October Centerfire Match:

Keep it in the match. I'm not dropping out just havent been able to get to the range for weeks
If you want to even things up shoot outside in the rain and 25mph winds with the rest of us :)

Heck, we're having 40-50 mile an hour winds right now and it's been over 30 all day. I would have gladly shot the match outdoors, but the range my friend and I built on his property happens to be occupied by a small herd of horses they are boarding for a couple that had to go to Japan for a couple months on company business.

Closest other range is about 65 miles away and they only have 85 yards available on the rifle range. Besides, they are usually busy doing LEO training except on weekends and then they are busy with the domestic shooters. Getting a lane is iffy unless you are there when they open at 9 a.m. Not worth it so shoot 85 yards - LOL

Jim

Yeah, I can't understand a rifle range not having at least 100yd. lanes available...85 yards is just too short for practical shooting with a centerfire rifle.

:)

howz it going maverick. longtime no see. im pondering getting some good ammo and trying out my new shooting bench in the open class with my old pea shooter out by the tank (which is completely dry now).
:D

Doing well, and keeping busy, how about yourself, FB? Speaking of which, I have a question for ya...PM inbound shortly.

:)

gottit.

lol, i actually meant to post that about my pea shooter in the rimfire thread. (maybe i should shoot both):D

It's too heavy to shoot offhand or in one of the classic positions.
Never. Weight is your friend. My Service Rifle was light at 15lbs. Some of the guys have them set up at 25-30lbs. A heavy gun offhand moves less when the wind starts blowing.

I know, but at my age (almost 70) I don't have the upper body & shoulder strength to do that, even with a sling. Believe me, I've tried. 20 years in the Army and shooting in local matches (never got a chance at Camp Perry) with an M14 taught me a lot of bad (good) habits and showed me my physical limitations even before I got older than dirt

I went out last night and decided that even though there was no way I was going to best the "bar" I was still going to give it my best.
Magnified/Unlimited
Rem 700 in 223
50gr Vmaxs over varget
Nikko stirling 4-16x44 nighteater
wind dead calm
temp mid-low 40's
shot prone with bipod front and squeeze bag rear
score 76
Target order C-D-B-A (I know weird order)
I'd love to blame the load or wind or gun for the first three targets, but it goes to show how much the of a difference the person behind the gun makes. my hat goes off to KSCCHTrainer for an excellent target and score, no matter how good the gun the shooter can still ruin the group.

jperkins, welcome to the match! You may not have best the bar, but the bar was set high, and you still did very well. BTW, your scoring looks perfectly fine to me.

:)

Nice target jp!

Deer season starts in a few weeks so I tweaked one of my old hunting loads and used this months target to sight in the 7Mag.
It was hitting so well will this load I decided to save the rest of this batch for hunting. That's why I didn't finish the target.
Once I got it sighted in for this load, I shot one of my best groups ever with this rifle ( I think it's under 5/8" center to center).
I think shooting in the Rimfire Match all summer has helped my shooting.
My score isn't too impressive (33) but that's okay.

That is a pretty decent group, particularly with a hunting rifle; feel free to finish it up with another batch of ammo.

:)

Thanks Mav, If I have a chance, I might do that.
I used the last of my 160's on this batch of ammo.
And I doubt if I can get another load to shoot as well before hunting season.
The barrel heats up quickly on that rifle and it's never been easy to get small groups with it.

Target/Unlimited entry

OK, I finally managed to get out and shoot. For one reason or another I wasn't able to get out earlier. Almost didn't go today because of wind (gusty to about 25mph). At least the wind was more or less at my back (between 7 and 5 really), but it still wasn't ideal. Woe is me, boohoo, its a conspiracy against me and all that.

By my count, I shot an 81. While the wind didn't help matters at all, this is on me. Better riflemen could have shot far better. I know this rifle and load can shoot far better than this. This load usually is at about .8 or so, and today I only had one under an inch.

Rifle is an RRA Varmint EOP, shooting handloads (55g V-max, over 24.5g 8208).

Looks like I have some work to do to get in the lead!

Still pretty good shooting Tim.

Gonna try and get back to the indoor range today and maybe finish breaking in my 10FLCP-K .308. Got another 20 rounds to go and then I'll switch from the 150FMJ Remington to some PRVI 168 grain match ammo and re-zero it. Regardless of how it groups with the 168's I'll shoot a match target and post it. Ought to be interesting anyway as after 180 rounds it's still only grouping right at 1" at 100 yards and I know it should do better than this off the bipod.

