I am in the market for a slug gun for my annual hunting trip to Indiana. I live in Alabama and use a .270 rifle for deer hunting, but it is not allowed up there. What is the best choice? Bolt action or pump? and also what would you prefer; Remington 870, Mossberg 500 Slugster, or H&R? Thanks for any help you can give me.

mossberg 500 cantilever rifled barrel, 2x7 variable scope. The 2 3/4" sabots work well. Get a combo, 2 barrel package, if available.

Bolt action rifled barrel shotguns can be very accurate. Pump actions can do a very good job as well so it really depends on your planned use of the weapon. If the purpose of this is strictly for deer hunting, I'd got with a bolt action. If this is to be a multi-purpose shotgun (deer, birds, clays, etc) I'd go with a pump.

Thanks guys. I think i will go with a bolt action. I will be strictly using it for deer hunting. I also would probably need to buy a varity of different slugs to try and find the best one for the gun i purchace right?

Right. Shotguns vary as to what slug works best for accuracy. On deer sized game, there's no ineffective slugs, so test some and go with the most accurate.

Slugs 101 up in the floaters may help.....

Thanks Dave. I am just getting my first slug gun and i want the best info out there to help me out. I used a muzzle loader the past couple of years and i messed up a 140 class buck due to the smoke hoovering out in front of me keeping me blinded. He jumped a fence just as i shot and the bullet cut his stomach open because all i could find was white hair and a few beans. Did not know what direction he went becase of not being able to see. I do not want that to happen again. A bolt action or pump will give me more shots if a situation like that occurs again.

Can't you still use a pistol caliber rifle in Indiana? A lever gun in .44 Mag would probably be a better choice.

Get a shotgun and load it with slugs.
Pump-action .76-or-so caliber rifle.

If you are serious about a deer hunting only shotgun, take a look at the Savage 212, 220, or Browning A-Bolt shotgun. They are basically a rifle chamberd for shotshells.

Pistol caliber rifles are legal. What is the range on them? The reason i was interested in the slug gun is because of the awesome knock down power they deliver. One other thing i need some help on is the length of the barrel. I have looked at several from 20" to 24". Does the longer barrels have more accuracy? Also to get more spin on the slug, i would need a 1 to 24 or 1 to 28 twist right?

The 44 Mag would be good for shotgun distances. Granted, I like my shotguns; but if my state allowed pistol caliber rifles; I would drop the shotgun, and go with a levergun in a heartbeat. Better accuracy, handling, lighter, and much less recoil.

+1 for the Savage bolt shotgun. More accurate than many rifles. My FIL's will put three rounds touching at 75 yards. Not a beautiful work of art, but it is an excellent deer killer.

Here in MI, we have to use a shotgun in the lower portion of the state. I prefer a muzzloader, but if it has to be shotgun I'd take a bolt. If pistol caliber rifles were legal in the the shotgun zone I'd have a 44 with leverevolution. A shotgun has the same range, but a follow up shot would be much quicker with a lever due to recoil and such, and I personally think a 44 would be more accurate at long ranges.
