Patrolman Carruth and PFC David Ezernack were shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect during an SRT operation near Overton and Warshauer Streets. The suspect was wanted for ambushing an officer the previous day in which he fired several shots from an automatic weapon into the officer's patrol car. The suspect opened fire as the SRT officers attempted to arrest him, fatally wounding Patrolman Carruth and PFC Ezernack and wounding three other officers. The suspect was also killed in return gunfire.

Patrolman Carruth had been a member of the Alexandria Police Department for almost three years, and also served in the 239th Military Police Company, Louisiana National Guard. He is survived by his two young daughters, fiancée, parents and three sisters.

This happened in my home town. It was a cluster from the beginning... the BG was known to be armed with an AK47-type rifle, yet the local PD's version of a SWAT team went after him with HANDGUNS!!! The two who died were approaching a house where he was thought to be, and doing so without using cover... net result, two dead cops, and a very traumatized city and PD. God rest their souls - but their deaths were needlessly tragic.

Anyone know what they were being arrested for, or what their background was (the BGs, that is)?