I know some of you guys haven't had too good results with the PRVI ammo but I bought a couple hundred rounds of their .308 match stuff to try it out. At least once I get it shot up, I can load up some of my own 168 grain BTHP (168 grain Sierra Match King bullets with a load of Varget that I have had extremely good luck with in the past. It's all fun anyway and trigger time is trigger time huh?

Jim

Jim; I'd put my money on the cartridges you are using. Those light ball rounds don't have a stellar reputation for accuracy. I think you'll see a noteworthy improvement with the match and/or 168SMKs.

:)

Oh Yeah Maverick, I knew that. I was just using the cheap Remington 150 FMJ's to take the buggerburrs off the rifling. I re-zeroed the scope with the 168 PRVI match ammo this morning and fired 20 for record on the match target.

It's not completely there yet, but it has settled down a bunch from the original targets which I didn't post (because I left them on the counter at the range). No excuse, but I did drink several cups of coffee (black) before I went to the range. I know better, but I do like my coffee and I cannot hack drinking DeCaf so don't even mention it - :neener:

I was surprised the 168 grain stuff printed only slightly high from the 150 FMJ's but the groups were a quite a bit tighter. Probably should have let the barrel cool down a bit between the match targets as the first one I shot was really tight and the other three opened up a bit. Order of fire - Top left, top right, bottom left and last bottom right.

Disregard the writing on the target, I mis-scored the bottom left target. Instead of 3 5"s it should have been two 5's, one 4 and two 3's for a total of 20 instead of 22 which would make the overall score of 88 (instead of the 90 I have written on the target). I looked closer at the grease marks and the bottom is actually two almost through the same hole in the 3 ring at 6 o'clock

I have all the 150 grain stuff shot up and am 40 rounds into the 200 pack of 168 Prvi Match ammo. Once I get a hundred rounds of the PRVI downrange, I'll start reloading it.

Me too. I've got 40 rounds of Remington and 40 rounds of PRVI brass in the tumbler right now and I just filled up the dispenser with Varget powder so after the brass gets clean, gonna load up 80 with my 168 grain PRVI match bullets from Grafs (saving the more expensive SMK's for later) and we'll see how they do. Gonna run the first 20 as 10 of the starting load, add +1 grain and 10 more. I'll shoot those first and see how much difference I get between them.

Gonna make up a few with Trail Boss and 185 grain gas checked cast lead bullets too just to see how close I can come to 1 hole accuracy with that. I managed it with the 8mm and the Mosin when my cardiologist had me shooting only rimfire and real light stuff, so the .308 ought to produce as well.

If you haven't delved into the esoterics of light loads (jacketed and cast both) with Hodgdon Trail Boss, you ought to play with it. Amazing stuff and it's the only smokeless powder I know of where you can basically make up your own load data and you can't blow up your gun doing it!:scrutiny:

Jim

Being more of a "the bigger, faster, heavier, the better" person myself I haven't tried Trailboss, but if I ever get around to rechambering my 1895 (currently an '06) to .35Whelen I'll have a great reason to start doing so. I should be able to mimic .357Mag. performance (with .357-.359cal. bullets, perhaps even trying some 9mm) when loaded with fluff, in a case that's perfectly adequate for taking bear, elk, moose, et cetera when loaded to spec. What's not to love? :D

Heres my poor attempt at the Unlimited/Target Rifles centerfire match. When you havent been to the range for weeks it certainly shows. The rifle is capable of shooting much better, I can't put the blame there
Hopefully I will be able to make it back to the range for another attempt
I'll let somone score this as I'm not sure how its done

Armalite AR15 Match barrel ,Simmons scope 16 power

Orlando,

After several explanations by Maverick, I think I've got it. Anything inside the bull not touching or cutting the circle line (disregard the cross lines they don't matter) is a 5 Anything touching or cutting the bullseye circle line is a 4. Next rings out = 3, 2 and 1. Cutting those lines the higher score is counted.

Yours looks like A=18, B=19, C=22 and D=20 for a total of 79, but I can't tell completely on target D. Depending on the left most 2 holes, the one in the bull may be a 5 and the one in the 3 ring may be cutting the line for a 4. If that IS the case, then D=22 and the total would be 81.

Question - what's the rifling twist on the Armalite? I've been told my 1 in 9 is still too fast to stabilize the 75-77 grain bullets and I shouldn't use anything heavier than a 65. I don't want to load up any 75 or 77 grain SMK's until I know for sure as I don't want to waste them.

Jim

Thanks Jim
The hole in the bullseye is touching the ring, the hole in the 3 ring is not touching the ring
Mine is 1:8 in theory your twist probably wouldnt work but it may be worth trying afew 75 gr and see.
At these ranges that heavy a bullet isnt needed anyway, its just what I had on hand
