00 buck for hunting

00 Buckshot is known as Sauposten in Germany and was good enough to bring down a big wild boar. I have seen 30/06 fail to drop a one year old 110 lb male after a heart shot. 00 at close range is actually not a bad choice for several reasons.

Found this when looking for "loopers (shot) use against lions" info on google.

Leopard and mountain lion are similarly sized.

I still would feel ok with buckshot, but then I use reason only selectively.

This from the conclusion...

In conclusion then, shotguns and lions are a first class recipe for a mauled hunter, whilst if the National Parks records are anything to go by, a shotgun and a wounded leopard are not always a good mix. Leave shotguns for the birds and stick to rifles for big game. That way you don't get hurt… however, always carry a handgun when following up wounded cats. Pistoling a peeved pussy on top of you is infinitely easier than trying to throttle it. (If you are a complete chicken like myself, fit a bayonet to your rifle. You can then keep kitty at a reasonable distance while drawing your revolver: -much better than giving it an arm to chew on.)

For interest...

My Special Forces unit tested a number of cartridge weapons to determine which would be the best for city fighting...SMGs, full and semi-auto rifles, pistols...and shotguns, using a range of pellet sizes. The winner: 12-ga shotgun with #1 buckshot. The 16 .30-cal pellet pattern was dense enough to take out a window or doorframe from across the street with a single shot. Larger sized buckshot didn't do as well...fewer pellets and less dense a pattern.

The moral: Run a test using your hunting shotgun and a variety of buckshot sizes to determine pattern density at different ranges, then make your informed decision. ;)
