Is cap and ball a muzzleloader?

Just making an observation here. I know this was not the question, but one should consider that if a cap and ball revolver were to be legal in ones state, you would need to get really darn close, due to it's low killing power on an animal the size of a deer. I know that I didn't say that quite...

    Flintlock vs Percussion rifle

In my oponion, the safest bet, would be to buy a caplock, and learn on it. Then find someone with a flinter, and try his a few times. One of the problems with novices and flinters is what I always did. Squeeze trigger, PUFFF, I turn my head, and then bang. I would repeat out loud " don't look...

    Steel Target Stand

Looks good, great idea. I would suggest a cross piece at the bottom, to make it more sturdy.

In-Line Percussion Modern 50cal loading question?

celem: TC sells what they call "Cheap Shot Sabots" . They are 240 grain hollow point lead bullet with a sabot. You might try them, they are inexpensive, 8.00 for a pack of 20. They are tight but fit easier in my Knight rifles than others. They are suitable for hunting too if you like. They...

    Question on muzzle loader bore

Perhaps wads cut from egg cartons, soaked in parafin. Or ...... That's one of the great things about muzzleloading. All the different options.

Anyone else use the Lee Loader hand tool?

Haven't used mine in a while. I have one in 32-20, 22-250, and 20 ga. They are slick little gizmos. Not fast, but not all that slow either. And they don't cost several hundred bucks.

    In-Line 50cal

oh yeh, and also, it is my understanding that 150 grains is the max load, but not the accurate load. Most I've heard find accuracy best around 90 grains.

    In-Line 50cal

I think the break action guns are relying on the action being closed to hold the primer in place. I just got a pursuit, but haven't gotten as far as to shoot it yet. Took awhile of soaking and trying to get the breech plug out to clean and grease it. It just amazes me how few people clean their...

    Black Powder Subs-

This doesn't really answer your question, but, burn rate would influence preasure peaks. ie. FFF bp compared to FF bp. Just a thought.

New B/P shooter what will I need?????

you will run into some personal opinions, that very on what size ball to use. I have .454 and only a very small ring is shaved off. Not enough for the ring to be complete even. I have some .457 s I have been planning to try. You have to find a balance, the more lead shaved off the more of a flat...

Pyrodex pellets safe in flintlock ?

Wouldn't pellet loaded in a sidelock get stopped by the patent breech, or powder chamber, where as the bp kicker would fall inside the chamber? Causing an air space.

    patches for black powder rifles

I have bought patches specifically for each caliber, to make sure I have the right size, and it turns out the packages all have the same size round patch no matter what they are labled. That would be in .32, .45, .50, & .54 . So no need to be conserned there, just try some different thicknesses...

I have the Deerstalker in .54 percusion. I really like it, even though " I " can't always keep the hits inside a 6 inch paper plate at 50 yards across a rest. ( emphasis on " I " not the gun) lol.

    cleaning 50 cal

rajb123: First, note that there is a difference between Hoppes #9 and Hoppes #9 plus. 9 is for smokeless powder, and 9 plus is for black powder and the subs. The usuall is to submerge the breech end in a container of soapy water. Then work the cleaning jag with a patch on it up and down the...

Why I Do Not Use My Finger/Thumb To Seat The Cap

iceman: I know what you are talking about, when you mention powder burns. Just because the granuales are imbeded in one's hand does not stop them from continuing to burn. That is a deffinate major ouch.

Why I Do Not Use My Finger/Thumb To Seat The Cap

BDC: Keeping in mind that this is a discussion board. One should realise that in order for a discusion to be a discusion there should be verying opinions expressed. That does not mean that nobody apretiates your concern. There are many out there reading this thread without posting. They will...

    .50 vs .54

Chris: Availability is a viable concern. Yes everything is out there, (someplace). ie: internet, catalogs, online catalog stores. However all the stores and shops I have stopped at, and I do get out a ways on occassion. There is a Gander Mountain store 130 miles from me. They all say the same...

    loose caps on nipples

beag nut: these guys are not "pie in the skying" they are boots on the ground. They are saying what solved the same problem for them. Key word here is solved. The reason they are relaying thier experiences instead of telling you what to do, is they know there is no hard fast solution. Each gun...
