An explanation about my video posting decision

First of all, I'm really surprised about all the people who posted asking me to continue posting video links. I wasn't expecting that...but it's nice to know so many of you like the videos.

I'm reconsidering my decision not to post. Maybe my assessment was just plain wrong. But I'd like to explain what lead to that decision.

It started on Reddit.

If you don't know Reddit, it is social media site where people post links and comment on them. And people vote up or down on the link. The more up-votes, the higher in the sight the link shows up, so more people see it.

Reddit is huge, and there are a lot of sub-reddits (as they are called), one is on guns. I have posted a lot of gun pictures there, which usually get a lot of up-votes. And I post video links, which very often get a hand full of down votes as soon as I post them. That sinks them immediately, so very few people get a chance to see them.

A couple of weeks ago that happened...six down votes right off the bat, and no comments. So I posted a comment saying, "I'll take the down votes, but I'd appreciate feedback on what is wrong with the video, so I can improve in the future."

One guy wrote me back and said the down votes had nothing to do with the video. In fact, he thought it was a very good video. He basically said I was down voted for being a poor citizen of Reddit and engaging in self-promotion.

He pointed out that Hickok45 videos are very popular on Reddit, but they aren't posted there by Hickok45 himself, rather, members of Reddit post the links for the benefit of their fellow Reddit members. But, he, and the other top users of Reddit will continue to vote me out of visibility, because they felt I was just whoring my videos on the site.

OK...that seemed a little like the school yard at junior high to me. But I decided to stop posting on Reddit.

But as I got to thinking about it, I understood how people could be annoyed by someone promoting their own stuff all the time.

I didn't mind pulling out of Rediit completely. The folks there, for the most part are pretty immature, and they resort to profanity way too much. So good riddance.

But, I didn't like the idea that people on this site might feel the same way about my posts. I like this site. I like the people here, and I don't want to be perceived as using you all. I'd rather just stop posting the videos.

So that's the back ground. As I said, I was surprised by the response to my post. So I'm re-thinking that decision now.

Thanks a lot for being an understanding bunch of folks.

Mike, this is called The High Road for a reason. Around here we don't go and cuss someone out who's posting their good videos on the board and NOT being a nuisance. From what I can tell we all like you here, you are in the asset column of this forum. You politely post your videos without acting like you are fishing for views and comments. That's what sets you apart from that one schmuck who goes and floods boards with his own off topic videos.

Honestly, I look forward to your new videos like a favorite TV show! :D

reddit is a very strange place. despite what they may think otherwise, i find they come off as very immature and cliquey.....they seem to think 'karma' is an actual tangible item.....so they for some reason seem to take that very seriously......its like a large obscure popularity contest.....its almost like you are supposed to gain 'karma' without trying to get it, i dont know, i dont understand their logic either....dont let them be an indicator of the rest of the online gun community.

now i cant speak for everyone, but i thoroughly enjoy your videos, you seem to be one of the few people who can make a firearms video and make it enjoyable and informative without making it long and boring.

on the one hand, you post good videos, generally worth watching (particularly FIRING videos of rare/antique guns)

on the other hand, posting a new thread for every single video you make does get silly

on the gripping hand, I subscribed to your channel anyway, so posting them here became redundant - and I watch about 1 in three start to finish fullscreen, the rest checked for highlights or rewound for the most interesting bits

Sounds like a place I would have absolutly no desire to go. I could understand black balling videos that were just commercials for whatever the poster is selling, but to do that to useful, informative videos just because they are posted by the creator is just... stupid.

As far as I can reason, the most appropriate videos to post would be work of your own. Posting another persons work seems like trying to get credit for work you didn't accomplish, so the concept you described as normal on Reddit seems quite odd to me. That said, I also don't see any reason for you to stop posting here. I've watched many of your videos and must say that they have added to my enjoyment of The High Road. I can't see any reason to take away a good thing.

Consider this. There are a large number of special people like me that no matter how many times I might read the instruction, I just don't get it.

But if I see it done once, I have it forever. Your videos show me and others how to do it without condescention or bluster.

I appreciate it.

I've subscribed to you on youtube and "liked" you on facebook, but I don't mind seeing a links to your videos on here or everywhere else, because they're good stuff. If they're not posted here, a lot of people would miss seeing them.
I would never base anything I do off of what I read or see on reddit, it's a foul place.

I think gunnit is just the wrong audience i reckon.

You wont get many people there that are interested in much other than ar15s, sig pistols or old mosins...

Please don't stop posting here you are a very important part of this forum.

We were around before rediquette existed. ;)

We also don't have a politics section where self-proclaimed Marxists get to tell the rest of us how the workers someday will have a worker's utopia.

We just like to talk about shooting. I'd prefer you post links to your own work to avoid copyright issues as well. None of this "if it's not on imgur I'm not clicking it nonsense" either -- embed it.

Mike keep posting, you are a great benefit, for the young especially, and those looking to get involved with the Holy Black. There are very few who can describe and portray a Makarov PM, an 1860 Army, and a 303 Enfield and keep it interesting.

Let's see...you are self promoting huh? Does that cost me anything? No. Do I learn a great deal from your work? You betcha ( Palin stole that from me). Keep on keepin on please.

Video Posting

Mike:
The only complant I have with your Videos , is that you don't post alot more of them.
Keep up the good work.
And don't pay any atention to what the A HOLE CLUB has to say.
D Rat

Mike, your videos promote the shooting sports which in turn promote the 2nd Amendment. That's considered to be a sacred mission to us folks on THR and TFL too. And just because you're an editor doesn't change the basic purpose concerning the promotion of guns and gun rights as far as anyone here is concerned.
We recognize that and just because some others in cyber space don't agree shouldn't affect the common goal of promoting your shooting videos.
You deserve a service award and not a guilt trip because of some narrow minded folks on another forum. Please keep up the great 2A promotional work and thanks for reconsidering the hasty decision. :)

I'm all for your continued posting too. I've always really enjoyed your stuff!

Never, ever, have I though anything negative about what you do here in any way. It's all part and parcel of this site the way I see it.

I say keep posting here and give up on Reddit. I'm subscribed so I'll see them anyway but it's always nice to have a conversation with the folks here about the video without having to deal with all the juvenile foolishness on YouTube.

Post em here... we like them and appreciate them. Who cares if reddittt finds them self-promoting?

There are some people who whore their videos all over the net with no other relevant information or forum involvement. You are NOT one of them. Plus, you know what you're talking about, which puts you ahead of 99% of youtubers, including me. :D

I rather liked the Makarov video
It showed up in my subscription feed, so I watched it

I think that you might want to keep a running thread in each sub-section and add more videos to it as you go.
