I have been looking for a CZ83 in .380 auto, I speceifically want one of those and not an 82 in 9x18. I have seen taht there are about three of them listed on Gunbroker, but they are all over priced for their condition (look like crap costs like gold) adn the people were rude when I tried to ask questions about the condition.

Is there any surplus wholesaler like CDNN, SOG, AIM, and so forth that has any right now?

I have one for sale here in Texas. I put night sights on it, so I want more money than average. By the time I ship it to you, the cost is probably going to be more than you want to pay. PM me if you are interested in talking a deal.

If worse comes to worst, find an inexpensive CZ-82 and get an aftermarket .380 barrel. A gunsmith can swap out the barrels for you for a reasonable price. (It generally takes a barrel press, but they can do it with tools on hand.)

The only significant difference between the CZ-82 and later CZ-83s (which come 9x18 and .380) is the barrel. The use the same magazine. (They make a CZ-83 in .32 a.c.p., as well, but there may be other differences in that model.)

On the other hand, the .380 is a bit wimpier round, and you only gain one extra round capacity. The 9x18 round -- and it's availble with a good general supply of Self- Defense loads -- is arguably a better round. You won't notice much difference in recoil.

I've had the 9x18 CZ-82 and a bunch of .380 pistols, and would -- for the money, spend my dollars on a Kahr CMP-9, a Kel-Tec PF9, or a Ruger LC9. About the same size and even more firepower -- with cheaper ammo. (None of it is cheap, nowadays.)

Although it's been discontinued by CZ, I bet your local dealer could still order one for you. I would guess there could be some yet in dealer stock.

Is it really just the barrel taht is different because if taht is the case I think getting a CZ82 and changing the barrel would be totally fine.

What about the extractor or breech face, aren't those different?

Apparently NO difference (or no significant difference). You could easily confirm this by contacting CZ-USA. (Email address and phone number on their website.)

I've seen a few CZ-82s imported as .380s, with only the barrels changed by the importer.

The rounds aren't THAT difference.

Why the interest in .380? What does it do better than 9x18 (9mm Makarov), which is comparable in costs and performs better? If I were to get a CZ-83, I think it would be the 9x18 version, which I'm sure can still be found in the pipeline, somewhere.

The reason I want 380 is for the greater availability and variety of ammo as well as to have ammo compatability with my fiance's 380 (so we ca share ammo, buy it in nulk together, and all that).

I just don't want yet another different caliber (9x18) to deal with.

budsgunshop.com had some yesterday but when I checked today they were already sold. Keep checking though.

Good luck, they're fantastic pistols. I got mine last year, and it wasn't easy to find. I have no idea why CZ dropped them, as they seem to be fairly popular. Honestly, I prefer it to the Beretta 84FS I had, and definitely like the 83 better than the Sig 232 or Walther PPK.

Wow you guys are awesome, I really appreciate the help.

In case I di decide to get a 9x18 and rebarrel it, any idea what barrels should cost or where to get them? I might consider installing a standard/surplus 380 barrel but am not sure I want to spend the money for a new or US made one.

if you haven't purchased yet, then I also recommend coles distributing. User name cdisales on gunbroker. I bought a $199 gun and am pleased with it. They have some up currently from 179-200+ that look in good shape.

I have an 83 with only two magazines run through that I will sell. Has box, papers etc. Contact me if interested.

For some reason you can't get a CZ 83 you might want to look very seriously into a Bersa Thunder 380, if you like the straight blow back design of the CZ83. They're a pretty nice little gun, with quite a loyal following. I had one and liked it, but it got caught up in a trade on a Marlin 336 30/30. If I ever see another one at a good price I'll probably buy it as I kind of miss that little gun.
I do like the CZ82 better though.

CZUSA will sell you a new barrel, Call them (don't email). I think you might one or two other small parts as well.

These are great pistols, and they are super easy to take down for normal cleaning. But think twice about any further disassembly, they can be a b**** to reassemble.

The prices reflect primal instinct of some gun buyers......OMG they stopped making it I MUST have one now. I know, it is difficult to understand. The same does not seem to occur when car model or shoe type is nixed.

Seems extremely more simple and affordable to get a great condition CZ82 (less than a similar stock CZ83), and just spend money on the available HP and FMJ ammo. It's a better caliber, and the money savings would supply many hundred rounds of ammo...

Stocking an extra caliber can't be THAT difficult...

Perhaps sell your wife's CZ83 and switch BOTH of your guns to the 82... the profit on the 83 vs. the 82 again would be worth a few hundred rounds of ammo...

I purchased one of my 83's through Bud's and the other through whittakerguns.com, the latter of whom was/is a large CZ distributor. Might give them a try. :)
