I got two of my rifles stolen from my truck today. A CZ 452 lux in 22lr and a Ruger 10/22.

I went squirrel hunting with a friend earlier today and shot a squirrel 100 yards out of a tree with my CZ 452 Lux. I couldn't even believe I hit it but I saw it drop. My friend had my custom ruger 10/22 and wouldn't even attempt a shot at that distance. I dropped him off at his girlfriends house and drove to my place where I proceeded to walk in my house and talk to my girlfriend. I sat at my computer desk and while I was talking to my girlfriend. Both of my dogs (a boxer and a puppy pitbull) started barking like crazy.

I assumed it was my friend that I had dropped off since he had said he was going to come over to my house to help me clean my pistols but when I looked outside the headlights did not look like his car's (It was dark). Well after about 1 minute of my dogs still barking I looked back outside and the car was pulling out of my driveway so I assumed someone had pulled in and made a U turn. You have to understand that my house has a chain linked fence and they stopped in front of my front gate... my truck was sitting behind my house and I didn't even think about my rifles still being in the truck.

When I got off the phone, I walked outside to get my rifles and they were gone. I am SO lucky that they only grabbed the rifles and did not take the gun case with my pistols that we had also been shooting: DW bobtail, DW PM7, XD45, S&W 686 Classic Hunter, Ruger Mark III, and a CZ 75. If they would have grabbed one rifle and that box... all I would have to my name would be the CZ 75 I was carrying and one 22lr rifle.

The thing that is absolutely killing me is that I could have prevented anything from happening if I would have just walked outside and seen what the heck those people were doing in front of my gate. They had the audacity to go through my fence and then close it back up when they left. By the time I looked outside the second time, they were already driving down the road. My dogs warned me that something was not right and I did not listen: I should have. Always listen to your dogs, they know things that you would have no idea about.

I have the serial numbers and everything on both rifles and I did file a police report so if they are pawned, it will come up that they are stolen but it sucks to think that my rifles are in criminal hands right now. I know, I should have never left my doors open and I usually lock my truck but I was not thinking because I was on the phone arguing with my girlfriend about not having any reception while out hunting. If my truck would have been locked, it has an alarm, my house has an alarm, I have two dogs, and I always carry... I never thought this would happen to me. Especially not under my nose. Yall be careful and like I said before, listen to your dogs when they are trying to tell you that something is not right. My puppy pitbull is usually pretty mellow and even tempered but he was growling like a fullgrown adult and I did not listen. I can only fault myself for what happened.

I should have listened to them:

December is the month with the highest rate of house burglaries, also.
We were gone one hour, by a busy street with cars in front of the house.

Old security system did not pass its "checkride".
The burglars had yanked the thick power cable out, which severed it like a royal head at the Tower of London.
Only our house was dark, so we went to the neighbors.

With the present financial problems, '09 will be one of the worst years. And here we have no large industry in trouble.
At least videos of my (then young) son were Not in the camera bag-they take the whole bag and run.
Safe deposit boxes are worth every dollar for cherished photos and videotapes. And what about fires?

My truck was not locked. I was careless and stupid. It wont happen again.

Wish I had your eyes. I can't even see a squirrel at 100 yards.

On another note, your bigger Boxer looks just like my Trey.

Sorry you got your stuff stolen.

Let me get this straight your dogs started barking you look out, it was dark didnt look like your friends headlights. About one minute later you look out again and the car was leaving. From your post it sounds like the gate is at the front and your truck was behind the house.

Is that about right? How long after the car left till you got off the phone and went out to the truck?

It would be very ballsy to pull up and steal your guns in a couple of minutes. Or the driver dropped off someone and came back to pick them up after they broke into your truck if it was a long time till you got off the phone.

I dont know where you live or the layout of the area but in a couple of minutes and your stuff was gone it would almost have to be like they knew you were back and the guns were in the truck, pull up grab them and leave. But then again they didnt take the pistol box but they did pull up and take the rifles. It almost sounds like they followed you home and knew you had rifles at the very least took them and left.

Yes your dog will tell you what is going on long before you know it. I have a dog and I can tell the difference between a cat is next door bark or hey you aint supose to be there bark. He knows the neighbor lady and doesnt bark at her but any one that comes over there he barks at. And one time he was barking alot I look out and see two people trying to break into her house. Called the cops and busted them thanks to my dog telling me what was going on next door. If my dog is barking someone is there that he doesnt know. He is an excellent watch dog. Here is a pick of my dog with a bullet wound last summer from a cop shooting him because he was doing his job. Cop came in my back yard (my dogs yard) looking for witnesses to a b&e across the street cop got scared by my 52 lb dog going towards him to bark at him. Cop 6' 220 or so. He wouldnt bite anybody ever, bark yes. He has gained four lbs since as he got super spoiled.

