What's Your Deer Rifle?

I mostly use my Savage 99 "Brush Gun", chambered in .358 Win. A deer hit with a 200 grain SilverTip just doesn't travel far. This rifle wears a 1.5X5x scope. I also like my Ruger "International", chambered in .308 Win. A 2X7x scope goes on this rifle. As a "back-up" rifle or for use in bad weather or real heavy cover, I use an old (early fifties vintage) Remington 760, chambered in 30-06 Springfield. I have a Williams "Foolproof" receiver sight mounted on this rifle.

Just one gun? Yep, like a good share of this bunch, Remington 700 30-06, however, I have taken deer with that gun, a Savage 99 250-3000, 'nother Remmy 700 7mm mag., and the one I am most proud of Savage 1899 22 hi-power. Pondering carrying my new 22-250 this year. The Tikka is very light, and I figure one behind the ear will make 'em just as dead.

Either a Rem 7600 in .270, or a Rem 700 SPS in .243, or a Pre '64 Win Model 94 in .32 Win Spl., or on occasion a Mosin Nagant M44.

:confused:i use a 700 in 7 mm-08 but you know and new england arms handy rifle in 270 will get the job done, you will have about $250 in it....beleave you me they are very accurate rifles!HANDY RIFLE IS THE NEW SAVAGE!!!

For real world big game hunting I use specific calibers for specific applications: for doe mule deer & antelope I use a Rem. model 7 in 243 Win w 100grain Nosler partitions, for cow elk and buck mule deer I use a Tikka lite hunter in 270 Win with 150grain Nosler partitions and for bull elk or moose I shoot my Weatherby MKV in 300 Weatherby magnum w 200 grain Nosler partitions. In the past 30 years of hunting in the west I have used most of the calibers mentioned in this thread. I have found the 3 calibers I use now give me the most consistent kills on the size of game they are used for without being excessive in terms of recoil or meat damage.Hopefully that somewhat answers questions on guns & caliber choices.

BENELLIMONTE not trying to be rude but you could take all the game you listed with a 30-06....small deer 125gr ,medium game 160gr,large game 180grain

ohhhh no i didn't meen gid rid of them i'd never!if you allready own them keep them.but for a new hunter i don't think he/she needs all you listed...i guess what i'm saying if you don't have more money than jed clampet a 30-06 can take any game you will find in the USA

Cabelas here in MN is selling the Remington 798 (Mauser based bolt action beauty) for $499 in various popular calibers that are suitable for all that is deer. I think I'm getting one. My deer rifle now is a Browning BAR in 7mm Rem Mag.

Right now its a Remington 700 SPS in .30-06 with a 4.5-14x40mm Nikon Buckmaster's Scope. Just picked it up last week, haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but the entire setup only cost me about $831 or so ($484 for the rifle, $300 for the scope, and about $47 for the Leupold base and rings).

Regolith sounds sweet.....kinda makes my mouth water! i've bought and sold ALLOT of deer rifles over the years but the one i kept is the 7mm-08 its the only one i've ever felt comfortable with and i think that meens allot!so i think i'm done buying the newest and state of the art deer rifles.

Last season I used my 7600 in 30-06, but I have a winchester 70 in 30-06, remington 700 in 7mm rem mag, marlin 336 and winchester 94 in 30-30. The 30-30's are shot at the range mostly and not used for hunting much, but I do use them sometimes.

7mm-08 is a sweet cartridge. My father has a Ruger M77 chambered for that round, and my mother, brother, and sister have all taken mule deer with it (I used either the Sako Finnwolf in .308 Win or the other Ruger M77 my father had that was chambered in .280 Rem when I was hunting, mostly because I couldn't get my brother to let me use the 7mm-08 :p).

Only reason I didn't get my new gun in 7mm-08 or .308 was that this rifle is likely to be my only big game hunting rifle for several years, and I wanted something that has a great deal of versatility and a wide range and easy availability of factory loads (I don't reload yet), which the .30-06 has in spades.

Browning BAR .270 - First deer rifle, doesn't see much action anymore I just like bolt actions a little better
Browning BBR .30-06 Primary deer rifle
Browning BBR .257 Roberts just bought, but will definitely be going on a couple trips next season
Winchester Mod. 70 .300 H&H Primarily for bigger stuff but works on deer as well
Marlin 1896 Guide .45-70 Hog gun, but doubles as a brush gun for deer

My first deer rifle was a Remington 700 BDL in .270. Got it in 1987 for Christmas one year and it is still my favorite. Dad said I could get whatever I wanted (within reason). I looked and looked and looked, handled the Winchester M70's, featherweights, Rugers, .243's, .308's, 30-06's, 25-06's. The Remington in .270 just felt "right".
My second deer rifle was a Remington 700 ADL in .270. It's my second favorite. :D IMHO you just can't go wrong with a .270 or a Remington 700 for whitetail.

Mosin Nagat 91/30, M44 and occasionally when I went to do a buffalo, I brought out the Barrett Type 99 (both .416 and .50, although the .50 is a bit of overkill at 650grain....).
good luck

Well I killed a deer this year with my AR15 5.56 no scope. But this was before I got my Marlin 336 for Christmas.
So now my deer rifle is a Marlin 336W 30-30 no scope.

My main hunting rifle is a Remington model 700 in .270, had it since 1981, upgraded the stock about 3 years ago. It's done in close to 80 deer, lots of antelope and a moose since then.
