I have a 5" barrel 1911 with low profile sights, and I was thinking that sometime in the future I may want a 6" model. I figured it would be cheaper to just buy a new slide & barrel assembly, rather than an entirely new "target gun". So my question is, would the long slide fit into the same frame as the standard 5"? I would just like to know if this will require an entirely new frame or not.

I think most long slides are built to fit on standard M1911 frames. Check out fushionfirearms.com for 6" slide and barrel kits.

They will fit a normal frame. However, the"drop in" kind may not be as accurate as the original. I have built several 6" guns on standard frames - the key is the barrel/slide fitting. A slide that is slightly oversize so it can be fitted to the frame is good too. I use Caspian slides but Fusion and others also make 6" slides and barrels. What are you looking for in the 6" gun - performance does not change much and its a heavier gun.

Best to start from scratch or use a dedicated frame. If you have the money I recall Bob Serva and company (Fusion) building a custom double upper/ single frame for a customer and it was breathtaking! I'm sure the price reflected that as well but if you have the means...

I was looking at fusion earlier, which inspired me to ask... I have had a hard time with fusion's CS, I called, and emailed about receiving a Shipment tracking number on a guide rod & spring, and I was never answered.
