Welcome to the shiny, new Centerfire Match! This match is open to any centerfire rifle. This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, heavy rifles (over 10lbs), high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used).
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles). Rests/sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class, but shooting sticks (either the crossed or walking stick variety) are allowed. Use of a sling is encouraged. Shoots may be taken from any position.

100 Yd. Target: See attachment below. Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper (for best results print from Windows Photo Viewer with "fit picture to frame" deselected). The objective is simple...just break the line to earn the indicated point value (1-32; indicated beneath each target). Shoot at as many or few as you like, but pick your shots carefully because if you miss one and you are disqualified. You can earn a maximum of a whopping 528pts!

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo (or load, if you care to divulge your secret recipe), Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before July 32nd. ;)

now that looks like some challenging fun

well done. whenever my rifle gets back, we'll play

Well at least we have a long time before double leap year comes around. That's when we get an extra day in July, right?
Yeah, we need to submit targets before the 32nd. rolls around...long before. ;)

FWIW, that is somewhat of my "signature" on the match (started on the "April Fools Match" IIRC, some folks didn't get it so I added the winkin' smiley)...that way you'll know if I get abducted and replaced by an alien. :p

Sure thing. Any position is fine for either classification, but no rest/bags/bipod for sporting (shooting sticks or a rested elbow are permitted).

:)

You miss, your done?? Try again? This ones gonna burn some ammo, and tempers
That's the idea...gotta know your limits and quit while you're ahead. As to burning up ammo, you only need 32rnds. :D

So, you can use any average deer rifle with a 3-9X scope in both divisions.
Using a shooting bench would put you in target class.
And if your shooting that same rifle unsupported, or with shooting sticks,
then it would be sporting class.
Is that correct?

You got it.

:)

By popular demand (in the rimfire match utilizing the same target), the following attachment is a high(er)-contrast version of the same target. Feel free to sub this one out if you like...or save the ink and use the original. The only modification is the addition of a charcoal filler in the white areas, so no advantage is given to either one.

:)

I think that target will be easier to see with low magnification.

I took the Weatherby Vanguard 7mm Rem. Mag. to the Range this afternoon..
The #11 target looked like about 1", so I started on that and was working my way backward, when it started to rain.

Do you have to shoot consecutive hits from the #1 target or can you just
add up any hits that you happen to have?
If this counts, I guess it's a 30. I think I caught enough of that 10 to count it?
(I'll probably take this target back to the range next time I go, and try to fill in the blanks back to #1)

Those original targets are hard to see with a 9X scope at 100 yards but you can sort of guestimate
where to aim. :D
I was shooting reloads, (this rifle shoots some factory stuff okay, but it's pricey)
62.5 gr, H4831 behind Nosler 150 gr. Bal. Tips.
100 yards, using the shooting bench
3-9X Redfield scope.

It is designed to be shot from big to small, so that you will stop when you start to get edge hits and/or loose confidence (or just plain miss), but that isn't a prerequisite. You can start small and work your way up, big and work your way down, or [like yourself] anywhere in between.

In other words, yours counts and it's pretty clear to me that you have good hits. Now you just need to take it back out and purdy it up a bit by poking a few more holes.

Thanks for getting us started, Caddisflied!

:)

Okay, thanks Maverick.
I might just start over with one of those modified targets.
I think it would be easier to see the individual circles.

I think that might be a good decision, particularly if printing in monochrome. Good luck with rnd. 2.

:)

I tried that revised target the other day (in monochrome) and it was much easier to see.
Unfortunately, I didn't even get through the first row.
This is no target rifle and I don't expect to score real well with it,
but it's good to have an excuse to take it off the rack and give it a work-out!
Most years, this rifle just collects dust until fall (deer hunting season).

I'm wondering if there should be a 'special' third shooting class for those of us who are ballistically challenged.
Maybe something that could be printed on 36" blueprint paper? :p

Great. As far as adding a third class; we'll see how things go. Given current results I'm not so sure that they'll even be a next time around. :uhoh:

Looks like fun!

I'm hoping to head to the range on Sunday to sight in my girlfriends .223 ;)

I know my gun can't get to the last row!

Perhaps you are right. If things pick up I'll try to make next months a bit less ammunition consuming (but still original).

:)

Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda

Ok, so this won't be an official entry...

But here is my zero point DQ (but woulda been 66, had I stopped when I knew I should have, and not been greedy.) That miss was clearly me, and I blew it. I knew I did too, before the sights came back down.

I think I'm going to go shoot again yet this week, and if I do, I think I'll start higher, and shoot my way to the lower point targets. I'll print off some more targets too.

This was pretty fun I thought. A bit more pressure than most of the CF/RF matches, just because one blown shot and you're done.

I was shooting my RRA Varmint EOP topped with a Bushnel 4200. 55grain V-max, with (I think - I may be mistaken on charge weight) 24.2 grains of 8208.

I'll shoot this target over the weekend, can almost guarantee it will be a big fat zero. ;) I know my limits; it's always the shot before that last one haha.

EDIT: Didn't see there was a rimfire match for this, will definitely do that too.