BULSI, stupid cop! makes me mad when people "ASSUME" you have a viscious animal just because of its size, and it is barking. the real problem with the cop is he was scared of dogs in general, not your particular dog. he should go see the cop shrink to get over his fears. persoanlly, i think that all dogs are freindkly, until either notified, or charged. in 52 years, i have only been charged one time, in thousands of strange dog meatings. there is a reason they are claaed "mans best freind"! anyway, back to the stolen rifles. it does sound like a setup! way to coincidental.not only did somebody know the guns were in your truck, but that you leave your truck unlocked. i hate to say this, but the cops should start with your freinds. unless you were followed by someone on the way home, and they watched you go into your home with binoculars. and that seems pretty far fetched. me, i am paranoid. i lock my vehile if i am going into the house for a jacket, even when it is empty.it has been a long time since anyone has stolen anything from me, and a lot of that is because i have most everything under lock and key. and the fact there is a pitbull prowling the property (fenced yard) isnt actually a bad thing either. she is way more afraid of anything than she is mean. but she does make a statement just by being out there.

When my mutts bark you can tell if they are entertaining themselves or something differant is going on. It's too bad we gotta lock everything up and worry some SOB is ripping us off. Hope you get your rifles back.

Lopez, the timing of the events and how slick those rifles were taken, would make me wonder if those people already knew where the rifles were.
I would suspect someone I know.

I have a hard time believing in coincidences.

Guns stolen from your unlocked truck in your yard after shooting them.

I'd look at people you know or people that know the people you know.

Never Let Your Guard Down - Termites Stolen

Don't have dogs, but, I can say complacency has its cost. I live in a very quite, middle class neighborhood. Older homes - most of my neighbors are in their 50s-60s. Rarely any major crime! A couple of years ago, I had a portable air compressor and a tool box stolen out of my garage while I was home. Left the garage door up, I was in the house. Both items had handles that made them easy to grab. Although, I can't prove it, I am 99% sure, it was a garbage collector who works the neighborhood. They are 4-5 guys who run an old truck. They will park and the men will go up and down the street to houses they serve. They pick the garbage up at the back-doors. They were in the area that day (next door and most likely came through my yard). I was told by a local deputy that they had been banned from a country store just up the road for shop-lifting. Small cost for a lesson learned about lax security - never saw my tools or air compressor again. Upside - most people in the neighborhood have now quit using them.

Bottom line - I don't care how safe you feel. Never let your guard down.

One last story (Stolen Termites): Last year, I tore out some landscaping timbers on my property and they were heavily infested with termites. I stacked them near the road (not wanting to bring them closer to my house). A friend who lives down the road from me has a utility trailer and he said he would take them to his farm and burn them. Next day they were gone! I called my friend to thank him and he said he had not picked them up. In my peaceful neighborhood - someone stole all my termites.

LopezEL to bad about your rifles. Your 2 dogs are really cute. I like the photo of them taking a nap. I agree it could be someone you know or someone who saw your guns when you where shooting. Either way it sucks.

BULLSI did the cop get in trouble for shooting your dog? I'm sure you were pissed.

I will agree that a good dog with half a dog brain is the best eyes and ears security warning system you can have. Unfortunately I have had dogs that are kind of like my wife. Non stop yapping so you don't have a contrast of silence to know the noise has meaning.

As far as the theft it definitely had forethought and was not just random. They must of seen the guns and followed you home and did a quick can do calculation for a run and grab.

Why wouldn't you or your buddy feel comfortable trying 100 yd shots at a squirrel with either of those rifles? Seems either should be better than average accuracy, at least 2 MOA or better. Definitely a circle within the design parameter of a tree rat. I do understand. I couldn't hit one at that range probably with a buck roger's laser.

I agree. It has to be someone close by that has been watching us. By us, I mean my brother that lives next door too. I saw three guys snooping around his backyard late at night the day after we came home after visiting our parents (Thanksgiving). They hauled butt as soon as they heard me walk out my backdoor.

Those guys had to be watching both our houses and noticed that we hadn't been home in a while. They were probably looking around for open windows/doors. It was very ballsy of them to open my gate, walk in the back to my truck, take the rifles, walk back out to the front, close the gate, and leave.

I am very careful about loading up for hunting trips, etc. I always pull in the back but they had to have known the rifles were back there yesterday. I have a strong feeling I know who the people are but I cant prove it. They live three houses down the street on the right. I walked down there with my boxer late last night and when I asked about the car parked in their driveway they said it was a "friend's" but that it didn't run (dead battery, no alternator, and no gas). While the police was filling out the police report, I saw the car heading off down the street so I told the officer. Next thing I know the interceptor was screeching tires in my driveway saying he would be right back. He pulled them over and told us the female driving the car said she was going to "work" at 11pm. Well, from what they had said earlier the car didn't run so how could she rely on it for work transportation? They are the ones with my rifles in my eyes. I will be watching them closely.

