I just bought a can of Mean Green and have been carrying it in addition to my pistol, I'm wondering if this is being overly paranoid.

It doesn't necessarily have to be pepper spray for you to chime in; those that carry a Taser, knife, or some other defensive device in addition to a gun speak up!

I always carry pepper spray, a knife, and a cell phone, but I don't carry a handgun as often as I'd like to.

Gofast, it is actually a good idea, in some places. In NC for instance it would be a good idea. I'm not familiar with the laws in MN, but I doubt you would be in trouble for using pepper spray instead of a gun.

It is probably good legal juju to say, "I thought he was a threat, but I didn't think things had escelated to the need for deadly force. So, I used my pepper spray because it seemed like the proper amount of force to stop the threat."

In NC there is a continuim of force that CCH classes are supposed to teach. That continuim goes like this, physical presence, words, soft hands, hard hands, chemical (such as mace or pepper spray), clubbing weapon, lethal force. So, it is actually easier to justify use of pepper spray than a gun or knife. Technically you should use pepper spray before hitting them with a "tactical" flashlight.

In NC if he didn't have a weapon you would have to explain why you didn't retreat. Then it would have to escelate past simple assault. It would have to be "imminent threat of serious bodily injury or death." So, you would be well served by having pepper spray in case things are in the gray area.

Just my opinion based on where I live. Things may be completely differnt in MN.

Pepper spray gives you options, which IMHO is usually a good thing. I've had to spray a dog and for me that beats shooting one. Especially if you get it in his fur so the negligent owner can later share the experience.

Is that Fox mean green ? I hear good things about Fox sprays. I use Def Tec/ Bodyguard LE10 cone. Its nasty !

I have an Ohio CHL. I carry every time and everywhere it's lawful for me to do so.

In Ohio, it's a Concealed HANDGUN License. It doesn't authorize you to carry knives or clubs.

I don't carry any sort of chemical spray. I'm not a cop. I don't want to be a cop. I don't want to "subdue" people.

If the wind ever blows my bullets back in my face, I'll be too busy dealing with the flash and radiation to worry about it. I can't say the same of chemical sprays.

I'm already carrying a ton of junk. I don't need one more thing that I don't have any place to carry.

Pepper spray is used as a non-lethal deterrant. If it is not sucessful, you must then draw and aim your concealed weapon.

I would prefer to use a Crimson trace laser if I feel a deterrent is needed against BG. That way, if it doesn't work I'm just a few millimeters away from self defense.

I have carried spray before, but only when CC was illegal for that particular locale.

In theory, it seems like a good idea. In practice, my pockets are already full.

Also, I'd pose this point to ponder: Do you have the skill to adopt a continuum of force strategy if you're in mortal danger? I'm not saying it's a bad idea, but that you'd better have confidence in your ability to first employ the chemical spray, then switch to handgun defense if the attack continues. It's a lot to juggle, mentally and physically.

If I were going to carry a chemical deterrent, I'd go with a Kimber PepperBlaster. My wife carries one when she runs. It seems like a much more effective approach than an aerosol.

yes, I actually just talked to the owner today, super friendly guy. He said the 5.3 stuff is actually hotter, but green dye in a defense spray really appealed to me.

he also mentioned that you should replace the keychain units annually, as they only have about 5 seconds worth of propellant in them.

Depends on the self-defense laws in your state. Here in AZ, although we have some of the best gun laws in the nation, our SD laws are real squirrelly. I can think of many situations where it would be lawful to pepper spray someone in self defense, but not to shoot them. For this reason, I am seriously considering getting some pepper spray myself.

I almost always have either OC or a knife on me (especially when working my one-night-per-week pizza delivery gig) in addition to my pistol. I admit that carrying the OC more often than I actually do would probably be a good idea; I have several units of it here.

Always. Where I live, I think it's more likely that I'll need the spray than the gun (though I always carry a firearm, of course). For pepper spray, I have Kimber's Pepperblaster II, which does not spray back into your face even if it's windy. It even has a (small) pistol grip and sights. Drawback being you only get two shots, but I'm willing to live with that. Great device for less than $50.

Here in town is a Jax store, they carry pepper spray, the size you carry in bear country. Its supposed to have 1.5 million Scoville units of heat..... suppose that's enough for BG? Maybe if he gets a good snort of this one, he'll find a day time job!

I don't carry pepper spray. If I have that much room, I'll carry 2 guns or another magazine or a couple extra speedloaders. I've been sprayed before ( in training situations) and I wouldn't trust pepper spray to stop an aggressive attacker. I'm kind of a gym rat too, so I trust my physical abilities in a fight more than pepper spray. Just my humble opinion.

In my honest opinion, if the sight of a gun isn't enough to stop them neither is mace. I'd rather have my weapon drawn and ready before I realize they're not gonna stop, than have to react and draw my weapon after it's too late.

I rather carry a cane if I think I need more than a handgun and a light. You will eat peper spray or anything else you spray. The new gun type may be better but dependent on the distance you can still get hit. I've been hit with it several times and it would stop me only momentarily. Many people can react like that so if you do spray run like heck.

How 'bout using the pepper spray to buy time, then moving away/off axis and drawing your handgun?

'Course I think even a P229 is too much to carry and am looking at mouseguns ..... Probably not gonna carry ANOTHER thing. :)

I've been looking at some of the Fox pepper spray, I don't have my concealed carry permit yet (Just moved from NY), besides the fact that it is a lot simpler than a handgun when traveling via air.

I don't think you can bring pepper spray on an airplane.

I decided the keychain unit is best for me. I clip it to my pocket, it isn't too bulky and it helps me get my keys out easier

I threw the other can I bought (1.5oz flip top) in my mom's purse.

Amen and amen. I spent a week in hospital last year with my asthma. Since then, I've had to be careful about how much garlic I breathe in when cooking, have to be extremely careful about any pepper or chili oil getting "down the wrong pipe" or else my larynx spasms shut (that is not fun, though not fatal either). Still, the last thing I need to do is put myself in an asthma attack when I need to be able to run and/or gun.

OTOH, my husband, whose company has a strict no-weapons policy, carries it because it's better than beating the BG over the head with his laptop.
