1911 mags...

My brother passed away last Dec. and when going thru his things i found my dad's WWII 1911 mags and pouch, loaded them up and slipped them into my S&W Stainless. They worked perfectly all day long. Go figure!!

I found the follwers on the Chips would tip forward upon the feeding of the final round, causing a slight gouge on my aluminum feed ramp. That's why I went with Wilson.

Having tried just about every mag out there, including "Colt" (Colt does not make their own mags, they have at least five suppliers, just check the mag marks), Chip McCormick, Wilson, Pachmayer, Metalform, Kimber, Springfield Armory (don't make their own, but made to their spec), Sarco "price busters", US military (real and copies), etc., etc. My go to mags are Chip McCormick. Then (in no order) Pachmayer 7 rd mags, SA, Metalform, Colt. Even the Sarco "Price Buster" mags are pretty good, especially for the price. Sure they rust at a hard look (so does Kimber guns and mags), but they WORK! For how long? I don't know, but they work quite well right out of the box and I haven't killed one yet, but haven't ridden them hard like the others. I have heard of, but not experienced, the CMC "last round drop", so I can't say what causes it or how common it is. Kimber mags are at the bottom and are generally junk in my experience. Just go to any pistolsmith site and look at they recommend and DON'T recommend, Kimber is at the bottom there too.

Someone actually gave me a couple of them. He said they were junk! I use them at the range in all my 1911s. They work great!

I'm of the opinion if your gun is "fixed" by using a different brand of magazine you've just covered up, or worked around the real issue. If "premium" mags make you feel better buy all means buy them, but I've never seen the need.

Check the extractor tension, check for the proper bevel on the bottom and gap to the breech face, check that its not "clocking" from a poorly fit firing pin retainer, and that there are no machining issues with the breech face.

The 1911 is a controlled feed design, that means as long as the release point is before the bullet nose hits the bottom of the barrel, and the release is straight up enough instead of squirting forward like a watermelon seed, and the mag spring is strong enough to push the round up and under the extractor, darn near any mag design variation will work just fine.

Unless all your feed issues are with the last round, its darn hard for me to see how the follower has much to do with it as long as its not binding -- which is usually obvious from "bolt over base" feed failures or resistance when loading. Usually I see this when the mags are overdue for cleaning (needed much more often now that I've been shooting suppressed).

Cheap gun show "GI forgeries" have always worked well for me although the original springs usually have a shorter than normal life, and a few were just too soft to hold the proper release point and quickly discarded. I've enough mags to load 500 rounds and head to the plate rack and half a dozen favorite 1911 variations that see regular use. None have been mag sensitive once the issues mentioned above were addressed.

I Normally load 6 7-round "GI forgeries" and 1 8-round CMC or Mec-Gar/ACT to give 50 rounds in 1 quart freezer bag, 6-10 bags for a typical session.
