im looking for a 1911 in 9MM....the only one i can really find is the Springfield EMP...i like it but the price tag is heavy....i want to keep the size to Commander size and smaller....anyone got any suggestions thanks

Um, since the Colt Commander was originally designed for the 9, you might want to consider a Colt. Costs about the same as a Springfield.

If I was to buy a compact 9 though, it would be a CZ.

Still plenty of older Colt Commanders out there in 9mm. and Super .38 to be found. And while their prices have gone up as they are still sought after by collectors and shooters alike, you could still probably find one for less than what something like the SA EMP retails for.

You might want to consider a Browning HP. It's not a 1911, but similar in use and look and IMO a better choice for a 9mm.

If it must be a 1911, I would also look for a Commander.

STI, Kimber, Les Baer, Wilson Combat, Para Ordnance.

I recently bought the Les Baer PII in 9mm.

In 9mm I also own a Glock 34, Glock 17, BHP, CZ 75 and CZ P-01. The trigger on the Baer is better than the others. Accuracy of the CZ with a replacement Bar-Sto 5" barrel fitted by the factory is the best. The CZ P-01 is the easiest to carry. These all have high cap magazines, the Baer holds 9+1. The Para holds 18+1, but has a wide body grip.

What are you looking to do with the gun?

epic,

I have made this suggestion in the past if price is a consideration. Buy a Rock Island in .38 Super and install a 9mm barrel from Sarco.

You can still get a Rock Island for around $400.00. I suggest you get a new extractor from Caspian Arms ($22.00).

Rock Island with tax (est.) $450.00
Sarco Barrel with shipping $ 30.00
Caspian Extractor w/shipping $ 25.00

Grand Total $505.00

The sights will be those tiny G.I. sights and the trigger will probably be heavy and somewhat creepy, but you would have a 1911 in 9mm (and a .38 Super).

Otherwise, you're gonna drop close to 1K for 1911 in 9mm.

Man RIA really needs to make their "Tactical" in 9mm. Dropping ~1K on a pistol whose reason for existance is to shoot cheaper ammo makes no sense to me.

In the meantime I make do with my Star BM (~$170 used), not a real 1911 but close enough to scratch the itch.

RIA in .38 Super

I've been eyeing one of these at my favorite gun store, price is under $400 (don't remember exactly, maybe $379). It's in the used case, but looks "unused"... I've been hoping that someone would buy it, since it's making me itch! I couldn't justify the caliber, but now Schmeky says I can pick up a new barrel...

I agree completely. I have read Rock Island is supposed to offer a 1911/9mm the end of this year. Taurus shows one in their catalog, but actual production is at least a year away or longer.

Due to ammo costs, there is large hole in the market. A good 1911 in 9mm would be a runaway success, but no one offers one yet. $1,000.00 for a 1911 9mm is ridiculous.

The best bet IMHO for now, is to roll your own.

o ya glocks...to bad i already own two....i was thinking more of a new 1911...they dont make brand new colt commanders in 9mm only 45...and yes i just bought a brand new colt commander in 45 loved it so much i wanted a 1911 in 9mm but the EMP & Pro Carry II seems to be the only real option that fits what i want

have you looked at para, they have a single stack 9mm commander that msrp's for $920 but I think they can be had for 750 or so. I was waiting on one and stumbled on a kimber pro carry 9mm and jumped all over it. It is one fun 9mm to shoot

The EMP is worth every single dime.

Seriously.

Yep, seriously, they are fine little guns. Mine is great.

But posters have a point. There should be a budget priced 1911 9MM out there. It would definitely sell. I shoot more 9MM now. Heck, I bet everyone is with the price of ammo/reloading.

An RIA 9MM makes sense.

Does SA offer the GI or Mil Spec in 9MM?

I recently bought a Kimber Stainless Pro II in 9mm. It has been perfect out of the box for 700 rounds. It hits what I'm aiming at and recoil is negligible. I'm very happy with my purchase. I haven't tried hp ammo, but the fmj has worked flawlessly. I only bought it for a target gun, but I may carry it if I ever decide to get my ccl. BTW, it was $829 and the trigger is perfect, barely over 4lbs. Fit and finish is excellent.

Only if you go the higher end production route or custom. STI makes the Trojan which can be had for $900+. I paid about $700 for my Springfield Custom Loaded, $500 used for my old school GI/Milspec, and $600 used for my Ultra Compact. You don't have to spend any more money for a "good" gun than you would for a .45. Equivalent models are about the same price.

But since the OP was interested in commanders and smaller, definitely check out STI's website: stiguns.com. They came out with a few new 1911 compact models that will probably be good shooters. I got a LS9 from them that I can shoot better than my full size 9mm Springfield 1911s.

Maybe 15 years ago or so, they did. I was fortunate enough to find one a year and a half ago. Check gunbroker if you're seriously interested.

I don't get the reason for the hate on the 9mm 1911. A piece of paper or a steel target can't tell the difference between a 9mm or a .45, but my wallet and hands sure can!
