.22 ammo price question

If you are not buying now you will be sorry later on. Fact is the Democrats will pick up seats in the House and Senate in the 2014 elections and in 2016 Hillary will become thr President as there is not a single republican capable of wining in 2016. So its best to position yourself for such an event.

As far as 22lr goes I've noticed fewer offerings on gunbot.net recently. My local Academy had been getting some in on every delivery but has now gone cold. No 22lr has come in in neary 2 weeks. 9mm also seems harder to find now. Still good on 223/556 so far with everything from 20 round boxes to the 150 count boxes from AE to 420rd cans ,900rd cans and 1,000 count bulk now available. No .303 British though.

I'm afraid that current ammo prices are here to stay at these levels. Maybe a temporary 5% pullback in January of next year but as spring approachs a 10%-15% price increase will hit us so its my belief that its time to buy as much as one can afford before prices get higher. Any pullback in ammo prices is a time to add in more reserve as there are lean times ahead of us.

The above is my opinion. I can only hope I'm wong but I don' think so.

What makes you guys think that ammo will decrease in price and go back to the norm? If stores are selling it for $40 per 550 rounds of .22 LR and people are buying it all up, then why would they lower it back down to $20?

For the same reason Corvett's are not sold for more than their sticker price even tho most every model year is sold out, 2014 model year of Stingrays are already sold out. Prices will return to a normal level when the pipeline is full and the scalpers find they can no longer make a profit.

Not true, no scalping going on - prices have gone up and big stores like Walmart, Academy, etc. do not price according to market conditions, but to a certain margin. Currently lead shot ( I reload shotgun ammo) is running $60/bag, up from $48 a few months ago, which is up from $30 last year.....and that is from the bigger component outlets, so all things lead have gone up and with millions of more shooters, demand will keep prices higher as lead suppliers can't mine/smelt enough fast enough to meet worldwide demand

There is PLENTY of scalping going on. There is basically NO ammo shortage, just a massive abundance of greedy people. My local walmarts say they get something like 15,000 rounds of 22LR ammo in each week in bulk packs at 22-25 a box prices. But, they stock there shelves at a consistent time, and every week the same 15 guys show up and buy all 15,000 rounds. THese are the same guys selling the stuff in LGS or at gun shows for $40-$65 a box.

But, more an more people are finding better deals on line and in stores. Eventually, after no one is willing to buy for stupid prices anymore, the scalpers will have to start selling the 22 at prices that are closer to the real value. For now, they are just trying to keep the perception of a shortage going as long as possible to keep people buying at ridiculous prices, but it won't last.

Prices have gone up in big stores from 19-20 a box to 22-25 a box... NOT to $40 a box.

Not true, no scalping going on -
??????????????????????????????????

Well as long as people are using retail outlets for their primary supplier of ammo and other goods and reselling it at markups of 100% or more, without having a retail license to conduct a retail operation there is scalping going on, that is a fact.

I wouldn't pay that that for 22LR, even if I was spending your money.

$40 for 500 rounds is not the "new" normal. Keep in mind that all manufacturersretailers exist to make money. They do that by selling products. Free market will set the price. Prices will remain high only as long as people are willing to pay the price. When inventory turnover dips, so will the price.

It may not be the "new" normal but I would be happy to pay it. I'd be saving $10 a brick, but its still cheap entertainment even at $50 a brick.

Not when I can reload center fire pistol rounds for less than .02 cents a round and rifle rounds for less than .05 cents a round.

I think the new normal on 22 ammo will be about $20-25 for bulk packs. If you see ammunition at these prices, I would go ahead and buy if you need any. I hear of "normal" prices for bulk packs of about $30 the other day, but they sell quickly too at that price. So, my guess is that the new normal will be in the $0.06/round kind of price with a range of $0.05 to $0.10 per round.

Centerfire ammunition hasn't exactly been cheap lately either and it is consistantly higher than it was a year ago.

Pretty pessimistic view if your lean conservative in regard to politics Queen. I don't think it will turn out quite like that at all.

Come on people do your homework, there's plenty of cheap ammo to be had. I just ordered a bucket of 1400rd Remington for 59.99 thats 4 cents a round, granted it's backordered but it's locked in at that price. Hell Midway is accepting backorders for Armscor 22 which is very good ammo at 2.59 for a box of 50. Just using the tools that are out there like wikiarms and gunbot I haven't payed more than 6 cents a round in the last couple of months.

Just paid $2.29 today at GANDER (of all places) for a 50 round box - plenty on the display (although a 10 box limit)

If your Walmart has the same guys cleaning them out at the same time - then either get in line before them, or buy it elsewhere - it is easily available at prices below what they are charging.

It is NOT scalping or gouging if YOU WILLINGLY pay their asking price

When did you buy your components?....1960?

Nope!

Primers from a store going out of business, less than $40.00 for a brick of 5,000. Bought all they had, maybe 8/10 years ago.

Most of my powders, "not all tho" from http://www.gibrass.com/gunpowder.html
also within the same time period, cost less than $10.00 a lb., in 8 lb. jugs.

Bullets, I cast my own from free lead.

Say a 9mm, primer .007 cents, powder .005 cents, total .012 cents.

Simple, right?

Queen Of Thunder: Your forecast about the House and Senate could easily become true. But if This Week's momentum continues regarding nervous Dem. Reps in the House (all are up for re-election in 2014) and is well-founded, because of the "Afford." Health Care Act's financial assumptions, they could be a smaller minority in both the House and could lose control of the Senate.

But that depends on who bothers to go vote. Regardless of that, our "leader's";) credibility is on the line....and the Benghazi situation plus H's status as a member of the "leader's" team could endanger H's chances in 2016, despite Bill's large money machine.

98% of my extra gun cash is going only into centerfire ammo. .22LR has the very lowest priority because many of us have "bigger fish to fry".
The next major panic (induced by Congress' expoitation of a mass tragedy) could last much longer than the previous, and for many centerfire 'flavors', might never really cool off. This is delicate enough even without ATF Directors' guerrilla warfare against the 2nd Amend., compliance with UN Small Arms Treaty etc.

So a 500 round brick would be about $23 buying individual 50 round boxes times ten. Not bad for individually packaged boxes. While not what I was paying when I was 13 years old, not that bad.

While I haven't been affected by this entire mess I did notice my local Gander Mountain (Twinsburgh, Ohio) was among the first retailers to have ammunition and 22 LR back on the shelves.
