22 LR Shot shells

Oh yeah. Since about 1987. Just never had trouble getting 22 shot shells until recently. And not just buying them from one of the above mentioned sites is one of my personal hangups. I just won’t go for the price gouging that’s so prevalent. And I feel that paying those kinds of prices (as much as my -06 rounds) goes too far against the grain for me. I reload shotgun shells and have plenty of hulls, wads, etc, that I will start shooting critters with those. I will probably try loading some 45 cases for the “1 round at a time “ challenges. Lots of good info in this thread, but I don’t have the tools/component's called for.
You don't really need any special tools to get a shot load worked up .
Gas check or thin plastic disc (cut from milk jug) as over powder wad , set on top of powder charge ... small bird shot ( I've cut open an old shotgun shell if you can't buy shot)
on top of the shot charge goes a gas check , fill the case to the top and leave just enough room for top gas check ... with the top edge of case roll crimped just enough to hold shot ... Or you can use another plastic card roll crimp and sealed top card edges with Elmers Glue .

The process doen't have to be as complicated as some folks want to make it out
Just do it the Easy Way ... check out the powder charges and details at Cast Boolits .
I've been loading gas check top and bottom wad shot (snake ) loads since the 1970"s , a 357 magnum case holds a nice charge ! And no special tools are required !

Thanks 35 Whelen ! One day I'm gonna figure out how to do that magic ...maybe

I recently bought a couple of 50-round boxes from a local grocery/sporting goods store that. He's tried to get more, but also can't find them. I have a few boxes and could part with one if you can't find any soon.

Does anyone know a source for 22shot shells. I’m down to my last round and I have been searching for months with zero luck. If 22’s aren’t available anymore, I’m more than willing to try a different caliber, or building my own if you have a suggestion.

hey OP do what this guy is saying! I do the same but with cardboard wads cut out of any old packaging like a primer sleeve or a box of crackers. I use a case I sharpened with an inside neck reamer to punch out the card wads. I’m using 5g of unique in a 41mag case topped with a card wad, then #8 shot(smallest I have on hand) all topped with another card and roll crimped on a standard seating/crimp die with the seating stem removed, to keep the over shot wad in place.
my next batch I’m going to just use a dab of elmers glue and see how that works vs roll crimp.

Loading your own shotshells is not complicated at all. I’ve been shooting a lot of field mice this summer while getting my new pastures under control.
I won’t ever spend another cent on 22lr shotshells. They don’t work nearly as well as homemade and as we all know, have become quite expensive per round.
Add to that I like the way the #8 shot kills them way faster in my experience than the #12 that is usually in the 22 shells

edit: that reminds me! Some fellas over on the cast boolits forum load walnut hull tumbler media instead of lead shot for use on carpenter bees around thier buildings!

Anyone ever seen them offer the ones used in semiautos (right) for sale as reloading components, just the empty capsules?

I have not.

Another thing that one might come across is capsules/ ammo for the Thompson Center HotShot rounds. These are not common anymore but are really just for single shot type actions. The shot capsules are scored to open like a wad, and are significantly longer than the Speer branded ones you can buy.

We have more than our share of Copperheads down at camp; doubt I'd survive a bite, so they get shot.
Used to carry .38Spl in a Smith 340 (and loaded those myself with Speer capsules), recently shifted to 9mm blue capsules, which will reliably run a P365. The red capsules, which have larger shot, give up some mass, and won't run in an autopistol.
Buddy killed two big Rattlesnakes with snakeshot in a .38; for really big snakes, think I prefer a shotgun.

Excellent post! You described exactly what I have been thinking about as a method of making my own. Thanks.

That “walnut shell” idea sounds really neat too.

Yes, “hot shots”. They even made choked barrels for them, 357, 44 and 45/.410 IIRC

Yup, i have a 44 hotshot barrel and choke. The choke isnt actually a choke. Its straight rifled to stop the capsule spinning and to score the capsule itself for proper shot release. Regular 44mag can be shot if the choke is removed.

Ive only ever seen 357 and 44 hotshots.

------------

Slightly off topic but you can find 22 LR rifles that are made specifically for 22 shotshells. I have a Remington 514 with such a barrel: it is smooth bore, and the last 10" or so of the barrel has a relatively huge bore for patterning the shot. It is called a Routledge Bore. It also has just a sight bead. Otherwise it is a pretty plain jane bolt action 22

Nice, never knew anyone that owned on of those. Does the special barrel do anything to make .22 shot rounds any better/more effective?

I havent actually tested that. But yes, it is supposed to keep the pattern tighter. They were designed for shooting those tiny 2" bluerock/clay pigeons in the 40s. It was call Mo-Skeet-O.

Here is a quip from another forum, supposedly taken from American Rifleman.

In US patent no. 2,185,523 granted to Routledge on Jan 2, 1940, this counterbored barrel section was claimed to control the pattern of a standard cal .22 long rifle shot cartridge (containing at least 120 #12 pellets) so that 85% of the pellets would strike within a 6" circle at 33 feet.
