This may sound like a dumb question but here goes.

Is the 10mm compared to the .40 the same as a .357 magnum comared to a .38 special?

If you get a 10mm revolver you can shoot .40 cal's right?

Just wondering after reading some 10mm threads.

While I don't have a 10mm revolver, I am 99.9% certain you can shoot the .40 S&W in 10x25mm revolvers. With the use of moonclips I don't believe there are any problems.
Actually, some people even shoot .40 S&W through their 10mm semi-autos with no major issues. Of course, this is bad for the extractor, so most people get a barrel chambered in .40 S&W for their 10 mil semi-autos if they want to shoot the .40 through it.

I'm probably wrong but, I believe that revolvers that chamber rounds designed for semi-auto pistols, use the case edge in the cylender to hold the round since they do not have a rim at the base of the cartridge. Except in revolvers that use moon clips to hold the cartridges.

I'm not a revolver guy so I could be wrong.

Sure 'Nuff!

In the model you're speaking of, the S&W 610, you can shot .40s or 10mms out of it with the use of moonclips. Or, if you want, just stick them in there, but have a pencil ready to pop them out after you've shot them.

The 610 is a very accurate gun, with it's 6 and a half inch barrel. Even in the four and five inch models, the gun performs very nicely. If you want a revolver that shoots a 10mm, you can't go wrong.

Then again, it all comes down to availibility. Good luck in finding one.

Yes, BUT!

ONLY in revolvers. As far as I know, all the currently existing 10mm revolvers work with moon clips/half moon clips. That means that the cartridge headspaces on the moonclips, not the case mouth. That also means that a shorter version of the 10mm (like the .40S&W) will work in a 10mm revolver using the same type of clips.

This does NOT mean that you can shoot .40S&W in ANY 10mm pistol. It's not such a good idea in autopistols and can lead to broken extractors.

Similar concept, but a smaller performance gap. While the .357 can be fully 2-1/2 times as powerful as the .38 special, the 10mm is a 70%-80% increase in energy over the .40 Short&Weak when comparing top loads for each. Reason being that the .357 holds a bit more powder than the .38 spl but operates at twice the pressure. The .40 S&W operates at very similar pressures to the 10mm, so powder capacity is where the increase lies.

The 10mm is ballistically all but identicle to top .357 loads. Blue dot loads for each with similar bullet weights are very close. The 10mm operates at slightly higher pressures than the .357, though.

Forgot about those... Yup, don't use .40 S&W in the Blackhawk 10mm revolvers.

Blackhawks were also made in 40 S&W and 38/40 Win.

I would love to have one with 10 mm and 40 S&W cylinders.

Had a buddy that sold a Ruger Buckeye in 10MM/ 38-40 new unfired at a gunshow for $250.:banghead:

I should of got that off of him before he sold it.

The 10 MM glock can fire .40 with a barrel swap, and YES, it is fair to compare the 40/10 to a .38/.357.

Grab a mod 20 or 29 Glock, you can't go wrong.
