Stack-on gun cabinet advice needed

I own several. no problems at all, although mine have hard plastic barrel rests. If you are really concerned I would purchase some automotive type padded loom clamps and install them bent open. Techtran makes good ones, very inexpensive. Can't recall the Part numbers off the top of my head. I would probably get 1" padded loom clamps and bend them in half. If your rifles can't fit 2 to 1 per clamp just use 1 per, bent double. they are less than a dollar a piece. Try any heavy duty parts house; ie... anyone that sells Kenworth or Freightliner parts should stock Techtran. I was going to use them to sort some bigger rifles to keep them from rubbing eachother. Soon as you pick one up you will get the idea. I am assuming you have no problem shooting some self tappers through your cabinet in order to customize it.

Another option would be to put all your rifles in Gun Socks before you place them in the cabinet.

I would second postalnut's suggestion about using Gun Socks to protect your long guns. I also store my handguns (wrapped in silicone cloth), in gun rugs in the safe. This method has worked extremely well at protecting my guns for many years.

...also a strong believer in silicone treated gun socks.

No issues here, but I keep the area air conditioned and I check all my guns frequently.

I've never seen a Stackon with foam rests but I would think as long as you keep the air inside the cabinet dry, you should have no problem with rust. Use silicone socks as suggested above or put dessicant packets in the cabinet. I like the ones with the indicator that turns a different color when they need to be renewed.

My Stack-On came with the hard plastic barrel rests, but has the foam padding on the walls and bottom. I have not had any rusting or corrosion on any rifles or hand guns, from contact with the foam, and several rifles have steel butt plates that rest against that foam at the bottom of the locker.

I purchased a GunSaver dehumidifier, it mounts to the bottom at the back of the locker and has a six foot cord with a removable plug, took me less than 30 minutes, you just drill a 1/4" hole to run the cord through, it comes with stand off mounting brackets and has a lifetime warranty, form the Gunslick people.

It raises the temp in a closed locker just a few degrees from the ambeint room temp and stops any condensation, draws very little amperage and cost under 30 bucks. You can go a little better grade with their GoldenRod, but the GunSaver has worked for me now going on 5 years. You can find them at Midway USA and sometimes they run the Gunsaver on special

Besides the gun socks, try storing your guns barrels down instead of up - any oil in the action won't creep into the wood and your barrels won't be in contact with the foam

I know that on one of the safes my family had, they used to put small squares of non-acidic paper into the slots before setting the guns in the slots.

Not sure why they always did that, but they too were foam barrel rests, so maybe they just wanted to keep the foam off the barrel for some reason

Don't forget to bolt it to the floor and/or wall.

You could call Stack On and see what they have to say. Perhaps they will send you the hard plastic rests.

Put Pig Mats on the bottom. When they get soaked, throw them away and put down some more. Although, I have to question why you would apparently put so much oil on your firearms that it runs down them onto the floor.

You don't have to put too much oil to have it migrate over time, especially if it is on a gun you shoot rarely

Id say its no prob. My carpeted gun rests soak up the oil and no big deal. For the little moisture that may be in the case I use those little silica packs that some products get sold with. I just throw those in the bottom of the case, not touching any of the gun stocks though, and have never really had rust issues. Of course I do wipe down my guns ALOT..........OCD I guess ;->
