I plan on contacting Kel-Tec to see if i can get this repaired, but I thought I would inform other p-11 owners of my problem and post updates on how Kel-Tec handles the issue.

I noticed a crack in the frame of my P-11 this morning when I cleaned the pistol. It is forward of the trigger guard on the left side of the frame. I did not think this part of the frame took that much stress but I guess it does.

The pistol has had about 7000 (best guess) factory rounds through it so far. I have been working up a load for it for the past week. The load I am working up is a light load so it had nothing to do with the crack. In fact the point of me working up these loads is to get away with as light of recoil as I can for practice. For those that know reloading, the load I am loading is 4gr bullseye over a 115gr FMJ with CCI SPP (probably around 900 to 1000 fps). It was actually to light of a load and did not cycle the slide and I was going to move up to 4.1g for the next loads.

It will probably be monday before I can get around to calling them as it looks like I am going to have a busy weekend.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I would ask for the parts. As of late, Kel-Tec as been around 8-10 weeks for repair work; you would probably get what you need in a few days from them free of charge. YMMV

Am I wrong in thinking that whole front piece could snap off and the gun would function just fine?
(assuming nothing exterior to the gun interferes with the recoil spring during firing)

"No big deal"?
I prefer my guns to not have any kind of defects in them.
Just reinforces IMO staying away from keltec's.

It's pretty easy to change out, lots of instruction available on how to do it, or send it back and KT will fix it, every time I called, I had the part in a week or less.

Certainly not the first gun to develop a crack, and it's not in a load bearing or otherwise critical place anyway. The dust cover could break completely off, and the gun will still function fine.

These guns hold up remarkably, considering the miniscule dimensions and mass that contain the power of the cartridges they chamber. I actually have yet to see or hear of a true KaBoom in a Kel-Tec.

But the KT haters have always latched onto any and every imaginable reason to say "reinforces my decision not to buy them", so replies like that one comes as no surprise.

Just out of curiousity, what firearms manufacturer (or any manufacturer of any product for that matter) do you know of that won't or can't ever develop defects, damage, breakage, wear, etc?

Yeah ... no big deal.
A $34 cosmetic part that will probably be free from the company no questions asked would be no big deal.
That could even be damage from carry or an impact and have nothing to do with round count (guessing here, not accusing clone of abuse/neglect)

group17, it isn't a safe queen, it is a budget carry pistol at a pretty damn low price point, the occasional need for TLC shouldn't be a surprise.

Seeing as Kel-Tec's have a life of "6000 rds, or more", it doesn't surprise me.
My P11 was new in 1996 an has eaten over 11,000 rounds and it's still going fine. I called Kel Tec once wondering if I should change the recoil spring, told him the round count and it's pretty accurate on this gun as I know how much I used to shoot it when I was shooting IDPA with another 9. For several years I'd put a 50 rounds through it and 50 to 100 rounds through my Ruger one range trip a week. He told me, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

That particular crack could be fixed with super glue, but I'd just get Kel Tec to send me the part. You must have banged it against something or maybe dropped it? That part has no load on it, hard to figure how it would crack without some mistreatment.

BTW, the gun has a lifetime warranty, too.

It's a Keltec, made to fail...stop making excuses for this junk, super glue?

I'm 0-2 with P11's, never will I buy a Keltec again...

I wonder what they recommend for people who want a small carry 9. I love my PM9 but I know a lot of people who aren't on a Kahr budget and are glad that the PF9 and P11's are on the market. You can't have too many carry options and one company making two sub$ 300 sub-compact 9mm's is only a good thing.

I wonder what caused it to crack there that area is not under any pressure or anything. Just a dust cover. Keep us updated on what KT has to say about it or why it happened.

Really? Its a piece of plastic that is nothing more than the dustcover. If it broke on my HK USPc, I would be really ticked, and, they would have to replace the whole frame as its part of the frame.

On a Kel-tec, its pretty much like a cracked grip. Its not a part that would make the gun stop working nor is it part of the actual frame. I can complain about a few Kel Tec issues I have had, but, after 6000 or so rounds, a user replaceable part develops a crack and, I'm pretty sure its a free replacement? Really can't complain a a whole lot. Make them send you a new one.

I'd just call Kel Tec & get a new grip sent out. It would be a lot more time & hassle to send it in. Not worth it in my opinion.
