    Thoughts on Weatherby Vanguard?

Thanks for the information. As you noted, the Rem. 700 and Post 64 Win push feed actions use the same basic design. The earlier Ruger 77's too. Controlled round feed ( CRF )vs. push feed ( PF ) doesn't make much difference unless you have strong opinions one way or the other, far as...

    Thoughts on Weatherby Vanguard?

Also known as Smith and Wesson 1500, Howa 1500. Barreled action made by Howa in Japan, stock I'm not sure of where it's made. Often carried at Wal-Mart at discount. As far as I can remember, it's a Mauser 98 type action produced as a sporting rifle. Should come on the short action in 308...

    Advice for Buying AK-type rifle

If you can still find one, I got a 7.62x39 Saiga last week. It takes proprietary magazines limited to 10 rounds which can be modified to hold 15 rounds ( legality is kind of up in the air on that - though EAA was bringing in 30 rounders post AWB before they dropped the Saiga's like a hot potato...

    The Yarborough vs. The A.T.A.K

I've got an old leather handled Blackjack 1-5 copy of the Randall that's good enough for me. Gets as sharp as i can get it and stays that way for a long time. It's got some character to it. There's something about a hand forged knife that conveys the makers blood, sweat and ergonomic sense...

Roughest, toughest, durable rifle ever built?

It isn't military tested, but I've two Nylon 66's and a 50 caliber ammo can full of 22 lr ammo. I also have enough 7.62x39 ammo in the garage. Can't say what for, but I expect it would do for a fair amount of time. Look around for about $250 and you could get a Saiga and a few extra 10...

    HBWC Ammo: What for?

Seating them upside down makes for tremendous changes in pressure by seating them just fractions of an inch deeper. Also the original hydrashok was a 148 gr. ( IIRC ) inverted lead hollow based wadcutter with a small lead center rod - a W rather than a U shape.

Anyone dumping the WASR 10 Low Cap rifles?

I too had thought of grabbing the ones made for single stack mags if I came across them as a good price. But I just don't have the post Xmas moola to look very hard.

Hammer or frame mounted firing pin?

I'm with Standing Wolf. S&W first discontinued the recessed cylinders, then the pinned barrels, and finally the hammer mounted trigger in their sustained pursuit of mediocracy. :cuss:

Anybody know specifics about James Bond's PPK?

In the book his Beretta was taken away and "Q" suggested the Walther PPK in 7.65 as " ... a real stopping round. " "Q" then gave Bond the 5 shot S&W " Airweight Bodyguard " in 38 special ( later the Model 38 in Airweight and Model 49 in steel ) as an alternative choice. The auto was...

What gun has the features I need?

The CZ75B is slated for stainless sometime in '05. Go to the CZ Forum for estimated time of arrival.

    i want a .22 pistol

The Ruger Mk III has an integral lock in it. The Mk II doesn't. I would get the Mk II in a standard barrel as I will shoot from a rest, roll-over prone, whatever advantage I can take without having to pack an inch plus diameter all around. on my hip. On top of that, the Buckmark can be had...

Home defense - pump or semi-auto?

20 ga. A-5 with 18.5" barrel, cause it handles like an M1 carbine. ( And because I don't like getting beat up! Ain't buying another 458 no way no how! ) 12 ga. 1100 with 20" bbl., reamed for screw in choke, Choate extended mag; fore-end; and butt with pistol grip.

    Can't Get Into Safe-Action

I had an early 17L ( longslide ). Dry firing made that capgun type "sproiiing". Take that back. The early pot metal cap guns of my youth didn't have the "sproiiing" to them, it was the later plastic capguns that did. ( But then I still think guns should be made from blue steel and...

    What SAA clone for slipgun?

Thanks, Old Fuff: I'm aware of the problem. And I know that the new hammer spur should be shaped like the business end of an "awl". I've considered a gun with a double notched base pin safety if they still import them, or creating one specially to enable safe loading.

    ruger saftey locks?

Their "New Vaquero" single action frame has one in it's grip assembly, and you can probably assume the bigger Blackhawks will get them next. The 22 Mk111 and 345 have them. It's a matter of time, whether you and I want them or not. I won't buy a gun with an integtral lock. Haven't bought a...

    Older police .357 revolver

Clean it up, get some touch-up blue, some black dye for the leather, and put it to use. That gun is the equivalent of a brand new car that just got it's first scratch or dent, so now you can drive ( use ) it without worrying. Looks like honest holster and carry wear to me, and not that...

Is the Blued S&W 357 still available?

Don't look ( in the gun case at your local dealer's ) now but folks like me are slowly and quietly scarfing up nice S&W pre-sellout guns made in blue and walnut - and nice Colt's too ( it just doesn't feel right to have only a single digit of 38's stashed away just in case )... but nickeled...

    Smith & Wesson Brand Ammo?

S&W were the ones that came out with the Nyclad ammo. Had to recall some of it as the earlier nylon didn't maintain rifling marks.

    What SAA clone for slipgun?

I appreciate the thought, but I don't buy S&W's with internal locks; I consider rubber grips an abomination; and I won't buy a gun with an integral lock that can't be removed. Springfield's mainspring housing lock is one I can live with long enough to take it home and replace it. The new...
