1911 build options?

so.. who makes good 80% blanks and slides?

also, i think i may know someone who can 3D print me that grip idea of mine once i finish the 3D model.. so i could add some kind of texturing to it as well like checkering and have a hard polymer version of it.. i can carve the grip out of wood but i dont have the tools for checking or anything like that so it would have to be smooth

i was shopping for more 38 super mags.. seems with a certain type of follower you can get 10 into a standard length mag.. so a 12 round would only barely stick out the bottom, nothing that couldnt be covered by a base pad.. they dont happen to offer +2 mag extensions for the 1911 like they do other pistols which seemingly replace the floor plate.. do they?

^No, not that I've ever seen. After reading through this I'm curious as to when you plan to start, how much material you have already, and if you've contacted the local ORACLE here named Old Fuff, Sam1911, or Bannockburn... those guys combine for about 200yrs worth of hand gunning wisdom. Not to be a wet blanket, but this seems a bit like a Rube Goldberg project. Best of luck, looking fwd to photos as the project progresses :)

rube goldberg project?.. so far the only custom thing i want to do for this is make a wrap wooden grip.. the rest of it so far is a standard 380 build.. albeit going commander size.. now that could be difficult as i cant seem to find commander size 80% frames and i really want to start from the 80%.. and im not sure how well a commander slide would fit a government frame or if a government frame could be modified to fit a commander slide

You're not?
That is fairly straightforward.
Option 1 is to cut the rails and recoil abutment to Commander length while you are doing the rest of the 80-100% machining.
Option 2, my FLG's preference, is to shorten a G.M. slide to Commander length and use a G.M. reverse recoil spring plug sticking out under the compensator to hold enough spring.
Option 3 is to just thin the head of the recoil spring guide and use a Commander slide on the G.M. receiver. That will recapture 1/3 or 1/2 the slide travel.
Option 4 is to make a recoil spring guide like a Detonics which has no head at all and gets you nearly all the slide travel without modifying either of the big parts.

You seem to be having trouble learning how to build your dream gun one question at a time on the internet. Study up.

hmm, i think i will just go with option 1 and use the slide i posted above.. with this for the 80% frame http://www.tacticalmachining.com/80-products/80-1911/tm-recon-80-1911-frame.html

so, TM recon frame finished from 80% and tweaked for a commander slide
probably a commander size 38 super flat top slide with wide rear serrations only from fusion
nowlin .356-.357" groove 38 super barrel, extended and threaded
extended mag release, slide release, and safety.. possibly ambidextrous
modified grip safety
3D printed polymer wrap grip for better feel and ergos, or a custom laminate
cerakote stealth gray, OD, or flat dark earth frame.. possibly some type of nitriding or tennifer on the slide
compensator that fits within the profile of the full size 1911 slide, so that government length holsters can still be used
eleveated sights to clear a future suppressor
and a a bunch of 10 round 38 super mags

i think that covers everything

For clarity, that would be a .75" long compensator.

yes, that thought had crossed my mind.. it would put the total length about .25" over government length which pretty much forces me to use an open bottom holster anyway..

i think im just going to have to go with a universal fit holster anyway.. one i can adjust to the handgun with some clearance for a light as well

4.25 inch commander + .75 inch comp would be the same length as a 5" Govt. model.

Have you considered trigger reach, when planning this custom backstrap? A 1911 is a slim gun but I built one with an arched mainspring housing, ed brown beavertail grip safety and a standard trigger, and even with the fact that I wear an extra large glove, the tip of my index finger is centered on the trigger. Its just about a perfect fit for me, I can't see adding anything to the back of the grip and being happy with the trigger reach, or the slide release for that matter.

yes, ive considered length of pull.. and i have generally large hands, so its not a problem for me
