well i'm in Australia and i am looking to buy a second hand 22lr of some kind. I'm not sure of what kind to get or anything, i want it for just some fun shooting and hunting foxes rabbits ect, and I'm looking to scope it after i buy it. im looking to do it for under $500-600 if that is possible... what would you guys advise?

G'Day, Aussie Buddy

.22 LR depends as much on the cartridge as on the rifle. Is CCI ammo available to you? The CCI Velocitor 40 grain Hollow Point is without peer for hunting with a rimfire .22 LR. Lesser bullets offer lesser performance: Choice wisely. A 3-9x40mm scope should cover all hunting scenarios possible with a .22 LR rifle out to 100 yards. What do you plan to shoot? These are NOT Roo rounds by any stretch. cliffy

I'm not sure about the CCI ammo I've only got a 1 gun store near me and its not even a gun store, then i got a about an hours drive that's the biggest one in the state so ill have to go there and have a look. I'm looking on hunting foxes and rabbits, and a few flying animals. And how much should the gun itself cost and the scope?

It's difficult for us to advise as to cost. Prices are much higher in Australia then in America.

My recommendation would be to look at a BRNO or CZ.

CCI Ammo

Accept no less, and order from the Internet, since some American companies still manage to ship overseas. I realize shipping charges are becoming INSANELY expensive, as if we were world's apart. cliffy

How much do you they that ammo would cost per box?? like how much does it cost in the US?

Check in at Ruger

Ruger .22 LR Rifles are accurate, dependable, great values in today's crazy market. Of course, Burris makes a great scope at a fair market price. You get what you pay for, thus far, if only thus far, yet certainly not from Red China. Just my opinion, so don't come down on me too hard: gently is the politically correct term of correction now-a-days. Chastisement or otherwise harsh language is completely out unless you're writing an "OFFICIAL" NATO letter of disapproval to a Dictatorship out of control, or to me. I WARN you, I CRY easily, and especially if WMOBAMA actually became PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. But that's another issue, for another time. cliffy

Sorry, became askew with self-pity for a second

CCI Velocitors go for $4.67 for 50 rounds American hard-earned-dollars. Shipping to Australia would be horrendous, unless a local dealer would carry it in stock. That would make him or her the most popular store in Adelaide or wherever (QLD). cliffy

.22

I would take a serious look at the Savage MarkII-BV, Here in the states it would sell for around $300.00. A Burris or Leupold scope, 3-9x are the most popular.

swamp shooter is that brand new or second hand?? and for cliffy thats not too bad for ammo but itll be more expensive in Australia.

Hi arron12
Welcome to THR. My nichol's worth would be to see what the big boy an hour away has available, especially used in very good condition. Find one you feel will meet your needs and get it. Thoroughly clean and scrub the bore, probably the last time needed, many hardly ever clean their rimfire bores. Then purchase a few boxes of the less expensive .22 ammo that will do what you want and see which shoots best in your new gun. Then buy what you can afford of that brand and have fun. You will find that it will probably settle in and improve in accuracy with that brand as they get to know each other. Make sure you take the credit.:D Welcome to the great world of rimfire shooting. By the way I learned chatting with other Aussies that you have some very good rifles whose brands that we in the states have never heard. Again welcome.

Marlin Model 60

Shoots accurately, very reasonably priced. I've been very pleased with mine (I bought it used with a scope).

You can buy new for $120-140 in the US.

Get a Kimber 1911 in .22 . Even though that would probably be kinda expensive.

Id say a Ruger 10/22, just because I like having a gun that I can easily customize, and doesn't break the bank.

I would have to recommend either a Brno or a CZ from what it seems that Brno’s are more plentiful down under then they are around here. Check out rimfirecentral.com, it holds a wealth of information and there are quite a few Aussie’s on the board that may be able to help you with your search.

You can spend as much as you want or much less than that. I have a cz with a 3-9 scope and I have over 500 in it. I also have a Savage mark II F, the basic one, bought at walmart for $114, with a Simmons 4x .22mag scope. All for under $150. It shoots almost as well as the cz and very adequate for what you describe.

