On Monday morning while heading for work I realized I had forgotten my belt knife. I had another pocket knife in my pants pocket but its not my favorite blade. So being who I am I turned the truck around and went home to get it.

I arrived at work a few minutes later than planned but oh well. The morning started out pretty well and was somewhat productive. I moved to one of the projects on my list replacing a broken torsion spring on a overhead garage door. I got the door open and my tools and myself inside. The garage area had no side door so the only way in or out was the garage door. The left hand spring had broken and the only way to remove it is to release the tension on the RH spring. I have done this dozens of times without incident until now.

While trying to release spring tension which can be 150#'s or more the spring broke. My right hand being exactly where it should not of been. The spring hook entered through my wrist at the base of the palm. The spring came out midway through the palm. So I have about 1 3/4" of flesh in the spring and 150-160# of pressure wrapping me up. The force drug my forearm across a sheetmetal bracket leaving a pretty nasty wound. Since I was working on a seven foot door I was just reaching up to work on it. My ladder sitting 8 feet beyond my reach. After fighting like mad to get free for 5 or 6 minutes I had lost a fair amount of blood. Getting woosey and starting to panick. I tried to tear the bound flesh but the skin on my old hands is tough as leather.

Finally I got my body turned and got my knife in my left hand. Pulling back against the spring as hard as I could. I gave one quick hard pull of my blade against my hand. Well it worked and I fell against the floor. I recovered my cell phone and called my partner who was working a couple hundred yards away. I was not strong enough to raise the garage door by myself so thankfully he had not left for coffee.

After 11 hours in the ER and surgery I was on my way home. My pride hurt and 120 stitches the richer. A little nerve and muscle damage but the tendons and veins remained intact. although you could see them as well as bone exposed in the forearm and palm. Thanks to the fact that I had that knife I am okay. Won't be doing any bowhunting for a while but okay.

Without my knife the only way to get into help me was to come through a wall or the roof. Opening the door would of only hurt me worse. So carring a good knife while making a great package opener/steak knife it could in fact save your hide one day.

I should recover just fine. The only draw back to being self employed is no sick leave. I would venture a guess that it will be a couple weeks before I am back at it. Probably a month before I can do alot of things effectively. May have to tap into my hunting trip fund but it could have been so much worse.

On a bright note I am left handed.

Sharp Knife

Good job having the necessary tool handy.

I'm a real fan of truly sharp knives. I've [post=5668867]mentioned before[/post] that
I am occasionally asked why I carry this knife or that, and why I "obsess" about keeping them sharp. My standard answer is that "you just never know when you might have to cut off your own arm." Google Aron Ralston for insight into that line of thinking.

Happily, you didn't have to amputate.

Excellent that you kept your head. Glad you're gonna be okay.

Well done.

Mindset and toolset worked just fine obviously.

Congrats. And best wishes for a speedy healing.

OK. I guess eating yogert and looking at gory pics isn't for me. That's a pretty knarly wound. Hope you have a fast recovery and don't go stir crazy.

Google Aron Ralston for insight into that line of thinking.

I read Aron's book a few years ago. Shortly after his accident I had a low opinion of him and all of the hype. I must say after reading his book I came to respect the heck out of him. My 5 minute ordeal was scarey enough I could not imagine 3 or 4 days.

Whew! Glad you are OK! Those springs are no joke. At the city I used to work for, one of the summer-temporary DPS college kids was working on a garage door at the pound. The spring flew loose and the poor kid lost an eye. I'm glad your injury, as bad as it was, was not that bad.

Only thing manlier would have been to eat the severed flesh
...and chased it with a Bourbon.

Seriously though, kudos to you for keeping your head and doing what you had to. Just looking at the picture gives me the willies.

Ouch! A good reminder of why we carry knives. You just never know.

Heal fast, friend. Thanks for sharing your story. :)

a split second of inattentiveness or just bad luck can change ones life...
under pressure you kept your head and now you get to keep the rest of yourself.

hoping for you a speedy and complete recovery and that this should be the worst of your troubles for evermore.

Thank you to all for your wished for a speedy recovery.

Who knows perhaps this is a message to slow down a bit and focus on whats in front of me. I have a great wife and 4 amazing kids that I need to get home safely to. Making foolish actions while thinking about everything else makes you slow down faster than expected.

I have been sitting around thinking about the title to my little thread. Wondering if I am being a little too dramatic with my choice of words. Considering I could tell you my heart rate by watching the exposed artery in my arm pulsate and that my blood oxygen level was only 84% on room air. I guess that means I lost a fair amount of the warm wet and sticky stuff that carries the oxygen to your body. Its certainly the closest I have ever been to being in real deep poo.

Well here is what it looks like today. Add a couple bolts out of the wrist and Dr. Frankenstein would be proud. I am thinking my 2 weeks max off work may have been overly optimistic.

Wow! I thought the pics I posted when I had a table saw accident were nasty! Even the story had me cringing.

Glad you'll be OK!

oh man, that is a rough way to start the day. I have done a good deal of construction/carpentry, and appreciate others that do too. I hope it heals quickly. and you come back 100%.

FWIW
I keep a spare knife clipped on the visor of my vehicles. Handy if you happen to forget your knife, easier to grab from the visor than from a pocket when seated.

Wow! Glad your as ok as can be. Good thing you had your knife and cell phone with you. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
