Thoughts on the new Five SeveN MK2?

Fixed sights? I saw only a choice of adjustable. Didn't see a MK2 mentioned either??

It's a fun, easy to shoot pistol. I like mine a lot.
 
It's still called the FiveSeveN, but the new model is called the MK2. According to the wiki page it will be coming with fixed sights. I'm not sure what the changes are other than the slide having cocking serrations on the front.

"The Five-seven MK2 model was introduced in 2013, and is now featured on FN Herstal's official website. This new model has cocking serrations on the front of the slide as well as on the rear. It has been reported to have a one-piece metal slide (under the polymer cover), whereas the previous models have a two-piece welded metal slide. There is apparently still a choice of fixed or adjustable sights: the model shown on FNH's site is a fixed-sight version; a model with adjustable sights was photographed at the 2013 SHOT show. The rear sight on the adjustable-sight version has also been changed, with beefed-up construction and white straight-edge sight references compared to the present three-dot target-style sights; these have been described as "combat adjustable sights". The MK2 as shown has a black frame and slide, with flat black controls in place of the grey controls of the IOM and USG models. FNH is not currently stating on their site whether this model will be produced in any other colors."

its a wonderful pistol and I hope to pick one up again down the road...once this madness subsides. I "cashed out" of my 5.7 stuff because I didn't want to let them sit in a safe and ammo was in short supply beginning in October.

Expect to pay $2k for a NIB FiveSeven until the sillyness abates.
 
I had one with fixed sights. I never really liked adjustable sights. If you're going to do long distance shooting with the pistol, you might want them. Other than that, get the fixed sights.

It's a wonderful gun, if you've never owned one.

What about the sights? Night or white?
 
It's on my "to buy" list but I'll wait until the panic subsides and I can get one for a reasonable price. I sold my last FiveSeven and I miss it, they are fun pistols. Now that American Eagle is making plinking 5.7 ammo for a good price I want one even more!
 
nwilliams thanks for the heads-up on the American Eagle ammo (not to jack the thread). I wouldn't have known otherwise.
On topic, what is so special about the MK2 over the original? I certainly don't see the need for a special sub-designation.
 
Federal makes both the SS197 plinking ammo and the AE stuff; what's the price difference?

As for "Mk2"....that's a bit of a misnomer. There were previous versions of the FiveSeven before the current USG model.
 
This pistol needs adjustable sights. The potential range of the round dictates that in my mind. The only difference I see are the front serrations which II don't care for or use anyway.

Yeah, it's a darn good-looking gun. I wanna buy the new MK2 for the looks alone, functionality is just a plus. :p
 
Excellent choice!

IMO, one of the best handguns you could possibly buy! It has the punch of a carbine in a handgun package. After Aurora, it was my carry choice for a while. I love that at 30 feet I can dump 20 rounds rapidly and keep them all within 5 inches COM. Before the madness, $1,000 was a fair price. I would wait until you can get it in that ballpark. I also wouldn't worry about the sights, get what you can get and sights can always come later. ENJOY!
 
Bit worried about the front serrations though cluck. They seem kind of deep for the front, and I'd be worried about having it snag on a holster when someone needs to use it ASAP in a self-defence scenario.
 
I'd like to have one but probably never will because the prices on these things are outrageous and the cost of ammo was high even when ammo wasn't scarce.

They look like a ton of fun though and I can see the benefit of having such low recoil in combat gun with a huge capacity.

That is all well and good. However if that is the carbine that cluck is comparing the five seven to he is mistaken. The five seven pistol does not have the "punch" of even the PS90, do to velocity loss caused by a shorter barrel. So again I ask him, what carbine are you comparing it to when you make that statement.
 
I don't know what was meant by "punch", but a FiveSeven with Elite reloads has muzzle energy that's in the neighborhood of 9mm from a 16" barrel.

They list 480-500 ft/lb from the pistol barrel.
Ballistics by the inch has energy for a bunch of 9mm loads:

They range from 380 to 620 ft/lb depending on the load. I'd call that the same ball park. Granted, the FiveSeven is achieving those energies with very light bullets and very high speeds, so if one compares momentum rather then energy, the difference will be pretty wide.
 
I couldn't get behind this gun until I shot one, but after two mags it was on my wish list. The recoil almost nothing, and once you get used to the trigger, it's a solid shooter. I think the jury is still out on this round for self-defense, but I've seen some great arguments for it. I'll still with my .40 for now, but I plan on getting a fiveseven at some point
 
My point is simply to underscore that to say it is similar to a carbine is a pretty worthless statement. A carbine could be this:

If one wants to promote its "punch." It would be better off to use a more descriptive comparison or perhaps better still, some kind of objective measure.

Yup a ps90 is a carbine. The position of the breech relative to the stock is irrelevant it's a light short barreled rifle.
 
Go with "night sights" these are very useful in locating handgun with lights out.
 
OK, back on topic...

I did not originally care for the Five SeveN, but arthritis in my formerly stronger hand's wrist and thumb, and a bad shoulder on that same side, has me looking at smaller-bore/milder-recoiling cartridges with a different point of view. (Even switching "primary" hands is only a partial solution, as snappy recoil torques my support wrist, too, when using the modern support hand method to reduce muzzle flip.
