Saw some Monarch ammo at Academy Sports & Outdoors. It was 7.62x39 and priced at $5.69 a box ( 20 rounds ). Description on box indicated steel case and FMJ bullet but didn't mention whether or not it was corrosive. What experience have any of you guys had with it and what can you tell me about it?

It is decent ammo-- I think it is Academy has them marked as Monarch, but the are Barnaul or something. I shoot them in my WASR (just about all I can find here) and have had zero issues-- it is non corrosive BTW..

Good stuff. Barnaul's better than Wolf (what isn't?) The price is right and they had it all through the ammo crunch of '09

Monarch steel case is Barnaul. Monarch brass case is Prvi Partison.

Barnaul is good ammo made in Russia. Prvi is good ammo made in Serbia.

My Sigma doesn't like them. Jams about every third or fourth round. Any other ammo I've ever tried works just fine, including handloads. May just be my gun.

FWIW, I have used/use Monarch Brass .38spl, .357Mag, .45ACP, 9mm, and Monarch Steel 9mm-- all seem to work fine in my guns as range ammo..zero issues...

For 7.62 it was good. Now the 9mm stuff, for some reason, always have one or two FTF in a box of 50. Just something I've become accustomed to since it is so cheap

ditto's to all the above, monarch brass is fine, Prvi Partisan has been making quality ammo for about 100 yrs or more now...

I've used Monarch in 223, 38spl, 357mag and 45acp. It's all been good reliable stuff, if not exciting. Comparable to Winchester White Box, I'd say.

Right, OP asked about Monarch in general; bears repeating that while steel-cased stuff stuff is Barnaul, the brass cased is Prvi Partizan from Serbia. Some of the cleanest and best performing stuff I've used for .45, though some of the rifle calibers burn pretty dirty.

Prvi Partizan seems to command a premium even on the 'surplus' sites as well.
