Hi guys and gals,

There's a lack of pics of the Ruger New Vaquero Montado on the web so I figured I'd post mine. I got lucky and checked the Davidson's website when they had 2 .45cals in stock. I picked it up from my FFL yesterday. It's a very good looking gun. The grip is not as roomy as my Old Vaq but it's also a more all around trim pistol. The spur seems to be in a more intuitive position for repeated one hand firing. The loading gate action is very gritty because of casting marks, I'm sure that will smooth through use.

Mine is a later model so it doesn't have the grooved front strap, removing it was apparently a Ruger concession to CASS shooting or something. I don't keep up with that really. As I found someone stating on another forum the ejector housing along the barrel is a little more of a dull finish than the barrel and gun, although it is ferrous not aluminum even though it looks like it. I can't say much more about it without a trip to the range.

Oh and the 2 rounds in the first pic are not factory ammo if someones trying to figure out what brand of ammo, they're hand loaded Speer flying ashtrays.

Sorry for the quality...phone pics

Nice piece and I'm sure you will enjoy shooting it. I love the feel of the new mid-frame Rugers.

Thanks guys, I like the short barreled single actions myself. I went through a long barrel phase that got me the 7.5" Old Vaq in .45. They both have great attributes.

Gorgeous, does anyone who shoots CASS know why they wouldn't approve of a grooved front strip?

Sorry strap

I take it you meen on the grip frontstrap ??

If so , they {SASS} didn't want the "game" turning into IPSC etc. where high dollar guns rule --- they failed IMHO --- otherwise people would be adding checkering or strippleing to the frontstrap of their revolvers.

BTW --- I shoot a "short-stroked" rifle in SASS and know of two people who use "short stroked" Ruger revolvers.

I have one in .357 that I picked up for a song on Gunbroker of all places. I love the way it handles, but it is going off to the 'smith soon to grow up into a .44 special. Same barrel length, with a few added extras to personalize it.

That will be a cool conversion Otony, it should lighten it up a little as well. Roger, great family photo, where did you find the stag grips on the birdie? I've been thinking about grashorns.

The first run of Montados was aimed at the mounted cowboy shooting market; their rules allow the grooves in the front strap. (I think SASS rules changed recently; not sure if those are OK now.) The very name, Montado, refers to one that is mounted, as on a horse. I got one from that first run; it is a really nice sixgun, from a local dealer affiliated with Davidson's. :)

I especially like the hammer spur. Basically, it is a Super Blackhawk hammer, but checkered differently. My left hand works OK with any single-action hammer spur, but my less-dextrous right thumb works MUCH better with the Montado and SBH spurs.
