Heya folks. I got a question and I'm not sure where to post it. I was doing some reading on the People's Republick of California DOJ and something caught my eye. It talks about the definition of an assault weapon. And every clause about rifles all says center fire. So could I get a .22 LR and put a supressor, forward pistol grip, bayonet lug, etc etc etc onto the weapon or would it still be considered an assault weapon by the spirit of the law instead of the letter of the law?

If I could get a super tricked out rifle like that, do you guys know of who sells .22 rifles that LOOK like ARs, AKs, and the sort?

im not an expert on ar in cali laws, but as i understand it, you can get a off list lower and if its built up as a rimfire then its cool.

other will know better than i do. id assume they will chime in soon.

There was a gentleman at the indoor range I shoot at in Huntington Beach that had an AR with a 22 upper on it. He had the pistol grip and detachable magazine. Didn't think to ask him if it was legal now, but he was in his 60s so it could have been a pre-ban item.

If you find any info out on this, be sure to post it here as I'd love to know too. I live in the PROK as well.

heres a couple neat dress up kits they sell for 10/22s, both work with 10rd factory mags too

If you want a bullpup, please do not get the Muzzlelite bullpup shown in the picture. Instead, get the Dixie Consolidated bullpup kit, which is of far superior construction. The Muzzlelite is plastic, while the Dixie Consolidated one is solid aluminum...If I was going to build a 10/22 bullpup, that is what I would use...

The Evolution stock system is another good one, which allows the atachment of AR-15 stocks to it I believe- it too, is of high quality construction. Search for Dixie Consolidated and 10/22 Evolution Stock...My favorite dealer has one with an M4 style collapsible stock, a Bushnell holosight, foward grip, and flashlight. Way cool.

Rhineland Arms also makes an interesting 10/22 I believe, but I have heard they have a long waiting list...

The MG42 kit for the 10/22 is also mostly plastic, so I advise against it. I would get the DC or Evo stock sets, instead.

Suppressors are illegal in CA. It doesn't matter what firearm you want to put it on.

As far as the definition of an assault 'weapon' by CA law, various characteristics such as a flash hider, pistol grip, collapsible stock, bayonet lug, etc., only affect centerfire firearms. If the rifle you have is a rimfire (and can only accept rimfire), then flash hiders, pistol grips, thumbhole stocks, are allowed.

As far as a non-listed AR lower, you can't configure it with a dedicated .22LR upper receiver and use the pistol grip and detachable magazines. The reason being is that the lower receiver (the actual firearm) can still accept a centefire upper. Although, with the wording of the laws regarding detachable/fixed magazines, depending on how the 22LR magazine is designed, it may be legal if tools are required to retrofit the magwell to accept 22LR magazines.

Anyway, you should go to the calguns.net forum. There is a lot more information there that is specific for CA firearms owners. THR is a great forum, but everyone else in the 49 states won't be able to give you the best/appropriate advice as far as CA firearms laws go.

If I trick a Ruger 10/22 out and made sure I did it within the law, how much would I have to worry about police stopping and investigating the situation?
