I am looking into getting a shotgun with a rifled barrel for deer hunting. I want something with iron sights. I don't know which would be better a autoloader or a pump action. Looking at Remington 870 or a mossberg 500 and maybe a mossberg 930. My budget is $600 or less im on a tight budget. let me know what you think would be best action wise and brand/model wise. Thanks.

Either will work fine, personally I like semi's, I'm old so I'm a lot faster on follow up shots. And the recoil on a gas gun is much lighter for me.

I use a 930 series in 3 gun and they are very reliable.

You should only need one shot to kill a deer! :D

So a cheaper pump will do just fine.
Albeit kick a little harder then a gas-operated semi-auto.

But once you get it sighted in with your ammo of choice, recoil is not a consideration.

You will never feel it when you kill the deer with one shot.

And you will be better served spending the money you save on more practice ammo.
And Excederan.

I will (and do) take an 870 over an auto. Heck, this last season, I ended up taking it more than my bolt guns.

Anything from a single shot to a semi-auto will work. Deer hunting should be one shot, one kill. What else are you going to do with this gun?

It will be only be used to hunt deer. I have a beretta for trap and an 870 pheasant hunting. I knew it might seem cheaper to buy a slug barrel for the 870 but the only ones I can get in my neck of the woods are ones that need scopes. By the time I buy the barrel and scope it I could have had a 870 or mossberg with rifle sights.

all depends on what state regs say.pumps may be able to carry more shells than semi autos.pumps require less maintenance than semi.pumps are easier to unfreeze in cold weather.extra barrels are cheaper on pumps.
rifled barrels shoot slugs more accurately than buck.barrels with screw in chokes are better.,because chokes are cheaper than extra barrels.clean and properly lube choke threads

You can buy a slug bbl online. It's perfectly legal to have them shipped.

Ya I could do that but I need an excuse to get another gun, can't have to many guns.

If I was going to buy a dedicated slug gun for deer hunting it would be a H&R Tracker II. They sell for about $250.

If I had to choose between a pump and a semi-auto I would go with the semi. Deer hunting is all about stealth and the forearm on a pump is loose and rattles. Not to mention you already have a pump, why not get something different.

For a dedicated slug gun in your budget, I would take a hard look at the Savage 212 and 220. It is basically a precision bolt action rifle chambered in 12 or 20ga, complete with accutrigger.

I've used both over the years. Pumps more often, but I can't say I like one better than I did the other. My pump gun, an old Sears/Mossberg 500, would handle 3" Magnum, so I used that more. I never used slugs, we were buckshot only, but either action would have worked just as well with slugs as buck.

Pick the one you like best, can afford best, and it will work fine.

I have never one time saw a situation where a fast follow up shot has been necessary for deer hunting. I hunted for 10 years with a single shot .280 and never one time felt handicapped.

I've had to finish one off, but it was spine shot and not going anywhere.
If you don't hit it when it is standing still what makes you think you're going to hit it when its running away?

Get the pump if you're budget conscious. If you are recoil sensitive you may want to go with the auto. If you're a bird hunter you may want the auto because two quick shots may be necessary then.

What I'm saying is, there are reasons to go with one over the other but follow up shots on deer shouldn't be part of the equation.

Im in Northeast Iowa were autoloaders are legal. We can only use slugs, buckshot is illegal. Most of Iowa is limited to muzzleloaders and shotguns only which is fine by me.

You don't have to buy it locally. Call and order the 870 20" Fully rifled Rifled sight barrel from Remington. Call 800-243-9700 and follow the prompts to parts and order part number F242545.

I would get the Mossberg 930. Semi auto's kick a lot less. I use both a pump and semi auto.
For drives a Semi is better too. The one shot guys have never been on slug gun deer drives.
When four or five deer bust out of a slough, a bolt or single won't do the job. Pumps are ok. A red dot sight is very handy if you don't want a scope.
