Ive found a 15 lb pot of lead in my parents shed and was told that it was pure lead for roofing purposes. Do I need to add anything to this, tin ect. I will be loading 405 gr 45-70 bullets.

castboolits is the place to answer all your questions. Casting is a great resource, practically adds another hobby to shooting and reloading. :)

Pure Lead is very soft, and is somewhat difficult to cast good quality bullets with. Tin increases fluidity of Lead, improves fill-out in molds, and by itself hardens Lead a little. When Tin and Antimony are added to Lead, they increase Lead hardness a lot.

Ask yourself if you want your bullets hard. Many people do not for the .45-70.

Cast Bullets is an excellent reference site.

Tin will help up to 2-3% any more & there`s no gain & a wastse of $$

Lino is hard to find & easiest to get in the form of WW.

If ya can find some WWs mix 50/50 , or trade it for some more suitable alloyed lead , pure is harder than ever to come by & I`ve seen muzzle loaders trade 2/1 before.

I have some soft lead & reserve it for special projects or use it for a base line to compare the characteristics of an alloys ability to perform .
