I should be picking up my ar15 tomorrow. It's going to be a range toy for the most part, so no need for high-end optics at the moment.

If you had around $100 to spend on optics for the ar, what would you get.

Check out Primary Arms. They have lots of affordable optics; scopes, red dots, etc. I have bought lots of stuff from them. Great customer service, fast shipping and great prices.

Look for the Simmons White tail think it is 4.5 or 6-22x50. Look at the thread on THR about scope review. Can find them on sale for around $99 to $105. If you do not need the extra mag just leave it on 6x and it works great.

Vortex Strikefire for about $150 is the best thing out there for an inexpensive RDS, as far as I am aware. I have one on my .22lr upper and it is far sturdier and clearer than any sight has a right to be in that price range.

TRS-25, strikefire, Sparc, are all red dots and are great products; look at the cheap red dot thread here at THR but they are not scopes with magnification.

I would look for a good used Weaver, Leupold, or Redfield in a 1.5-7x variable. I have them mounted on a couple coyote AR's and they money. I don't think I have paid over $35 for any of the scopes but you will need rings and risers so the $100 will still be used up.

I really like the primary arms stuff. So does everyone else that uses them and doesn't try to act like an internet commando.

what kind of range toy? is it an indoor 25 yard range or an outdoor 700 yard range? if all you are looking at is 25 yards then midwayusa.com has a nice leapers red/green dot. the ability to change dot color comes in handy, the green is better for low light and paper shooting but red is better contrast against foliage. if you are thinking of longer range shooting then I cant think of anything I would recommend for under $100. for about $150 nikon prostaffs are good.

If it is lacking irons, I would buy those. $100 would get you great iron sights.

If it already has irons, buy $100 worth of ammo.

I am happy so far with my primary arms md06. Its about $80 and is comparable to an aimpoint. If you are going into combat to fight the taliban I'd suggest spending the extra $500 for a real aimpoint or eotech (for durability reasons, like being in a humvee that gets hit by an RPG and need your optic to stay on). But if you are going to assault the range and wage war on pigs, deer, or other combatants that can't kill you I'd go with the primary arms.

ETA: If you aren't going to be shooting at less than 50 yards and need a scope with magnification then you aren't going to want a red dot. Go with a nikon prostaff or something and some 1" rings.

What MM is the lens. I have a Primary Arms Micro Green Dot Reflex Sight and like it a lot. I am interested in th md06, but am curious what the lens size is. 25, 30, 35? Thanks, AC

I have to agree with those that say get irons if the weapon has nothing on it. If it already has irons I would save that $100 and pinch some pennies and keep saving and get an aimpoint pro if you are after a RDS. If you want a scope, Burris makes some offerings that are good for the money and not that expensive. Cheap optics are not worth wasting money on IMHO. I would put a primary arms dot on a .22 plinker but that is about it.

If you can't budge over $100, Primary Arms sounds like the best bet and they seem to have quality customer service.

That said, if you can bump the price a little, you can get a Vortex Strikefire for $150 or a Sightron Red dot for about the same. The Vortex is China made but Vortex has some of the best factory support. The Sightron is Japan made and again, Sightron is a very customer service friendly company. I went with the Sightron as I'm a little more comfortable with the Japan manufactured optics, regardless of the company behind them, and both Sightron and Vortex have a good history.

I think it's 25mm (came out to about an inch on my calipers). I was a little concerned it would be too small since it sits near the rear sight on the AK which is a ways forward, but it's been fine.

The Simmons White Tail Classic 6.5-20x50AO is 80ish right now from midway (after rebate). For the price i havent seen ANYTHING better The only downside is the scopes are very large and heavy. I will still be buying another one as soon as i can afford it, just to have around, or maybe to go on my .17 till it head out to a new home.

Yep the Simmoms if you get a good one to start out with will get the job done: especially for $80!
