Does anyone sell a “real” AR with a .22 LR upper?

My eight year loves shooting and I’d like to get her a .22 rifle. I’m not an AR guy (or even that into riffles), but between the collapsible stock and the easily swapped uppers an AR pattern seems like something that can grow with her.

I know a .22 AR look-a-like would probably be cheaper, but in the long run I’m sure 1 rifle with 2 uppers would be cheaper than 2 rifles. I also think it would be nice if her first rifle wasn’t something that just sits in the back of a safe until her own kids were old enough for a .22.

I know I could build one, and it might even be a good project to do together. But I have no experience building ARs and think it would be pretty fun to put in her Easter Basket.

Spike's Tactical, Model 1 Sales, and others sell dedicated .22lr uppers that you swap into the lower of your choice.

CMMG and Spike's (probably some others I'm not aware of) have in the past sold complete .22lr ARs that used a "standard" lower and thus a 5.56 upper could be swapped in. But I think the Umarex and other .22lr only AR style guns have put the squeeze on these by having significantly lower price.

You can buy any AR-15 lower assembly and add a dedicated .22LR upper to it to do what you want to do

Take a look at Palmetto State Armory website ,you can get a good idea to what's available and prices of what you want.

btw I have no connection to PSA other than being a satisfied customer.............

Bought an M&P 15 SPORT 619$ out the door same day bought M&P 15-22 401$ out the door.1020 bucks I got 2 complete guns, one in .223 and the other in.22 lr.

I have a DPMS m4 in .22LR, full size and weight, 1:16 barrel made for rimfire. It has been a flawless shooter with miscellaneous ammo that I have had around for 30/40 years and really cooks with mini mags. Also have a 15-22 you cannot go wrong with either a dedicated upper or a 15-22.

Tacticle Solution makes nice 22 uppers. Just buy a nice, complete AR lower and add the upper. When you are ready, add the 5.56 upper.

That's not necessarily true. Compare dedicated AR-22s with 22lr uppers. Remember to add the cost of magazines. You can spend $400-500 easily on either the upper or the dedicated AR-22 so think about the advantage of having two complete rifles, AR and AR-22, instead of one lower with two uppers.

Also you can play with the .22lr at Easter and add a real AR later, whenever you want.

Plus, I think the 15-22 is hard to beat for a .22 AR.

CMMG has/had (no sure if it is still available) the Quebec-A. I have one, it is their standard lower with their .22 upper. It is a very good combo. IIRC I paid $400-425 for it at a local gun store.

It's best to just assemble one. I did the same because I wanted a 'real' left-handed AR in .22LR. Bought a New Frontier lower (ay what you will about polymer but for .22LR it's a good match). A CMMG Revo LH .22LR upper (hard to find on their web site and it took a good time for them to build one). Put them together, added a nice sight and it was all done.
Trouble is, I'm running out of room in the safe, my CFO won't have be buying a second one so I'm likely to have to sell it to make room for other projects. But it shoots quite nicely.

And a better product, IMHO, than that Core-15 deal. Although the 15-22 doesn't use a standard lower, you have two complete guns.

I went with the "buy a .22 LR upper that works on a standard lower" route, and ended up building another lower for it.

Or you could get a .223 AR with a .22lr upper to go with it and if you decide later you want it to be two guns you can just get another lower.

Those S&W 15-22s are very hard to beat. I love mine.

Much rather have that and a good quality standard AR than that Core deal. Which I do.
