2012 Shortage/Hoarding Mega Thread

My local Wal-Mart is wiped out of all common ammo. Shotgun shells are all they have.

Mine had the usual ebb and flow of availability. They're running on the standard Walmart clock. If you take a snapshot in time on the 'ebb days' it looks like a shortage and everyone no doubt uses that interweb tcp/ip protocol thingie to tell everyone about it. When they just go in and buy what they want or need, it's not worthy of a message.
I hope this is what's happening but truth is, what I fear is that the combination of the web and instantaneous asynchronous anonymous communication combined with a worsening education system ('well Darla, no one can PROVE that the Mayan's are wrong, eh??!!) will further whipsaw this country.
So sad.

There either is no shortage at the Memphis Bass Pro Shop (two weeks ago), or they keep replacing ammo which sells.

I saw no sign of a shortage, but .22 bulk ammo might have been a dollar higher than a year ago.
Maybe one or two handgun calibers needed to be restocked.

Still no shortage here, Walmart had WWB 9mm for $20/100 so I picked up 10 boxes, and Academy had the Hornady Steel Match 55 gr. .223 for $20/50. Even though I usually don't shoot steel case ammo I picked up 5 boxes to try out in my various .223's.

Just ride the storm out. It'll be over in a year or so.

No way. I'm totally looking forward to another manufactured artificial threat to cause a great 2013 shortage!

I doubt there will be an ammo or component shortage. The military demand is far less than what it was last time. This is mostly a bunch of hype in my view, to get people buying. I've seen zero issues, touch wood.

only if people continue to hoard like mad... granted I have many more guns than one man could possibly need, but all of them save one or two cost $300 or less. probably time to buy a reloading press and a bunch of primers. I wonder how black powder shoots out of 7.62x39 reloads?

personally I don't understand why people are so paranoid. the guy who openly stated he is for control of dangerous "assault rifles" is one choice. the guy who is probably going to win has never made any serious overtures at gun control, not even to placate the rabid wing of his party. people project a lot onto him from all sides, but one thing I can tell you from watching him with open eyes and an open mind is that he's not is a martyr. and neither is the guy from Massachusetts who wanted to ban all "assault rifles."

so stop hoarding already so I can get some ammo now and again over the next year!

Perfectly said.

So any new word on anyone going hungry/without or whatall?

Not that I know about. I was in my local Turners last week & the ammo tables were groaning. Several specials going on.

Walmart is pretty well stocked.

I DID buy 7K of WSP primers from a private party last week. The price was too good to pass up. ;)

I don't see any evidence of a shortage, either at my LGS or WalMart. I'm able to get pretty much anything I want, either in factory ammo or components.

Prices went up at Wally World something fierce over the last two months on certain products, but that's about it.

At this time in 2008 it had already started going nuts.

Right now there is no problem getting most anything, and prices are about what they were 4 months ago.

We will not see another run like 2008. Maybe a small one, but nothing like 2008. Folks stocked up then (Ammo, components, guns), and have continued for four years. There is not a huge vacuum to fill right now.

Right now my situation when visiting Wally World or Sports Authority, etc, is basically that you can usually find ammo for whatever you want to shoot. Might not be the bullet weight or brand that you want, but if I go in and want a box of 9mm SOMETHING is available. Back in 2008 the shelves were basically clean of most stuff except for 12ga shotgun shells and .40S&W.

Personally, there's a public range down the road that provides me with a nearly unlimited supply of brass. Powder has never been hard to find when needed (maybe not the specific type I'd want, but if I want a pistol powder I can find a bottle somewhere). I've got about 10,000 primers stored up and around 3,000 bullets. Thats enough to last me at least 6 months worth of shooting.

Buddies of mine working gun shops in VA and TN aren't seeing any panic buying.

They're actually reporting a low in sales.

Walked into the local sporting good's store (NJ) and all the ammo shelves were full, guns on racks and not a soul to buy anything. Shoot, some of the ammo was even on sale 18$ WWB 100rd 9mm's, Remington "Mega-pack" 200rd .223's for 65$ and some various other sales. We're doing just fine here in the garden state.

They buying/stocking up is pretty steady but not in a panic way and the supply is keeping up with demand. We're still seeing AR's and AK's fly off the shelves and lots of ammo being bought at our little shop. The Aurora shooting caused a spike in stock piling but it was short lived.

Unless you are willing to pay up for Colt parts, AR15 parts are SCARCE.

I've been waiting for more than a month for BCM to get the barrel I want in stock. I'm at a point where I'll pay up for a Colt barrel, or get another one that might be a compromise in quality.

No shortage of ammo here in FL. Stock can be bit light at my local Wal-Mart but so is their Hot Salsa availability as this store seems to have the poorest stock / re-ordering management of any other Wally World I have been into. Everywhere else ammo is plentiful. Older and collectible guns seem to become harder to find though but this has most likely more to do with money flowing into guns due to the low interest rates and inflation fears than the November election IMO.

223/5.56 supply tightening up?

I needed to order 1000 rounds of 223 recently for a riffle class. All my first choice suppliers were back ordered. Finally found some at a not so great price:mad:

You're welcome. I thought I'd pass the link around, although I haven't bought .223 in a while, I filled up on .45 ACP and 7.62x54R recently and both times I managed to get better prices and lower shipping than AIM, Natchezss etc. thanks to their links to online sellers I had no idea even existed (!)

CTD, Natchez, Ammunition To Go, CDNN Inverstments/Target Sports, Palmetto State Armory, AIM Surplus ... usually deals to be had at one of them.
