I've done the change thing, but there are even better ways. Guns are much cheaper than hot rods, or any kind of performance car vs. appliance transportation, so don't spend money on competing hobbies. Or cell phone plans, satellite TV, etc. Think about it - a $49.99 cell phone plan is $600 a year. Buy a tracphone and spend the other $500 on a gun.
Most people blow their discretionary money with small payment, large ticket items that eat up their cash flow. Add it up - cut the toys out - and get hardware that isn't vaporware or services that expire daily. You don't have to have cable. I don't. Other than utilities, I get the paper and a sloooow DSL service. I have four kids, my wife doesn't work, I make less that 28k a year, my house and cars are paid for, it can be done.
Buying work clothes at retail? Get them from DAV, Goodwill, Salvation Army. You can wear better quality cheaper, and you don't have to worry about getting the first snag or stain. It's been done for you. If you're doing slacks and dress shirts - same thing. The racks are filled with Dockers. You will save hundreds.
Think and dedicate that wasted chip machine and pop money to a gun account. Use a mason jar under the bed, or an old wine bottle (works real good for bills, you can't get them out easy.) You just have to want it enough to make yourself do it.
It's called self discipline, same thing you exercise daily with CCW.