Choice depends on availability. If you are looking for a fun plinker and moderately accurate hunting 22 rifle, I'd focus on the Marlin Model 60 and Ruger 10/22. The Remington 597 is a good choice too and one to consider. Thompson Center makes a higher end 22 rifle which is known for it's out of the box accuracy on par with many bolt guns. Their weakness is that some have a jamming problem and that certainly reduces the fun aspect if you are plinking. 5 and 10-round magazines are available. The 5's work better in my experience.

As mentioned, in a bolt action 22, the CZ or Savage Mark II gets the nod for me. I have not gotten my Savage out of layaway just yet, but I expect good things from it after I scope it. The CZ's shoot real good for the most part.

If you find some of the old Mossberg 22 rifles, they will often amaze you on accuracy. If you find one cheap, I'd go that way. The current Plinkster model has not gotten good press.

Lots of good choices on scopes. I favor Weaver rimfire scopes (which compare well with Leupolds), but they run a bit more than some of the lower priced stuff. Just depends on your preferences.

Good luck on your choices.

I would say the marlin mod 60 is ubiquitous; get that, used , here in the u.s. for under 100 bucks, and go nuts. also, I would not overlook any bullets made by Aguila. they are eley made bullets, and they sell the absolute fastest 22lr cartridge that is not based on the stinger case. It is called the interceptor, and fires a 40 grain bullet at 1470 fps!!!! which for a standard case, that is
amazing!!!

Ohterwise, if they stock CCI, anything from cci is a good get.

Don't overlook the Marlin 39A or Browning BL-22 (used) in lever actions. The Henry's are cheaper and many like them.

IIRC, a good many of the options we in the US might favor are pretty much out of the question in Oz.

Semiauto designs like the Marlin M60, Ruger 10/22, etc., etc. may not even be allowed after the Tazmanian incident several years back.

Heck, I'm not even sure what manual-action repeaters are still legal there, much less how relatively common any of them might be or how much they'd cost.

Best I can tell you is to find a knowledgable firearms-owning person whose opinions you trust locally and ask them what's around. Better still, ask if they'll accompany you on the trek to the nearest dealer/shop and show you what to look for when evaluating a used firearm.

Virtually all RF's show a marked preference for a particular ammo brand or loading when it comes to delivering their very best accuracy.

Unfortunately, it's entirely particular to the individual weapon, and can't be predicted on the basis of make or model with much confidence.

Fortunately, it's tough to find any reasonably well made .22 RF rifle in good condition of relatively recent vintage that isn't capable of doing at least acceptably well with almost any good quality ammo.

Good luck on the Quest, and welcome to THR.

A 10/22 Ruger is a SEMI-AUTO: Verbotten in Australia

Bolt-actions are generally the most accurate actions available anyway. Don't get our new mate in trouble from the git-go by recommending a rapid-fire, illegal firearm. Savage .22 LRs are great at a low price. Ruger Bolt-Actions are pricey, but of the highest quality. Many European rimfires are of high-quality, as are their air-rifle offerings. My Diana .177 caliber 350 Magnum presses the subsonic limit of squirrel power with Beeman (German-made) 8.9 grain TARGET SPECIAL pellets. Twenty-one foot pounds of muzzle energy is nothing to sneeze at regarding ground squirrels and the like. Of course, a .22 LR's power is measured in a hundred plus ft/lbs of muzzle energy, whilst a .223Remington Centerfire produces upwards of fourteen hundred ft/lbs of muzzle energy, yet small game does not require such brute force to overcome it. American Tariffs raise the prices of exquisite Anschultz rifles. Australia many not encounter such world-market nonsense. cliffy

was looking at the local gun shop today, just had a quick glance a .22 with a scope dident really look at it to see what brand but it looked alright for 200$.. as for the CCI ammo it costs 10$ per box of 50 in aus.. as for king_ghidora that's one bloody strong fox!
