Listen to your Dogs!

Have they spoken to the guy that pawned it yet? I'd like to know if he stole it or bought it off the jackasses. I hate thieves. I've had an ATV , my dogs, and two car stereos stolen in my life. The most recent was audio equipment taken out of our van at the dealership we bought it from, it was left unlocked by employees. I locked everything up and had it sent to another dealership and what do you know I went and checked and it was unlocked again, they hadn't gotten all of the speakers and were going to come back. They also broke a $500 ac control unit. It had to be towed to that dealer because a mechanic shorted out the computer.....

You can call it a fault, but I don't trust anyone. I stopped a few years ago, been screwed too many times.

My Dad always claimed for someone with evil intent to get to the house they had to get through 18 head of longhorn cattle. Then they much get past the 3 dogs. Where they unfortunate enough to survive the first and second line of defense they would have to deal with him.

I slept very securely when I was growing up.

damn! why didn't i think of longhorns! i'd want video of the face of someone caught away from cover by a longhorn. get a climbable tree in the middle of the yard and let the longhorns tree intruders. collect em at your leisure. i had a friend had a steer that would let you get in the field a ways before he'd come after you made a pitbull look like a kitten

As long as they are good doggies I will listen to them. That boxer looks like a good dog.

I trust my sleeping dog (yellow lab) with my life - honestly. If he wakes up in the middle of the night to a noise he doesn't appreciate, he will let me know with a low growl and his hair on end. I appreciate the growl at night versus a bark as it gives me the element of surprise if someone is in the house. He will not bark if the kids get home late but if one of their friends is first through the door or someone new is in the house, he lets me know.

A few nights ago, he sat up promptly on the end of the bed and let a growl loose. It was 2:30 AM, or thereabouts. I vaugley remember hearing a bump in my sleep and before I had barely woken up but he was already on alert. I grabbed the shotgun, let him out the door, and followed him to investigate.

Finally, after about 5 minutes of searching, I figured out what he'd heard. A string of X-mas lights had slid off a a railing and tapped the floor. As soon as I saw it I knew it's what I'd heard in my sleep but it wasn't a noise he's ever heard.

2 years ago he let me know someone was outside in the cul-de-sac that shouldn't be. We live in a nice neighborhood so for him to be upset with something outside is RARE. I looked outside and I found my neighbors car being broken into. A 911 call and 10 minutes later 4 punks were lined up on the curb in handcuffs. I have no idea how he knew, but he did.

I sleep well knowing that if anyone were to sneak up stairs I'd know before they ever opened the door, and that's plenty of time to arm myself.

Dogs are definately not dumb. I think mine might be half deaf though. She often sleeps through me entering the house when I get home from work  But there is nothing wrong with her nose and when she gets grumbly (hardly ever barks) I can often look out the window to see somebody walking down the street or a stray cat out in the back yard.

I keep everything of mine locked up so I don't always get up to look but I will at least hush her up to listen for noises. This is her (150# Neapolitan Mastiff) on guard watching someone walk down the road out in front of the house.

BACK FROM THE DEAD...

I am fortunate enough to have gotten back both of my rifles as of Friday, March 9th 2012.

My Ruger and CZ rifles were stolen back in 2008. The Ruger was recovered in 2009 and now the CZ has been returned as well. A local detective called me Friday morning and said I could come pick up my CZ 452 Lux. It was picked up in a drug raid in June of 2010 but had been used as evidence so I am just now getting the rifle back.

I am EXTREMELY happy and grateful... this rifle is also missing the magazine like the Ruger I got back but the scope and sling I originally had on the rifle were both still there.

Very grateful to the Spartanburg police department and Sheriff Chuck Wright. They have been doing a great job... not just in getting my rifles back but fighting crime and promoting civilians getting CWPs.

Hey Lopezel.. Small world lol I'm in Spartanburg also.

Excellent! I got a beretta back over a decade later when it was found under the driver's seat of a miscreant's vehicle after a "hot-stop". LA County no less - or maybe Orange County.

LopezEL-- glad you got your property back! (Too) Long time coming! Congrats on your 'endeavouring to persevere'.

That matter satisfactorily settled, I offer apologies in advance for Hijack, but I lived in SparkleCity(Sptg.SC) for 4 years, and referencing Sheriff Chuck Wright, he has my vote for Senator should he offer to serve as effectively as he has as Sheriff:

I know this has previously been reviewed, but IMO well worth another look.

Yea he's about as good of a sheriff as you could ask for.

Wow! I remember when this thread first started. It's fantastic to see it come to a good ending, even if it took years to get there. Congrats. Did they ever run the crime down to the source of the theft?

Shame. Sorry you lost your rifles, but at least they didn't take everything.
I always make it a point to lock my vehicles (ALWAYS) when I am out of sight of them, and also to remove my firearms from my vehicle as soon as I get home.

My dogs bark a lot. but there is a difference in the tone of their bark if it is something serious. PAY ATTENTION! Humans and dogs have lived together for millions of years for a reason. You take care of them and they will take care of you. Even if you are not home several large barking dogs will cause a potential thief to move on to an easier target down the road.

Reading back through the old posts I saw someone mentioned their dog doesn't like people in uniform. I had a semi-rescued dog (former neighborhood stray) who didn't like men in boots and/or hats. Turns out he got chased around and caught and hauled off to the doggy jail a few times by our local constable. :D

Glad you got your rifles back. I'm guilty of not listening to my dogs on occasion. I should know that when my lab goes on alert, its because he hears something going on outside. Too often its because of neighbors across the street but I tend to just expect his barking will deter whatever would-be thieves but I know its not enough, I should always check. My vehicles and doors are always locked (thank growing up in NYC for that) but a locked door just keeps honest people honest.

I pay attention to my pets now. They have more acute senses than I do. We had a tornado pass within a couple thousand feet of my house in the last week or so and my one cat was having an absolute fit just before it passed by. I don't know if I would have done anything different, but I found the cat's reaction rather interesting.

I had stuff stolen from my house years ago and I didn't pay attention to the dogs. I was sleeping at the time.
