments like these?

I’m sorry but as the facts come in it sounds more and more like this guy stepped in unnecessarily and incorrectly (arguing with an armed robber? Come on.) and got shot for his trouble.

Without being there and seeing what actually happened, and using only the OP as a reference, I opine that this guy let his CCW go to his head. I know that's not going to be popular, but there are many on here who seem that they would be better served by joining their local Police Department/Sheriff's Office, rather than CCW.

How smart is it to start a gunfight under those circumstance? There is a reason the police don't just charge in shooting on an armed robbery call, but rather wait outside to catch the suspect while he's leaving.

My position is this:

John Landers acted unnecessarily and it cost him.

Having a CHP doesn't obligate me to act as some type of police auxillary.

This scenario is a perfect example of what happens when amatuers try to play hero.

Now I'm done

Wonder if being a "sheep dawg" was worth it?

Unless the bad guy directly threatened our good sam it was (IMO) one of the dumbest things he ever did.

I don't expect to be able to change anyone's opinion on this but none of you are going to convince me that unless he was in immediate danger he was an idiot for getting involved.

Just a smattering of the usual comments I get the pleasure of reading anytime a CCW permit holder is involved in a shooting. Every situation is different, every person can choose for themselves;

I would just like to know why we haven't heard the usual chorus this time, is it because the CCW permit holder wasn't shot in the process, so this time it is ok?

Boo Birds, heeeeellllllllllllllllooooo, where are you?

Good shooting by the permit holder and glad to see another of society's finest no longer around to add to their arrest record.
