Got a question to any one on 22 long ammo. I own a 1973 winchester model 190 and a 2007 taurus model 63 . both rifles start out ok on this ammo then they both start jamming after about 20 rounds. the ammo ive got is remington 525 golden bullet brass plated hollow points. has any one had problems with this brand, with there 22 semi-auto rifles jamming or feeding correctly . I bought this ammo as a value pack.To me its CRAP!!! please tell me your preference of 22 brand ammo .

For the money, I like the Federal high velocity valuepaks. I shoot them in my Ruger MkII Gov't target and my Ruger 10/22. They work great for me. I've never had good luck with Rem or Win stuff.

The Remington bulk ammunition and other brands have more wax lube on the cases than compared to cleaner CCI Minimags and others brands which can cause problems. Also the .22 ammunition is rated at different velocities and this can effect semi auto blow back cycling. This is stated in my instruction manual for my SIG .22 Mosquito which states to use CCI Minimags which have velocities over 1160.

.22 ammunition that functions flawlessly in a bolt action can and will cause feeding failures in .22 blow back semi auto rifles or pistols. ;)

I'd suggest you get a 100 pack of CCI Mini Mags for evaluation. In my own experience they work on bolties, lever actions, and semi-autos, including one finicky target model, just fine. In fact, it is a rare day when I use anything else.

Once you've confirmed your experience is like mine, then simply stock up. You'll be set for a lifetime of reliable fun shooting.

Then go get a Marlin 39A. :)

I recently bought some Federal bulk ammo that is advertised for semi-auto target shooting and it works well in my handguns.

I also got a bulk-pack of CCI "Tactical AR" ammo that works very well in all my semi-autos (40 grain 1,200 fps) (dark blue box). Before I bought it, I first had to stop laughing about the "Tactical" name of what seems to be regular .22 HS copper-plated ammo! What's next; tactical BBs and air-soft pellets?

Guess I'll go out and shoot my "tactical" Marlin 39A. ;)

Rem golden bullets are junk IME. I get best accuracy from CCI subsonics, with CCI MiniMags a close second. They cost more than the bulk stuff but when you are pulling the trigger you will feel it was totally worth it versus fighting horrible accuracy and ejecting duds wondering if it's the gun, you, or the ammo that's causing awful groups.

personally I've had better luck with Thunderbolts, than GoldenBullets. At least they all make the same loudness of "bang". kinda dirty and gritty though.

My 10/22 will run the Goldens....when they fire.... but my 22/45 will jam on the feedramp at least 2 or 3 times in a couple mag loadings. Ive never heard anyone complain about mini-mags and Ive also had good luck with the Federal Bulk.

Our customers buy a "LOT" of the 22LR Winchester 333 HP bulk value packs (22LR333HP) and I haven't received any complaints...we cant hardly keep enough of it in stock.

Personally I shot the CCI mini-mag 36 grain or the CCI 40 grain standard velocity when I am doing any semi-serious shooting but when me and my boys go out plinking, we usually take a 500 round box of the Federal value pack and rarely have any misfires or feeding issues with the 10/22's.

CCI Mini Mag is probably the most reliable of the non-match ammo. Blazer is a very very very close second. Both are CCI. Remington is DEFINITELY the worst. I say this based on shooting this through dozens of revolvers, semi-auto pistols, and 22LR rifles (bolt and semi).

I was at the range this past Monday afternoon with my wife. She had the Remington bulk and I had the CCI Mini Mags. Yeah - she was pretty ticked that she was getting a dud every 50 rounds. She finally turned to me as asked "Why the hell did I buy the garbage?". I didn't have the guts to tell her that I was trying to get her to use 'em all up........

CCI Mini Mag is good ammo. It is reliable, but far from being the most economical. If you are just a 100 or 200 round at a time plicker, it isn't such a big deal. If you go out and put 500 to 1000 rounds down range at a time, it could be a big deal.

MANY people have had good luck with Federal bulk packs. If that doesn't quite get it for you, then the Federal Auto Match is what I'd consider to be a step up. I've also had pretty good luck with Winchester X-pert.

