Back in December I had been watching the 1849 Wells Fargo (Uberti) that was on sale for $233.00 & free shipping. When I saw that they were down to 3 left, I could not pass it up any longer.

I did not have high hopes for it to shoot great out of the box and I was not supprised. 2nd round, was a cap jam.I stopped right there.

I had success with the "penny" style cap rake that I put on my 1862 PP.

This time I used a real penny instead of the brass washer. I wasn't as afraid to take a grinding disk to one this time.

While test firing I kept getting some drag from the caps when the cylinder would rotate. So I took frame from my 1862 and put the barrel and cylinder on it. (BOTH have the same frames) Bam.. it shot perfect.

I took a small grinding stone and used the Dremmel to take some more off of the sheild.Wow with another big smile.
I forgot to mention. The nipples that came with it had to much taper and the #11 Remington caps were falling off. I took the TOW nipples off of the 1862 and put them on the 1849. THAT did the trick. Now I have a good shooter.
For me I use:
.330 round ball (I pour them myself using the 18 cavity mold but I only used the top cavities)
11 Grains Pyrodex
#11 Remington caps
Replaced the factory nipples with TOW 5.5.9mm part# PTC-PS.

Awhile back I took one of those 14 dollar loading tools and took the center stud out, used a small brass fitting to replace the original rod and this is what I used to load the 1849 Wells Fargo and the pocket Remington.

I have to thank J- Bar, for his original post.. that really helped reel me back in. I WAS REALLY dispointed with CAP JAMS... !!!

Life is good in Texas

I really like this one. It is sooo nice to not have to mess with cap jams and cap jams.

This one and the 1862 are my favorite.

The ammo is cheap to make so the biggest expense are the caps and powder.

My next venture is to dabble with making some of that.

Yall are probably sick of me by now.

But these Cap Rakes have made a world of difference.

I took the 1862 PP and the 1849 WF out this morning and shot 25 rounds each back to back. Not a single cap jam..

To be able to do this has rekindled my interest in Black Powder pistols.

2nd Update on the Cap Rake..

This morning I ran 20 rounds each through the Wells Fargo and the 1862 Pocket Police. NOT a single cap jam at all. This is a big deal for me.. It was sooo disappointing to have to be clearing caps from the action constantly. I can finally really enjoy these.

Please tell me more about this Cap Rake.

I have two of these I never shoot because of so much cap jamming.

midland man, "goons" puts a cap post on all open top cap guns unless the customer request me not to. It's "standard procedure" for the service. Pocket did good! J-Bar helped a lot of folks putting up that video. Good job J-Bar!!

Pocket, the end of those arbors should have an "adjustable wedge bearing" installed so that you can maintain "tension" on the wedge after you correct for the "short arbor " (which should be your next "upgrade" or "fix"! ). You can do it!!

Mike

45 Dragoon, I have the tools to do something like that,,where would I get that insert?

Ref.that penny style cap rack I can't thank everybody enough for the videos and information. I am really finally enjoying these.

Pocket, for most arbors it's a 1/4" X 28 set screw with the cutting nose ground flat and polished. But, I use a #10 X32 on pocket gun sized arbors. You need to drill a pilot hole first and then use the appropriate sized bit for the tap. It's best to find a rotary burr bit close to the same size as your "final" size bit and use that to continue the drilling into the wedge slot or you will break the drill bit when you hit the slot. Then you can slowly run the drill bit in to "clean up" the hole (you can even run the drill bit in reverse if you're afraid of breaking it).

There ya go.

Mike

Pocket, any further reporting on this would be appreciated, such as how things are holding up with continued use. These guns (in this case the Pocket Models) are too much fun to just throw in the towel. Gotta make them work. Thanks

So far so good. My 1862 PP and the little Wells Fargo get shot every weekend NOW!!!
At this point even if I had to re do it in 6 month to a year who cares. It is an easy fix and gives me some quality bonding time with them, instead of tossing them in the junk drawer.

PS.. and the cost of the parts for this fix/ upgrade is unbelievable......ONE PENNY and NO shipping fees...