Christmas eve, 1978. Thieves walked in and just started looting the house. My uncle showed up to drop off our beagles - he'd been hunting with. They dropped most things and fled (took the jewelry, but left the guns, tools, etc. they were packing up). Kept coming back for a year - we'd see them in the woods, etc. Very scary.

We got a doberman and case closed. The doberman was such a great family animal, we got another. What great animals and companions. Get one.

I certainly know I sleep better with a dog in the house I know will bark if someone comes to the house who shouldn't. My roomate doesn't like dogs in the house, even though I fiancee bring her half-boxer half-pit mix over some times when she stays the night. My roomate makes a habit of letting people come over at all times of the day, so one night when she was over with all healthy and fit sixty five pounds 'Harely', I got woken up by barking, pulled on my self-jeans shorts with a snub revolver in my pocket and put Harely on the leash to see who it was. Well my roomates girlfriend who came over at four in the morning (she go off work) got the full scare of Harely jumping at her face without any warning to me.

When I was about nine my parents had gotten me my first dog at seven, a little former puppy mill mother Jack Russell Terrier, best dog in the world I see to this day. One night my neighbor's kids were drunk and hanging out in our tree bed, about half an acre of palm fronds, all kinds of flower trees, and citrus trees, she got up and ran throughout the house barking mad and went from my room into my parent's room and rand around the bed, jumping on the bed, jumping on my dad as she barked out the window. My dad who's usually an anti took out his double barrel twelve gauge (he only owns a Remington 70 as his other gun) and yes it was loaded, to put the fear of God into those dumb kids.

Security Alarms are great, but I will always want a dog first. I can dial 911 after I fire off a double tap once or twice, and I can always get woken up by something on four legs, fifteen or more pounds, and is man's best friend.

They must have fixed that car really quick to get it to run. Why would they lie? I would go as far as to find another car like that and hire the person for a twenty spot to pull in my driveway for a minute so I can see if the headlights look the same as the ones I seen the night of the robbery. What good that would do I dont know but it would help reaffirm your suspicion or eliminate the suspect. But then again that is why we have gut feelings isnt it. Maybe the car actually was a driver that did a u-turn. Did the car head towards the house down on the right when you seen it leave? How long was it till you got home then went to get the guns out? If it was only a few minutes then you were targeted.

Like you said someone almost had to have known the guns were there. Think of anyone that would be able to see the back where the truck is parked.

Indiandave: No the leo didnt get into any trouble as a dog is considered property. All they have to do is say they felt threatened. Maybe an office visit with the boss who knows right. I am just as pissed as the day it happened and am continuing with legal action. I have security cameras. The cop never knocked on the front door when he was looking for witnesses. I have beware of dog and no trespassing signs clearly posted when this happened. If anyone wants to see it not much there go to youtube kalamazo public safety officer shoots dog I am planning on adding a better video with more footage same title . What you see there is what I could get of the tape before the cops took it with a search warrent. Long story. Dont want to be a thread stealer so....

Get yourself a dog one that can be trained to be a good watch dog. Dont get the little yappers a nice german sheppard mix breed. Not only are they excellent alarm, deterent systems, they occupy the bg and make them think about what they are doing.

BULLSI - "It was very ballsy of them to open my gate, walk in the back to my truck, take the rifles, walk back out to the front, close the gate, and leave."

First, sorry you lost your firearms to those thugs. I also have to guess it was someone who knew you or knew what you kept at your home.

Secondly, IF he/they opened the gate (chain link type??) without using gloves, etc., the police might have been able to pull some fingerprints from the gate. Or.... your truck.

Did the police take 'prints???

L.W.

BULLSI, the white square made me laugh out loud!

Seems like if the first thing a cop reaches for is his gun when confronted with a charging dog, he should be in a different line of work.

BULLSI I am sorry your puppy got hurt. I hope he is ok. I agree about dogs looking out for all us. I have 4 dogs they are all old dogs but they would give thier life to protect me and my son.

BTW your dog is cute.

LopezEL Your puppies are cute and I am sorry about the loss of your guns. I also have a Ruger 10/22. You have excellent taste.

According to the report you file with insurance, and with the police, your vehicle was locked.

Otherwise insurance may not cover your loss, and police may view you as negligently failing to secure firearms.

Same thing happened to my bro-in-laws dad. Last summer he was watching tv and had his kitchen door open with storm door closed. His 2 dogs in the back yard started barking and raising Caine. Finally he went to the kitchen door and yelled at the dogs to be quiet. They quieted down for a few minutes but started barking again. He went back to the kitchen door and told the dogs to be quiet. He said he didn't hear any thing else from them all night. Next day he went to his garden shed to get his brand new roto-tiller. Quess what? It was gone along with his new John Deere mower, his string trimmer, his chainsaw, toolbox, and leaf blower. None of it was ever recovered.