On an end note, Remington Golden Bullets are trash. I've had something around 1500 rounds of it sitting in my ammo locker for the last few years and it just sits there. I can't even give it away.

thanks for the replies! 22cal. ammo

hey thanks for the info ! on the 22 ammo. It looks like cci ammo is the way to go. I have not fired either rifle for awhile in the 22 cal. I know now to never buy that piece of ~#$#>% remington golden bullet ammo again.

No reason even a kid on a pittance cant shoot the good stuff. We are talking about 22LR for goodness sake. The top shelf stuff is still only $.07 per round.

IF I absolutely HAD to buy a bulk pack, it would be Federal. Otherwise I would shoot nothing but CCI MiniMags.

If you absolutely HAVE to burn through 1,000 rounds every time you go to shoot, then I don't see why you would even care about ammo quality. It's not like you're practicing any kind of marksmanship, you're just burning ammo for fun. That's not bad, and it has its place, but you have to call it for what it is.

For bulk packs, I like Blazer and Federal the best. Minimags are good too, but more expensive than the others. Also for a few bucks more, CCI SV is great stuff.
I have two .22s that LOVE the Remington Golden Bullets above all others, I buy them just for those. I really don't have any problems with it.

I didn't read a single plug for American Eagles from federal...Hi-velocity 38grn copper coated hollow points??? Been around forever?... In my opinion, they're a major contender in the "accuracy/ability to cycle" contest. The lack of WAX present on them is also a bonus for you and your extractor. Other than velocitors and Aguila's 60grn SSS I spend most of my money on AEs.

The last time (And it was The LAST time) I bought Rem Golden Bullet I had something like a 40% fail to fire rate- and found no priming compound or spotty missing priming compound. They are on my list of never again to buy products. Same with Thunderbolts.

I pretty much stick to the Federal 550-round packs from WalMart- 36-grain copper plated hollowpoint; they work in every gun I use them in. Also CCI Blazer 40-grain LRN in the 500-pack with matchbooks inside- that shoots well. I bought some Winchester Xpert HV 36 grain during the Obama scare and it worked, too.

I had not used Winchester Wildcat in probably 15 years and bought a few bricks during the 2009 scare - finally got around to using them...

Just came back from the range. Shot about a brick of 40 gr solid point through a couple of 10/22s and a 795. ZERO misfires!!!

Had a couple of Failure-to-Feeds toward the very end because the Marlin was getting filthy, but I was very impressed with the lack of misfires.

I have two cases of Wildcat squirreled away, and it's like night and day, compared with Remington bulk pack.

If price is the criteria, try American Eagle 38 grain HPs.
If money is no object, then high end Lapua or Eley.

I have found the Federal 36g HP 525 bulk ammo to be very reliable in most of my rimfire guns. It is great for plinking.

For target practice and accuracy I prefer to spend the extra money for CCI Mini-Mag 40g.

These two bullets have an added benefit in that they have the same POI in my guns. So I can sight in with CCI and then plink away with the cheaper Federal stuff.

ederal 36g HP 525 bulk ammo to be very reliable in most of my rimfire guns

+1 on this. Yesterday, I took my two sons and four .22's (cmmg AR upper, green mountan barreled 10/22, ruger MKIII pistol and NEF R92 revolver) to the range with two of the 525 value packs. Zero problems with all 1050 rounds. I like this ammo so much I buy it by the 10 box case.

Put a Remington Golden cartridge in the chamber.

Notice how hard it is to get it in there?

That may give more accuracy and more power in a bolt action single shot... but I don't think it is going to work well in a Benz chambered semi auto.

I can't get the Benz chamber to work that well with ANY ammo.

I found that Winchester Dynapoints (black box at Dick's) is the most accurate for my guns. Very dependable and consistent. As was said, find what works and stockpile. I always buy a box or two when I'm near the store and have a substantial supply. For the record, Remington is terrible, and you can't go wrong with CCI Minimags, although more expensive.
