weapon vs pepper spray...

so here's a question i've been debating with myself and a couple of other people: what is best for a woman (not being sexist here) to carry for defense?

is a gun the answer? how about pepper spray?

ive heard of women carrying knives, which personally i think is a bad idea, all it takes is a bigger guy to take the knife away.

there is no substitute for all the safety rules (not walking alone and at night and what else), but you always have to discuss less-than-perfect situations.

for my two cents, id vote pepper spray. but im sure someone will ream me on why not.

Well, as long as you don't let them pesky wimminfolk drive or leave the kitchen or wear shoes, I think you should be fine limiting them to pepper-spray. Give them guns and next they'll want to vote, have jobs, and speak in the presence of other men.

Most people, regardless of gender, aren't prepared to use a knife defensively.

While some guns may be hard for a woman to physically operate, there are plenty that aren't. What is your justification for pepper spray over a gun? Mindset? Physical ability? Ability to be trained?

whoa buddy, once again, women just as capable as men. im just thinking practically, and practically more situations (i think) call for something less deadly than a firearm.

the discussion group i was in wasnt thinking gang fight, more like simple robbery or assault. not life/death situations, where a .50 cal would be best.

LET ME STATE AGAIN : THIS IS NOT A SEXIST POST, ME AND MY FRIENDS HAD OUR WIVES IN MIND!!! not trying to belittle any gender. clearly firearms help level the playing field of physical strength, but thats not all there is to it. no problems with women carrying firearms, might be the best idea out there, thats why the post was made.

...i thought i might get a post like that, didnt think itd be the first one.

so to get back on topic, i think pepper spray is best for the severity of the majority of crimes committed, and legally is a lot more stable an area. is it really the best option? you tell me.

The difference is OC is not a deadly weapon, and if she needs deadly force and only has OC (or it doesn't work) she's in deep you-know-what.

The answer is: whatever she wants to carry. There is no best for everyone, male or female. Look at the threads where guys are picking guns for their girlfriends/wife (or both maybe!) - it's ridiculous. SHE has to pick what fits her and what she's comfortable with.

My vote is .45acp if she can handle it. If not, 9mm. Then maybe OC.

There are dozens of posts here discussing the use of pepperspray as an alternative and/or in addition to a firearm. However, yours specifically said "for a woman."

However, the crux of your question seemed to be what was best for a woman. Why would you bring that up unless you thought there was a substantial difference between the needs of men and women?
